I know lockdown has curtailed most of our regular activities, but oh what a humdrum life you must lead if that's the best fun you've had in "ages",

I'm not seeing bites, I'm seeing a lot of people convincingly arguing with you why the schadenfreude against Rovers is all part and parcel of being City fans.

Your point that "Rovers aren't our rivals any more" doesn't stand up. Just because they are in a different division than us, hatred for them doesn't wax and wane with their league position. When we were sweeping all before us in League One and they were losing to Bath in the FA Trophy and Braintree in the non-league we were as far apart as we've ever been and the "non-league" thread was absolute gold.

They'll always be our #1 enemy, and although t's unlikely things can change extremely quickly in terms of rival clubs' fortunes - I know it's going back a long way but in 1986 Oxford won the league cup while Swindon were in the Fourth Division. A few short years later Swindon overtook them. You never know what could happen unfortunately.

They've done a lot to justify our hatred for them too, from their 1982 escapades to trying to paint our fanbase as all hooligan devils incarnate, while they are complete saints. Just two examples off the top of my head. Just because they are crap at football doesn't mean they aren't objectionable.

When a Gashead accuses me of being obsessed with them, I am happy to own it. My response is along the lies of "Yep, guilty, I hate your putrid club." Doesn't mean I necessarily hate all individual Gasheads. A few of them I know, like and admire.

I suspect most City fans would disgaree with you. As Peter said, if you don't want to read anti-Gash stuff then avoid this thread. The whole point of it coming into being was so it could be concentrated into one place and not spread all over the forum. If your game is you think you are winding people up then crack on my friend but people replying to you does not = a successful fishing trip.

At the end of the day it’s just banter and if you can’t take it you shouldn’t give it and city fans of a certain age took it for years. Some of it occasionally gets a little childish but that’s on both sides like the whole bottle of champagne for Colin Daniel and then Windass being invited to their social in return but on the whole it’s good natured banter on both sides that fills a void during the international break

    If only...

well they been my rivals for 39 years and they always will be unless they go out of business. Nothing better than a Bristol derby to get the heart racing and the blood pumping.

Of course..but these fixtures just don't happen anymore, and if as many do, want them to fold, they never will. Suppose I can take the laid back view over them, because I moved from Bristol when I was 16, but never lost the passion for City, never will.

The rivalry at school was massive, but my sister married a gas head, and to be honest I used to go to Eastville with him and his mates, but never wanting a gas win. But he used to come with me to the Gate too, and those Wembley finals too, he always, he said wanted a City win.

Those days at Eastville, and AG were massive local derbies, and I am glad I have those memories, some fantastic players, Harold Jarman, Alfie Biggs, Big John, brilliant.

Anyway thanks for all the bites, best fun I have had for ages.

Me too. In 2011 I spoke to William Hill and asked them to give me odds for the Gas to stay up when they were in a similar position.

Managed to get 5/1 (admittedly I think Gas were actually bottom of the table and a point or two further adrift but still in touch of 5th from bottom).

    Best £100 I’ve ever lost ?

Ahh, then this thread isn’t for you.

    Off you pop, good lad.

Look, you got some easy likes and Lols from the easily impressed, well done, made your day did it? You are making as if Rovers are our rivals, my God how sad?

If only someone would put all the posts about the gas in one thread and name it in such a way that you could ignore it, whilst those who are interested can carry on unabated.

Unabated, unchallenged , thought processes, yep that is what it is, would have hoped we have moved on from the seventies, Trumpton, Hollowhead, Mem,  et. all, God sake move on, we have a fine club, don't waste energy on that lot, seems like we actually are in awe of them.

Our home form is diabolical, our away form clearly isn't diabolical under Pearson whereas the Few are just diabolical full stop. Those six teams at the bottom of League 1 would struggle to reach 10 points if you put them in the Championship and that's not an exaggeration (I accept we are talking different budgets entirely for most of those sides but the Fewers wage budget seems to at least be on a par with Wycombe and not hugely below Rotherham).

It's good, old fashioned rivalry and they aren't shy in dishing it out and when you add the complete delusion, lies and hypocrisy (a.k.a. #gaslogic) that gets spouted over there they deserve everything they get from us!!

There should come a time when some should stop obsessing over them, to keep banging on about them shows they get under your skin. They are not our rivals, they used to be but not anymore, his sort of tribal post code thing seems to prevent us moving forward.

I admit though to find it entertaining in their demise, but the other part of me thinks there a lot of other good Bristol folk who are completely down over this, and I could never laugh in their faces over that.

