What Makes A Good Manager

Amongst those who are arguably the top four managers in the world presently in a job - namely, Jose Mourinho, Sir Alex Ferguson, Guus Hiddink and Josep Guardiola - only the latter excelled as a player prior to management!

Assimilating a collective, preparing a blend and nurturing a vision is something far removed from just playing. The ability to man-manage, empathise, understand human nature (including greed and limitations) is just the start. They must carry authority and assuredness, deal with directors, fans and the media with equal aplomb but most of all need to be able to resolve, teach and coach. It is the biggest job description of any sport and none of these attributes are necessary for a football player.

Does Millen have any of these skills? Perhaps one or two but in my opinion nowhere near all of them. Maybe you do not need all of them but you probably need a fair sprinkling of these attributes to be successful. Some of them can be learnt and some are within your own DNA.

A whole host of players from Maradona to Keegan to Keane to *gulp* Osman have proved the sub-heading of this topic.

Man management, the ability to inspire, the flexibility and courage to tear up plans and try something new, tactical nouse, immaculate contacts and a certain ruthlessness in being able to drop 'favourites' make a good manager.

right now I'd settle for 2 of that list!

You can't be a players friend, you can have a laugh a joke but they have to realise you are there boss, that you will not stand for anything that Is against the morals & ethics of the club & individual. Guardiola in his first week gave out one almighty bollocking to abidal & then how many times has he had to do that again ?

If a Barcelona player turns up 1 minute late they are punished, they must be on the training ground with there shinpads on, laces tied before they start. Do you think our players are always in on time ? Hell no ! If something goes wrong on the pitch they no something will be happening on bench whether it is a sub or tactical changes they no they can turn to someone with superior intelleuct when it comes to reading a game ! Do our players ? No they see a cardboard cut out. I know were not barca but they are an amazing club to learn from.
