  1. Manning also says ‘terrific’ a lot, but in the grand scheme of things, who really cares?

Here’s to a great 2024 for our reds!

And to whomever may read this, I’d like to wish you a happy new year!

Yep. Not sure what part of "His price is £25M" some don't understand.

I think a few people are starting to panic, because they're worried he'll start to lose value (contract length) or if he goes late in the window, we wont have time to add to the squad before 1st September.

I don't think the club will panic though. The price is set, pay it or don't darken our door.

His value could quite conceivably increase, if Scott plays well between the start of the season, and the January transfer window.

Clubs do love to panic buy in January!

  3. If Scotty is gonna be loaned back to us for the whole season, we get a guaranteed £20M, £5M in achievable add-ons, plus a 20% sell on. He’s gonna be gone, assuming he doesn’t mind playing for Bournemouth (or whichever team it ends up being).

Despite NP dislike of getting loan players in, I’m pretty sure NP would make an exception in this case.

Can we also not call Alex Scott a DM as in Defensive Midfielder.  He is not that at all.

He might be a DM as in deep midfielder.

I’d rather we just called him a “midfielder” because he can play many roles.

Putting Scott’s position in terms of midfield numbers, you’d have to say he’s either a number 8, or a number 10.

I personally see his best position is as a number 8.

  5. As much as I would have liked having JB back, I’m not too worried that he has decided to go elsewhere. There are plenty of other options, out there, that can be a backup / future replacement for Pring.

Strengthening at CB, DCM & and another GK to challenge MOL would be my priority signings. A bonus would possibly be us signing a target man type striker, and Scotty signs an extension to his current contract and stays for one more season (injuries permitting, I can only see his value going up).

I hear of a transfer from Scotland and all I can think of is Richard Foster, Marc Wilson, Stephen McManus and Andy Webster…. Absolute shite!

Naismith & Conway ain’t too bad. And don’t forget the soon to be arriving JB ?

The youngster is just that. Bryan is a lot more versatile than simply being an option at LB.

    We can do with both.

I’m not saying I’m against us signing JB, or wanting us to sell Cam Pring, but where would that put Bell & Mehmeti, if we signed JB and Currie, whilst keeping Pring?

    First world problems,.

I think Wilson’s future here doesn’t look too promising. Unless he pulls something out the bag in pre season…

Doesn't sound dissimilar to what was being said about Zak Vyner, during the last off season, and look what’s happened this season. So don’t write Wilson off just yet.

No goal from open play in 3.5 games now.

Scott has to bury that header. He's way too tepid in front of goal for a player of his ability.

Tight half, we def had the better opportunities.

I assume 3.5 games includes the match against Man City, so really it’s 2.5 league games. Which doesn’t seem quite as bad, does it.

  10. Now that Scott is playing next to James, the likelihood that he picks up a booking has certainly increased. Bringing on the promising, yet extremely inexperienced OTC, so we could move Scott back to the number 10 position, would be a huge gamble by NP.

With Williams likely to be out for a lengthy spell, we can’t really afford to loose Scott to suspension for the next 2 matches. From what NP said in the prematch presser, they don’t want to rush Naismith back to quickly, probably first match after the upcoming international break.

IMO the issue isn't training or anything like that, it's a lack of openness.  Rugby season starts next week and if you watch a game you will hear the ongoing discussion between TMO and ref.  They work together.

Once a referee has watched back a few of his decisions, he will become far more self-aware, a lot more so than if this is done privately.  At the same time, the more sane and reasonable of the football community will begin to have a lot more empathy for the referees and understanding of their decisions.  The likes of Wayne Barnes are regular contributors to coverage of rugby whilst still being an active referee.  Football treats refs like something that needs to be washed off their shoes.

That nonsensical 4 minutes to award an offside against Brighton would've lasted 30 seconds if the footballing equivalent of Wayne Barnes was allowed to be in charge.  " He's clearly in an offside position, and he remains active so it's offside".  That took 4 and a half minutes, most of which involved TV viewers seeing the same images over and over again whilst the VAR people tried to draw lines on the screen.  He was a yard offside FFS.

I would have a system whereby the ref's mike is off during the game until there is an intervention from VAR.  The whole conversation between ref & VAR person would then be broadcast.

@The Bard I do like that idea. Another idea I’ve heard discussed is having 3 VAR’s (possibly one being a former player) independent of each other. Majority rules, so if 2 out of the 3 decide the ref has made a clear mistake then that’s it, decision made, and the on pitch refs decision is overturned (with full disclosure given to the crowd, and viewers when the match is being broadcast).

Irrelevant. The on field match official is the final arbiter not some numpty sat in a room watching a monitor hundreds of miles away. Today's officials in the Premier league and throughout the EFL not only lack the courage of their own convictions but are worst in decades. Whoever is training and guiding today's referees is doing a p**s poor job.

@RoystonFoote'snephew The on pitch ref does ultimately make the final decision, but he can only do that based on what video images VAR are giving them to look at on the pitch-side monitor. On MOTD they said the key angle clearly showing Mitchell shoving Willock into the Guaita was not given to Salisbury (the ref) to review. Remember, initially he has given the goal.

Mason (the VAR) had somehow decided that the on pitch ref had made a clear and obvious  error, which was totally wrong. Also VAR had seen all the angles.

In this occasion I do feel for Salisbury. He has far less experience at EPL level than Mason, so once he was sent to the monitor and saw what he was given to see, there was always going to be a very high probability that he was going to reverse his originally correct decision, and disallow the goal. In most jobs, if someone experienced tells a less experienced member of staff they have made a mistake, it would be completely natural for the inexperienced person to listen. Wouldn’t you agree?

Tierney must have watched the replay 10-12 times before making a decision. Clear and obvious should be instant. Let them see it twice from two angles only and then make a call.

Sorry but putting a time limit, or watching a small amount of possible replays, will only make for more VAR errors.

One of the reasons they got the decision wrong in the Newcastle v Palace match was because the ref was not given the best angle of the incident to look at, on the pitch-side monitor, by VAR. Also the VAR was the more experienced of the two, so doubt the on field ref wanted to overrule him (based on the pictures he was given to look at).
