History Of Bristol Nightlife (Merged)

I'm just having a bit of a Friday afternoon chat with colleagues reminiscing about how good Bristol used to be for a night out and I just thought I'd get your memories on how good Bristol was in the 90's/early 00's.

I remember watching the Wurzels in Mcluskies, going to Brannigans for my girlfriend at the times 18th birthday, countless nights in the Works (where half of the city youth team used to frequent), Sedan Chair, Henry J Beans, Henry Africa’s, Evolution, Blue Mountain, Club IQ etc.

Also, what was Joe Public's/Pam Pams called back in the day?

Such a shame that Bristol is so crap for a night out these days........or am I just getting old?!!! I'd rather hit a couple of bars and end up in the casino!

I started clubbing in 2000 there was so much music to choose from depending on what you liked I grew up on trance and caught the end of it in the clubs. But like has been said Lakota was banging there was nothing llike a 10-6 session on a Saturday night walking outside and it's already light your head hurting like it's been put through a washing machine you can't hear anything as your ears are ringing ahhh good times. It has steadily got worse and worse over the years the council really don't help when I was a bouncer there must of been 20-30 applications put in to open a club or bar which they turned on a monthy basis.

Funny enough was batting about this the othe week myself....and e same thing came up, are we to old?

I don't think so....town is shocking now. Clubs like Vanity....atrocious. To many Towie wannabes thinking they are millionaire play boys....when in fact they earn about £10k a year working some where like John Anthony.

Town is dead, so many bars have closed down over the last few years and nothing has replaced them. Shame for the chaps and chappesses in their late teens early 20s...

Glad i'm not the only one who feels this way, aside from Lloyds on the waterfront (enjoyed mainly because it WAS free and is cheap as it's a wetherspoons) i really don't think i particularly have a good time anywhere in town, and i think if i get anymore invitations to Dorma/Vanity adressed to my facebook i might go insane.

Bottom end of Park Street is dire but the exact opposite up the top! Woods is good, along with the Illusions place and a few solid boozers around Clifton village. Remember £1 a pint in Bar Excellence back in the day, was also one one of the few cheeky places in town you could get in being under 18 😮

Yeah I remember bar excellence... No ID needed! Again that venue is now empty, just how many licenced venues are currently vacant in town?

Dragon kiss, Henry j beans - Whiteladies.

Bsb, bar ex, 31 corn street? Sports bar, Chicago rock? Is panache still going?

Must be a few others??

Clifton triangle certainly seems to be the place to be these days, however I would rather spend a weekend with the in-laws than go to the likes of mbargo or lizard lounge etc. illusions not bad tho....

Odyssey with Patrick on the door checking everyone's shoes and randomly pulling people out of the queue for being "barred" so he could pretend he never forgot a face.

Ritzy's over 21s on a Saturday where there wasn't a single person in the place over 16 let alone 21.

Grab a granny night in the Mauretania on a Wednesday, all you can eat and drink for £15.

Those were they days...

Sports bar on corn street was ran by me and my mates for about 2 year from 2006-2008. I say ran, we all got banned from being pissed to sick to fighting. Sad day when that went. We had the pool room and a VIP area at the back with personally teles used to be mint with the boxing. Shut down cos of there ridiculous prices in the week and it still stands empty to this day. Such a shame as for my age group town hasnt been the same again apart from the random walkabout nights.

We wasnt dicks on for the row just pissed up south bristol lunatics who got out of hand hah. Towns not been the same again since, just bemi these days.

This is subject that often comes up in conversation between myself and mates.

As someone who started going into town on Friday/Saturday nights in 1998 I really miss McCluskys, Brannigans and even Chicagos. Odyssey used to do a good 80's night on some bank holiday Sundays and when it became 'The Works' they had a really good little club upstairs that was separate to the main club.

The thing with 'town' is, in your 20's you feel like you and your mates own it. In your 30's you stand around in clubs like Reflex, look at everyone else and think "when did all these little fu**ers take over the place?"

I remember this.

£15, all you could drink and then being able to get up at 7:30 the following morning to catch the bus to work.

I also remember Patrick at Odyssey and another bouncer there called Elvis who was also a doorman at the Superbowl/Arena One in Bower Ashton.

Is that bier Keller still going, that used to be a good crack, drinking out of 4 pint stiens!!

Greenhouse used to get packed, horn & trumpet used to be good as a pre club boozer. 31 corn street, steam rock was good.

I've only been in town a few times in the last few years and its definitely not as good as it used to be

Exactly my thoughts, used to go to Ramshackle every Friday and now can't stand the place as its full of little Drum and Bass rats

Patrick was a good lad, short for a bouncer, didn't resort to violence, and got respect for it. Could have some good banter with Patrick while in the queue.

Steam rock could be fun, I say fun, I can never remember much about it, every time I went it was a pound a pint :)

We must be about the same age. Don't forget the the light ship or the fight ship as it was better known. Sedan chair. Horn and trumpet college tavern studios

Horny crumpet, sedan chair, then brasserie Pierre, who wouldn't let you in, so you go up the side entrance, up the stairs, buy a pint, then wander back down stairs, much to the disgust of the bouncer who originally refused you access.

My Dad moved to Bristol in 1948 and was surprised to find pubs closed at10.00pm. When he commented on this met with "Who the hell wants to be out drinking after ten o'clock at night"?

By 1978 friends were amazed to find that the rest of the country had it's pubs open until 11.00pm on Fridays & Saturdays, but those in Bristol still closed at 10.30pm every night.

Back then the Cattle Market Tavern only had a six day licence and was shut every Sunday. They had an amazing juke box in there; it appeared to have last had it's records changed in 1963. Great if you wanted to hear Matt Monroe or Kathy Kirby.

My brother frequented The Granary in Welsh Back in the 60's as it specialised in Jazz and Blues music. When I went in the 70's it had become a haven or Rock instead.

Amazing that you mention the Cattle Market Tavern as that was the pub outside the Bristol Head Post Office as was - did you work for the Post Office? The Gas were outnumbered about 20:1 by City at Cattle Market Road when I worked there. The pub and the Bristol Cattle Market Road HPO are both derelict now - very sad. The Granary's long gone as well and turned into flats I believe. I had a dream that I saw the legendary heavy metal German group that is Rammstein playing at the Granary - the mind can play strange tricks on you but it would have been amazing to see a super heavy group like Rammstein perform at the Granary but, alas, Rammstein came along about 15 years too late to play there.
