Crowd Trouble At The Gate

When you get to my age you just want a quiet afternoon at the match ... but as a youngster it was very different. What 'incidents' from yesteryear can you remember? My memory might be doing me a disservice ... but I recall Cardiff and City fans being 'kettled' in the pre-kettle days in is it Frayne Street? Over 100 detained according to the Evening Post. Then there was the time a tin of paint was thrown in the East End and loads of fans got glossed over ... was that Millwall? Then years back was the time you could change ends at half-time ... pre Dolman Stand. Think we were playing Newport County. Both sets of fans met behind the old wooden stand that pre-dated the Dolman and the City boys emerged at the open end with County's Welsh flag on fire. Memories ..

Swindon away, Reading away, Sags away, walsall away, Millwall home, the memories go on and on.

Going to football is crap these days, crap grounds, no standing, no fun.

I love to read on here about heavy handed stewarts at the gate, in my day they would have had one hell of a hiding.

Reading away in 84' was interesting...

Interesting? Never heard it called that before. 'Utter carnage' would be slightly more accurate if I remember it correctly! 'Absolutely crazy' would be another description I would use.

Was that really 28 years ago? Crikey!

Walsall in the play offs. That was my first real experience of carnage and also good 'fun' was Sheff Utd I think also in the play off when they had the A block of the Dolman. They all turned up in paper hats and had the mickey ripped in to them then it just kicked off with fans on the pitch during the game.

But I agree, now I just wanna few pints and watch the game with my little lad.

A lasting memory of 'trouble' for me was Chelsea FA Cup 1990. Mark Gavin banged home the final goal against a thoroughly drubbed Chelsea side.

I was 13 and stood at the front in the East End watching groups of our boys literally pouring from the EE along under the Dolman to the Park End for the trouble. Much to the annoyance of the Park End lads, Chelsea had been allocated the entire Park End that day and the Police were really having trouble stopping them ripping down the centre fencing which would have seen them spill further into the ground. Chelsea had bought a large firm with them, but they underestimated us and came under attack during and after from a large and very 'up for it' group of city boys. There were coins and bits of wood flying from the Dolman into the Park End all game, the old bill had no control. Then bits of Park End concrete was bring ripped up and thrown about, first at City fans leaving then back into the Park End in retaliation. This over-spilled into the surrounding areas and it really kicked off, with the Chelsea boys taking one hell of a beating!

The police lost control and there was utter carnage in the rain. The video on YouTube shows how packed the Park End was of Chelsea...

Call me a old boring git if you like, but I'm a little surprised at the fond memories being shared on here about violence at football matches.

I've been to grounds where its kicked off and I agree that it gets the adrenaline flowing and adds a huge edge to a game, but I'd never be involved in it or condone it in any way.

Football is too sanitised but its not violence that's missing today.

I can't see the difference between violence at football and in the street in general - someone completely innocent will always be on the receiving end, eventually.

i remember being chased across greville smyth park by load of those Chelsea fans. Got to about the flyover, and some city lads must have given some Chelsea lads a pasteing, they were looking a bit battle weary, as me an my mate got to the fly over, these guys saw what was happening and just charged in, never have i been so happy to see the CSF. I don't get involved in Hoolie stuff, but those lads came to me and my mates rescue that day, thoes Chelsea head hunters were looking to belt anything that moved!

More recent was when Ajax came to town in 2009, or whenever it was. I heard their escort got ambushed by some City?

Ajax escort got ambushed after a pre-season friendly where Ashton Gate gave a standing ovation to an opposition player?

Sounds ridiculous like most of these 'fond memories'.

If we want safe standing back in grounds then we need to leave this mentality in the 80s.

Thread like this before on otib, got locked and deleted so make the most of it whilst you can. One of the stories i remember hearing about was Aldershot away? That sounded mad!

 i have heard about that. anyone trying it on with a firm made up from the forces boys are very brave or very foolish. by no means massice, but god they would hand it out.

Never saw it, just heard about it from aquaintances down the pub.

It's true though.

It was edgy in town all day, they brought some very angry young men, who it turned out were banned in Holland but not here.

You're surely not suggesting football is "crap" because there's little violence, now? Does "no fun" mean not kicking and smashing the heads in of opposing fans???

Jeez, grow up. If you want violence, off you go to Afghanistan!
