22A
Branching out from county cricket, South Africa completely outplayed Sri Lanka to win a series 5-0 and India had to work hard to beat England. India are now playing a test series against Bangladesh. The two teams may be geographic neighbours, but their standard of play is miles apart. India declared at over 600/6 on day 2 whilst the Bengalis finished on 41/1. Are the established Test playing nations drifting into two tiers?

22A
India had scored nearly 700/6 in their innings. End of day 3 and the Bengalis have lost six wickets, but still have less than half India's runs.

To be fair to Sri Lanka they are very much in transition at the moment with a lot of world class players all retiring at the same time. If they have a new crop coming through they should be OK I think. I hope it doesn`t end up as two tiers though as we`d probably never end up playing the likes of the West Indies again and where would it leave a side like New Zealand? When they`re good they`re a joy to watch but when they`re bad.....!
Lrrr
So the Lions select 31 year old Ollie Rayner over 25 year old Jack Leach.... good to develop the future England players and all that....
22A
Day 3 of the 1st test India v Australia. The Indian batting collapsed in their 1stinnings and now they need 441 to win. Currently India are 45/3. Are the Aussies brilliant or have India imploded since playing England only a few months ago?

Super
Bit of a struggle for Jack Leach on the Lions tour. Strange that he only bowled 18 overs whilst Rayner bowled 48? injured? Edited February 27, 2017 by Super

Yeah but was just responding to why he didn't bowl more in the first innings compared to Rayner.

He certainly was expensive in the first innings, in both spells. i just hope it wasn't because he was subconsciously thinking about his 'suspect' action rather than just bowling naturally as he did last season. Could have just been a one off, looks like Rayner was bowling well so they may have targeted Leach, sometimes you just have those days. 22A
NZ lost inside three days to SA this morning. India v Aus appears to be heading for a draw. Aus 451, India 360/6 at the end of day three. The Afghans beat the Irish by 34 runs in a one day international. In a few years time, will we possibly see Afghanistan invited to replace Zimbabwe as a Test nation? 22A
Two items on SSN today. 1; England is the only nation which still attracts large attendances to Test Matches. Everywhere else spectators prefer the shorter versions of the game. 2. Australia's authorities announced pay rises today. Their women's team are receiving a £49,000 increase bringing the average salary to £111,000. Their male counterparts will now be on an average of £half a million pa. I had no idea they would get paid anywhere near as much as that.

Surely Australia still get decent crowds ? Certainly bigger than ours for the Ashes tour
Lrrr
Think its a case we still draw large crowds for nearly every team who tours, Aus for example may only draw in crowds for the big teams.
Northern Red
Australian fans only turn up when they're winning as well. If you recall when England won down there a few years ago, by days 3 and 4 of the tests where England were in total control, the vast majority of the crowd was English.
22A
One of the stands at Headingley needs replacing. Leeds City Council was going to donate £4 million, but cannot now afford to do so. If the money cannot be found elsewhere, Headingley will not be able to host any games in the 2019 world cup.
22A
Announced on SSN today. A meeting of Lords is trying to rearrange the T20 competition for the 2020 season. The plan is for eight regional teams rather than 18 counties. The counties aren't too happy with this and a change in the constitution will be required if the 18 aren't all included. 22A
OK, update on today's meeting. Eight teams each with a squad of fifteen players. There will be 36 games spread over 38 days. The ECB will meet tomorrow and at least 31 of the 41 members must agree to changing the constitution as it will then cease being 18 Counties. Hmm 18 counties into 8 regional teams means most will be a merger of two counties, but some will be a threesome. Presumably "ours" will be Somerset, Glos and possibly Glam. On the other hand I can't see Lancs or Yorks being too keen on merging with anyone.
Lrrr
They need to just have two separate competitions with a reduced format for the county comp, have one played May/June and one in July/August. Have the county one 3 groups of 6 with 5 group games. Top 2 automatics and two best third place going through to 1/4 finals. Because of the reduced number of matches each will become a lot more important as you can't go on a 2/3 game losing streak and still qualify easily. You can then have the new league as a round robin at the end of the season with a franchise system and round robin format being 7 games per team. Having a reduced 50 over cup can help this, 2 groups of 9 with 8 games each before semi finals. The reduction of games in the current two competitions would probably create another 10 plus game days that could be used for the new competition.
Lanterne Rouge
What about three divisions of six for the CC with one up and one down. You play the other five teams home and away so only ten games to fit in. Fit the rest in around it but with the T20 entirely in the school holidays.

22A
I think the first year it was three groups of six playing each other H&A, with the three group winners and the best 2nd placed county progressing to finals day. Two semis and then the final all on one day. That worked.
