Apparently so.

Jamie Carragher wasn't arrested as far as I can tell after hurling a coin into the crowd at Highbury with some force.

Alan Smith lobbed a plastic bottle comparitively gently into the stand at Elland Road and yesterday he was arrested and bailed.

Go figure.

By the way, just to expand this thread a bit further, Nicky Butt has played for England three times this year while on police bail, including in the vital qualifier against Turkey last month. Why is it suddenly a big problem with Alan Smith?

Butt was arrested and bailed on Monday 2nd June 2003 on suspicion of assaulting a woman during a night out:

Charges against him were only dropped on 29th October of this year:

During that time he was not only selected for the squad but actually played for England in the following matches:

20th August 2003 England 3 Croatia 1 (Friendly)

6th September 2003 Macedonia 1 England 2 (ECQ)

11th October 2003 Turkey 0 England 0 (ECQ)

Mark Palios became FA Chief Executive in July.

Unless there's something I'm missing, this looks to me like hypocrisy and double standards of the highest order.
