  1. After Tommie's death I heard his wife on the radio telling a story that when she visited a shop in Morocco, selling fezes, that when the proprietor realised she was English, and unbeknown to him, he asked why when English people tried on a fez they always flick their hands out and say " just like that ".
  2. I was versatile. From schooldays in the 50s I was a wing half, then when the 70s arrived and "sweepers" became the vogue I was ideally suited as I could "read a game", was only 5ft 7ins tall and had deceptive pace i.e. I looked a lot quicker than I actually was. Eventually moved to full back where my reading of the game had to be at it's best as the flying wingers somehow became faster and as I played into my 50s I have to admit I was no angel.
  3. After all their practice they still lost on penalties.
  4. Apologies and I bow to your superior knowledge on these matters. I meant teletext or BBC red button text as I think it is now renamed. The Gas have obviously improved as it's now only 3 clicks between the two of us if you scroll through the league's.
  5. When they were in Division 5 you had to scroll down 6 pages of Ceefax league table pages to find them after checking our position.
  6. "Freezer" got us out of our seats against Hartlepool. Then Roberts sent us wild.
  7. Sure it was from this Monday just gone and within 3/5 working days. Received my refund today.
  8. 1958/59 Sat Aug 23rd home v Rotherham won 6-1 Tues away v Barnsley won 7-4 Sat away v Sheffield Utd lost 4-0. 22 goals in first 3 games. Finished 10th Goals for 74 Against 70. 42 games 2 pts for a win.
  9. Really does my head in. Also, "like" when not making a comparative statement i.e. I was going to town like and......
  10. I have to admit that I worked on extending the then existing P.A. system in the Dolman Stand to the 500watt Whitely amplifier sited in the boot room on the side of the players tunnel. It also had a record player deck as an input. This was in the day when broadcast expert Dennis Langley was the announcer in the Hospital Broadcast shed at the back of the open end near the "Grandstand". Cue all the jokes but I can assure you the speakers could be heard in those days as we did extensive testing of audio levels particularly on match days with crowds in the Dolman Stand.
  11. Only been to one and that was unplanned. 1972 Leeds beat Arsenal 1-0. The day before met up in the Venture for a coach to London to support fellow Knowle Wester Malcolm Jones in the ABA finals. Great bit of luck as some lads were staying over for the Cup Final next day. As luck would have it someone couldn't make it so I grabbed the spare Cup Final ticket. We stayed in some dodgy digs in Shepherds Bush on the Friday night with my final ticket safely installed in my underpants whilst sleeping. Not a great game with Alan Clarke scoring a great header to win the game. At least I saw t
  12. First final I remember was 1953 Blackpool beat Bolton 4-3 the Stanley Mathews final. Didn't see it as we didn't have a telly. We had one for the 56 final though when Man City beat Brum 3-1 with Bert Trautmann, the City keeper, playing on with a broken neck after a collision. Only other matches on the telly then were some international matches on a Wednesday afternoon 3.00.pm kick off. As many have said Cup Final day was such a great exciting day for football fans never to be missed.
  13. Well someone's got to say it " honestly they get paid?". Now I don't use Twitter or bookface but the innaccuracies and mistakes on the club site news and reports are incredible.
  14. I'm in my 70s and I could still be a bloody nuisance on the pitch. I think we should be aspiring to field players with good all round talent as well as their specialised position qualities.
  15. Is this the same team that wrote the article on the main site "Holden targets strong finish" who have us playing Stoke again tomorrow!
  16. The club site has today's result as 3-1 to Boro!
  17. I had an instructor on my first coaching course in the mid 80s who had taken his qualifications in a class with Jack. He said Jack was quite inept when it came to the basic skills but once he was under the pressure of game play he became totally opposite and was the player we all knew.
  18. Yes, have never left a game so depressed.

  20. Prior to the opening game against Leeds I posted a link to a BBC Sport article on Leeds pre season trip to Australia and their gruelling training schedule whilst we had a jolly to Florida, and asked the question "are we prepared". Well, we all know what the answer to that was. So, it is also my opinion that our trainings schedules, whilst satisfying our own coach and maybe coaches, is nowhere near the intensity of the majority of other teams in the league. This coupled with tactical thought going into game plans and the apparent loss of interest by players to perform to the levels they ar
  21. And if you are in the sticks with no Freeview it was on Freesat 147.
  22. Me neither, but if you look at the top of the Football Chat index there is an item " Here is ths link to season ticket options" "by Phantom. I used this for my Option. I also emailed supporter services to advise that I did not receive the option email as I am concerned that I may not get the code as well. Good luck.
