Hope you like lanky ****s in baggy clothes, and the deafening squeak of size 12 trainers on laminate

Ha ha.

I love my basketball....the Flyers is a very good night out.  At least the Flyers made the play-offs, with 2 games to spare.

....and I thought @ZiderEyed was describing the Papillion’s dance floor.....

It didn’t close mate, it became Odyssey and The Works...but I also remember it as Baileys, R &Js and Top Rank...

It's not the one on Nelson Street is it? Think it's called SWX now.

In my heart it’ll always be Papillon... “Paps”. Wonder whether Patrick still runs the door???

Was chatting about the old days of Odyssey the other night to be told that Patrick is still working in Clifton Village! And who could forget Tiny on the door at the Steamrock on King St!?

The Steamrock was great, remember a massive punch up in there with a load of Westers and a rugby team from Shire/Avonmouth way.

Who remembers Rex up the Towns Talk ?

The Top Rank was my first night club, under 15’s on a Saturday morning dancing to all the glam rock nonsense, straight down the city ground from there

I suspect he’s too young to know Papillons.

Walked in there one daylight afternoon as a 20 year old with my boss at the time and sat next to Bobby Hutchinson, Rob Newman, Andy Llewellyn and maybe one other player... I can say it now because its nearly 30 years ago. Had a really good chat with all of them in between getting distracted!!... Is that the one round the back of Baldwin Street?

No, the one opposite where the police station used to be.  Odyssey, The Works.

Good to see this thread revived!

Far as town goes, well 29 this year. Older I get, more it's pubs only.

However, some good places in and around it IMO:

The Thekla

Mr Wolf- only discovered it last year with some mates, but not bad for sure.

Mother's Ruin- Again a relatively new discovery for me. Pretty sure it isn't a chain and it has live music at times- ticks 2 boxes for me that.

Greenhouse

High Brazil. OK, has some music- always preferred it as 'Start the Bus' personally.

The Apple- It's not nightlife as such, but a Cider pub on a boat- pretty unique, no!

Mardyke- Think it's called that? Around Jacob's Wells Road, good competitively priced cider (IIRC).

One place that doesn't quite fit category but has elements of a bar too.

On Park Street, 'All In One'. Only place open beyond 11, 11.30pm for a sit down meal I know.

Heading that way or a refuel on meal before hitting town proper- relatively quick, do things likes omelette, mousakka, steak- good variety.

Best bit? You can have a sit down meal until 1am, 2am something like that.

I don't think one more place I can remember the name of- they did German beer though. Did German beer, always thought was Bierkeller but maybe not.

Blimey, The All in One, that brings back some memories, feeding peas to the fish, going there every Sunday night after the pub and drinking a couple of bottles of Nuits St George, lasting it out until 2 am.  Their Stiffado was gurt lush after a few beers.... :)

Is the thekla still full of jitters, do jitters even still exist?

Mothers ruins the old bristol Bridge inn

Greenhouse was once the college tavern, best boozer in town.

One upon time when all the clubs shut at 0200 the all in one or the casino was where you went to drink some more

Interesting to know, how it all changes Bristol. Yet, the places still remain and fairly popular, just changed.

Jitters? Hard to know, what exactly does it mean? I know the term albeit not the definition, seems to have gone out of fashion as a word.

Decent food- being vegetarian, can't comment on the Stiffado  :P

However, they have an excellent multi-item Omelette for sure. Wonder if it was run by the same people then as now?

I worked for security leisure, which became Armstrong Security, for 5 years. I worked all over Bristol, waterfront, central, clubs, pubs, bars, local pubs, strip clubs etc.

I can tell you that the roughest venue i worked in was 'The Black Castle' Brislington. No backup. We had a 5 man team there on weekends and it was just a pub. We had to deal with alot of bad people there, we didnt go for punches, we crept up on them, restrained and then removed them and shut the gates. Going one on one for a punch up as a doorman is not the way to do it, you never know who you are toe to toe with. We took care of business by being nice and as a last resort we ripped them out of the venue. Getting into fights is a waste of time, get them out of the venue and shut the door is the way. Job done.

Haha, jitters! Stinking of jitter juice ?

I've just found this thread and what a thoroughly enjoyable read. Fond memories indeed.

I started clubbing in mid/late 80's. Moon Club, Def Con at the Thekla and some insane nights in the Malt and Hops with the whole place bouncing and sweat dripping from the ceiling. Saw Wild Bunch at the Granary when I was 15/16 and nearly got mugged of my Kickers tags!! ? Remember them?