    Why?

    I'm loving it!

They are a pox on Bristol, along with the Kill the Bill protesters, but our own form is pretty much diabolical too, losing at home 6 on the trot, Brum, Rotherham etc, IF we were in a postion to mock, fair enough, but we are not.

Reading the BBC cricket site all the writers are up in arms about the wicket. Agnew bemoaning that showing live test cricket on free to air was poor viewing in a time when the cricket profile needs uplifting

Teams can deducted points for preparing a pitch that doesn’t last but the ICC are sitting on their hands..

I would provide a link but I can’t get it to work!

What amazes me is the lack of còment from the English camp, maybe because it's India and the volatile nature over there they are being quiet, however something needs to be done for the sake of Test Match cricket. Not everyone appreciates limited over cricket IPL, and now the ridiculous 100, 5 day tests will be a thing of the past unless we stamp out this cheating.

I agree but every test playing nations do something similar..

That said this pitch was virtually impossible to bat on, both Cook and Strauss said that but stayed short of actually accusing India of any wrongdoing.

Test match wickets should be prepared to off equal help to both the bowlers and the batsman and why they’re called Test matches and that was definitely not the case here.

Yes the idea is have a pitch that helps seamers, pace, initially, and then spin on about the third or fifth day, not the first session. That was never a test match pitch. Would have been better on coconut matting.

Absolutely right. Can test countries be awarded demerit point tho? Surely India will say that as the home team they produced wickets that suite their strengths

Yes I believe they can happened to SA 2019. The site of sweeping the crease area into a dustpan was shocking. They have a wonderful stadium and a farcical pitch, shameless by India, needs investigating.

The pitch was undeniably way way below whats acceptable, but that was pathetic from England.

Poor team selection - 3 seam bowlers + Stokes and only one recognised spinner, Archer batting at eight. How many England batsmen got out with straight on deliveries ? Bad batting and they capitulated. Bairstow should not be in at number 3, and i suspect he may not be playing Test Match cricket for too much longer - keep him for T20/One day. England should know now what pitches will be prepared for the rest of the series - the BCCI should be ashamed -  "Anything to win India" - its not like they need any advantage really is it?

Root a part time spinner, took five wickets. Truth is the pitch was a disgrace, should be officially called and and given demerit points. This was not a test pitch, the whole match lasted just four sessions.

    All wrong!!!

    It was Burton Albion!!!

Just found this in a POTTED HISTORY of BCFC:   https://www.bcfc.co.uk/fanzone/club-history/potted-history/

"1965: Division Three runners-up 1964/65, promoted to Division Two. The original set of floodlights erected in 1953 were sold to Burton Albion and a new set were officially switched on with a friendly against Wolverhampton Wanderers the same club which provided the opposition for the 1953 switch-on."

That is not strictly true though, the game against Wolves was not a friendly, It was a Division 2 league game that we lost 1-0. The crowd was 36,184.

I was there when the floodlights were commissioned, and I am pretty sure it was a friendly.

He didn’t find that figure, or if he did he found it off some fake news site or twitter and lapped it up like a gullible idiot because it agrees with his view/agenda.

I do agree that we need to slowly get back to normal if there’s no imminent vaccine or adequate testing, but can’t stand stupid people who create, believe and spread utter rubbish because of their ignorance.

The people who are pushing us to get back out there were also probably celebrating VE Day on Friday, getting teary over Colonel Tom and clapping for the NHS on Thursday, which in my mind makes them hypocritical because if they actually gave a shit about protecting the greatest generation or the NHS and other key workers they’d keep their mouths shut and follow the reasonable government advice, instead of selfishly wondering when they can get a McDonald’s, haircut, pint in a pub. By the way I do understand the economic repercussions of lockdown, I do also understand that if we leave lockdown too early because of idiot pressure then we’re more likely to end up back in and spending more time in lockdown.

I have elderly and vulnerable parents and my partner is a frontline nurse at Southmead, even if this weren’t the case I’m not stupid enough to think my needs are greater than the safety and the needs of those in those particular groups.

Your comments regarding the older generation is abysmal. Getting teary over Tom ...and blaming them for pushing to get back to normal is just plain wrong. I am not a  sentimentalist,  but in the case of Tom it was a fantastic show of genorisity and appreciation for someone who served his country, thankfully we are all not like you, and appreciate real heroes. You also deride those that clap! In appreciation of NHS staff, and this according to you is an older generation thing, news for you its not, kids are very much involved. And all this from someone who's partner is a NHS worker. Crazy and confusing.
