I suspect that the ticket checking outside the ground is a token gesture to provide a visible security presence to discourage any would be terrorist from entering the crowded area. They could of course buy a ticket beforehand and it's easy to slip by without being checked. But there is a visible deterrent. Must work as it encouraged Red-Robbo to leave his belt at home.

Why was it necessary for me to show my ticket to enter the perimeter of the ground. Having queried it I was told that it was to identify "true supporters". To my knowledge this has never been asked for before. I assume that it is something that has arisen as a consequence of covid. I fail to see that this serves any useful purpose whatsoever and to my mind completely pointless as impossible to check everyone entering through non pinchpoint areas.
