  1. I think this is probably right. Go back to the YouTube highlights when we signed him... all the goals were off the shoulder/ poacher style finishes. It's only since he's been here that he's been played as a hold up/ target man. Maybe you're right and we're just playing to his strengths more.
  2. I think the issue with changing which body part is counted, or having a wider “line”, won’t solve the issue. You’ll just have moved the issue back a few inches. you’ll have the same tech but now measuring someone’s foot rather than their armpit you’ve still got the measuring issue in there. anywhere where there is a boundary there will be a dispute re whether something is one side or the other.
  3. It’s all about the off the ball run from Fam isn’t it. Brownhill does well to spot the space and Hunt to make the pass
  4. Yes but by that logic, SL picks LJ so it’s his fault. Of course that’s where the buck ultimately stops, but at a more relevant level to today’s performance I think it’s fair to call out some of the players.
  5. So how do we fit them all in? Whilst also addressing our leaky defence. I see HNM and JB as more box-to-box than Ngy, who excels when he's sitting in front of defence breaking stuff up and spreading play. So how about the following? DB AW TM TK PP Nagy JD Brownhill Massengo AW FD I think that would give us tremendous fluidity up front, whilst still having width with the wingbacks. Plus Brownhill can drift wide. (I realize that this leaves out Eliasson - as I say, how do we fit them all in?!) Did England play this sort of 3-3-2-2 at the last World Cup?
  6. This is amazing. Just checked in to see what this thread was about, to discover that it's a debate about the status of CO'D's MOT. Peak OTIB. I love it!
  7. I think your two paragraphs are contradictory, aren't they? Hard to fit NE in if using wing backs; not as good when he starts. Rather than "for whatever reasons", wouldn't that be why LJ won't give him a run of games?
  8. You know it's LJ who assembled this squad, right?
  9. Isn’t the point though that we *haven’t* gambled? Strikers of the type you are wanting are £20m + at the moment. Splashing that kind of money out would be the gamble.
  10. Not sure I'm familiar with all of those players, but I'm sure we'd be drooling if we had them fit and playing
  11. Owen doesn’t state that it was wages. The offer he refers to (which Liverpool couldn’t match) could have been the transfer fee - ie, Real decided to sell him to Newcastle and he agreed.
  12. Yep that's probably right isn't it. Who else have we had a free transfer in that period?
  13. City Ben

    Massengo

Yep that’s right. I actually had the same thought as johnnymusicworks at the same kind of time. My idea was a little different though - what if Chelsea wanted to buy him but can’t because they can’t loan all their players out any more, under the new rules. If someone like Chelsea wants to continue to stockpile young talent, the changes to loan rules mean they need to find a new strategy. One such strategy might be encouraging their “feeder” teams to buy the player, with an option to buy him later if he does well. Again, all perfectly legal. Thats a slightly different theory to us simply buying him because they can’t due to the embargo. There is logic to the idea, but of course that doesn’t mean it’s happened!

    Massengo

Yes they could have. The embargo is on player registrations, rather than agreeing future transfers. So Chelsea could have agreed and paid for an option. It’s perfectly allowable under PL rules, however the option would have to have been registered with the PL... and no such option has been registered.
  15. I think you're right, and what age are they all? HNM 18, JB 23, KP 23, AN 24. Wowser!
  16. Genuine question - what is all this about us putting "all of our eggs in one basket"? Doesn't the fact that Afobe signed mere hours after the EN deal fell over demonstrate pretty clearly that we had back up plans?
  17. One small thing not captured in that highlight reel is the very first few seconds of the game. From our kick off the ball is laid back to (I think) Walsh, and a QPR guy starts to close him down. Massengo calmly steps in front of him - almost a mini body check - to block the attempted tackle. Super canny. Love it! Imagine that being your first moment for your new team, in a new country, playing men’s football as an 18 year old. The lad’s got balls.
  18. Purchased! This is gold, there goes my afternoon. Thanks for the recommendation Dave
  19. I actually wonder if Nagy is Pack’s replacement and HNM Korey’s. No space for sentiment.
  20. Interesting how much further up the pitch Pack was for Cardiff.
  21. I think we’ve simply progressed past having Pack as our main midfielder. We haven’t been able to buy anyone to improve on him until now; now our finances and (dare I say it) reputation/ standing mean that we can. So we have. “Simples.”
  22. I think the stat you’re looking for, @Robbored, is “packing”.
  23. I think what we’ve seen recently is a progression in the quality of players coming through the academy, but a much faster progression in the quality of our first team. That makes it less likely that graduates will make the step up, in the short term at least. Longer term the pathway we’ve demonstrated, combined with the higher quality first team, will improve the quality of academy entrants and therefore graduates. It will catch up. But that is a long term play and I don’t think we should be too worried about this intervening period.
  24. I was actually just referring to him being a bit of a fatty
  25. Tomlin. Could be a big player. Chortle.
