Willem II

Just recognised that I did not post a report of the away match against our local rival NAC Breda. Not that there was so much to write about. Lots of words and safety measures before the match, but a Sunday is not a nice day for a match as this. We went with 500 people to Breda, because we were not allowed to buy more tickets. NAC is in the relegation zone and played to get one point. Willem II didn't want to lose the match. So it wasn't an exciting game, still a few nervous moments with a 0-0 end result and a quiet journey back to Tilburg, since we felt we could have got three points in this match too...

Then the match of last Saturday against PSV Eindhoven. Nr. 1 in the Eredivisie. An away game with once again a sold out away box with 800 Willem II supporters. I still remember our last match two years ago. leading with 0-2 untill the 68th minute and then still losing with 3-2.... With that in mind we went to the a so quiet PSV stadium. Awful to see a stadium filled with 35.000 people sitting in it and waiting untill PSV wins the game. NO support of them, just sitting quietly. We were making far more noise with 800 as they did with 35,000.... The first half Willem II played quite good. Of course, PSV got some opportunities to score a goal, but you know that will happen against such a team. Our keeper safed us quite some times in the first half. Then we got a corner and we scored our first goal of this season from a corner!!!! Leading with 0-1. Willem II played very good the first half. Keeping the ball in posession for quite some time and creating a few opportunities. Half time 0-1 for Willem II.

Second half PSV started more aggresive and was putting pressure on Willem II. Therefore they got some more chances, but still didn't manage to score. Then in te 75th minute a penalty for PSV.... Would it happen again losing against PSV in the final phase of the match? PSV shot the penalty and ... missed!!! From that moment the believe in a victory was there in the away box.... Certainly PSV would not overcome this? Then 82nd minute a counter of Willem II shot on the post of the goal... no 0-2. Within one minute PSV got back and scored the 1-1 (ball was hit by a defender and therefore the keeper was surprised). Then you know it is getting difficult against a team as PSV and just a few minutes later the 2-1 was scored by PSV. Once again a lost match in the last phase of the match.......

Still proud of what we have shown but as the trainer said: lots of compliments, but once again no points...

We are now on place 12 in the Eredivisie and are playing tomorrow against nr. 13 FC Utrecht at home.

Here some footage of the 0-1 from the away box:

What a beautiful week it was for BCFC!!!! It was an important week for Willem II too, with a home game on Wednesday and a home game on Sunday.

First the match against FC Utrecht. We were nr. 11 they nr. 12 with a budget which is a few times bigger than that of Willem II... It was once again a match which we had seen more often. FC Utrecht not in their best shape at this time and Willem II getting lots of opportunities to score in the first half, but still 0-0 at half time when we should be 2/3-0 up... With our nr. 9 on loan missing for an open goal.... He didn't score the last 6 matches... Second half FC Utrecht played much better and it looked like they were winning the match. Our nr. 9 got substituted and his replacement managed to get a midfielder free at the 16 metres. He didn't doubt and after missing a very good chance in the first half, he scored the 1-0!!! Last 15 minutes nerve wrecking, but thanks to our good keeper with some good saves we managed to get a 1-0 win!!!! After this match we were still on the same position in the Eredivisie, but the gap to the relegation zone is getting bigger and bigger.

Then the Sunday home match against Heracles Almelo, nr. 16 in the Eredivisie and thus in the relegation zone. Their last match they played quite good, so how would we play against them. This time everything went smoothly and we managed to get results on the pitch. Leading with 2-0 at half time with our nr. 9 Arementeros scoring too. Second half Heracles tried to come back, but couldn't do much. Willem II managed to score another goal (in fact it was an own goal of Heracles) with an endresult of 3-0 for Willem II.

With this win Willem II is not nr. 9 in the Eredivisie and (some) people are looking for position nr. 7 which gives right to European football... At least now we can be (almost) sure that we will not relegate this season with a 13 points gap to the relegation zone with 12 matches to play. The gap to european football is 4 points, but with 4 difficult matches in sight, lets keep that thought still behind and have a look after those 4 matches...

This Saturday away match against Vitesse (Chelsea 2, since they have a lot of players from Chelsea on a loan) who are nr. 8 in the Eredivisie, one point in front of us. It is getting more and more interesting...

and Kachina, if you are reading this: eat your hart out!!!!! Where are your comments on Willem II now? We are staying in!!!

I was home sick from work at the start of the week and saw the Eredivisie highlights show on Sky Sports featuring the Heracles game. Good 3-0 win, looked like you dominated them

Fingers crossed that this season ends in success for both Willem II and Bristol City!

Last Saturday we had an away match against Vitesse, so called Chelsea 2. It was carnaval, and for that reason just over 100 supporters went to Arnhem. I can be brief about this match. It looked like Willem II was already with their head with carnaval. There was no real fighting spirit and Vitesse was far better than Willem II. Half time result 2-0 and in the second half Vitesse only defended the 2-0 and Willem II was not able to create any real opportunities. Endresult 2-0. Lost match and probably no Europa League next year, but who cares? At the beginning of this season our goal was not to relegate and this will probably not happen!!! We are now on place 10 of the Eredivisie (consisting of 18 teams).

This Sunday a home game against Ajax. Away we lost with 5-0, so that does not predict a real good result, but you never know. 1 point would feel like a victory! And as Phantom stated: you can follow the match too. Pitty you can only watch our matches against the "big" opponents, although the match against PSV was quite spectacular.

I believe the clubs have the obligation to grant 5% of the stadium to away supporters, with a minimum of 400. There are very many security/safety measures around away boxes. It looks like a jail, to be honest. For that reason the away boxes are most of the time not build in such a way that the away box can host a flexible number of away supporters.

Since most of the clubs in The Netherlands can't fill the away boxes (also due to all the strict travelling conditions all clubs have in The Netherlands), the clubs keep the awaybox as small as possible in order to sell the other tickets to supporters of their own club to generate as much money on tickets as possible.

On average we take 425 people to away games and with that number we are number 5 of 18 in the eredivisie...

I hope this explains a bit the low number of available tickets in away boxes.

Cheers mate. I presume that must be a bit frustrating at times?

Here some footage of the away box of NAC (which is the worst in The Netherlands). The movie is made by ADO Den Haag supporters. Busses and cars obliged to park in a sealed of area at the stadium with big fences around it. One turnstile for all the supporters to go through. In the away boxitself a glass wall of 8 metres high. Above that nets to prevent that things are thrown. In the glass walls is a big metal contstruction which ensures that you have limited view to the pitch itself... Due to all the glass, sounds from the field or the rest of the stadium is not getting into the away box properly and is not going out either...

We call this away box the fish tank...

Viewing this shows why away boxes in The Netherlands are not flexible.

Just wondering are any Willem lads coming over to Wembley.

Yes.

A few Bristol City fans attended last weekend, more will be attending matches over there before the end of the season.

In reply to people who thought Willem II are lower league duffers who would not be up to Bristol City paying in a friendly .. Willem II 1 Ajax 1.

Then just a few moments before the end of the official 90 minutes our nr. 9 Armenteros was free before the goal with the opportunity to score the winning 2-1. Unfortunately he missed and thus the end result was 1-1. Before the match we were very happy with this result but due to the failed attempt to score just before the final whistle we still had the feeling we could have won.

Have to agree this miss was an absolute shocker !

But like you say if you were offered the draw before the game you would have been happy with that
