You wonder though if you get best out of him again whether he’ll be back into the england fray! Quite a fall from grace

Yes there is that to consider. He could still get back to what he was in the right environment. Lancs tried to make him more expansive and aggressive in order to play one day cricket and it didn't work. Then Allott stuck his oar in and destroyed what was left of his confidence.

Keep him away from limited overs cricket, let him concentrate on 4 day stuff, and you never know.

This Hundred is really shiteeee, I hope it totally bombs.

If split into city's who decided Southampton and Cardiff, both smaller places than Bristol, should be represented?

Cardiff will get less support than Glamorgan (already one of the worst supported counties) on a like for like basis because the latter was acceptable as the South Wales team whereas no one from say Swansea is going to watch Cardiff.

In fact the absolute only place in the country that could increase their support is Bristol, due to the current split of Bristolian and surrounding area support between Glos and Somerset.

Absolutely bonkers

The format of the game is:

  • 100 balls per innings
  • A change of ends after 10 balls
  • Bowlers deliver either five or 10 consecutive balls
  • Each bowler can deliver a maximum of 20 balls per game
  • Each bowling side gets a strategic timeout of up to two and a half minutes
  • A 25-ball powerplay start for each team
  • Two fielders are allowed outside of the initial 30-yard circle during the powerplay
  • Teams will be able to call timeouts, as has been the case in the Indian Premier League since 2009
  • A simplified scoreboard is also proposed

I don't see what it'll offer the prospective fan that T20 doesn't already. Whilst at the same time completely alienating large chunks of existing support.

Like the IPL they will fill the grounds with free tickets and then declare it a success!

With no team to support I wouldn’t bother with free tickets. For me, as for most of us it’s about getting behind your team.

Its crazy not to have a West Country team. Taunton is a cricket hotbed, Gloucestershire play in Briz.

and Cardiff isn't interested in supporting Glamorgan, which is very ironic

The support for cricket in Cardiff is one of the lowest in county cricket.

Taunton is the countries cricketing hotbed, it would be the first place I'd hold games outside of the big cities. Or at least share it with Bristol.

Personally I'd rather visit the dentist, so glad it's not here.  The decision is apparently a way of compensating Glamorgan for not having test matches anymore. Money before sense, hope it goes tits up in year one

Completely agree, I won't be going anywhere near Cardiff to watch any of the fixtures

To be honest I am not sure I would have gone to Taunton either though

Jason Kerr expects Somerset’s current squad to peak over the next two years and finally deliver a first-ever County Championship title.

The head coach admits there is still a “huge sense of disappointment” over last week’s drawn game at Taunton, which saw Essex crowned champions and Somerset finish runners-up for the sixth time this century.

Kerr is delaying a debrief until the players have had a break and insists that by the time they reconvene the more positive aspects of one of the best season’s in the club’s history will have resurfaced.

He said: “We won a trophy for the first time in 14 years, which was huge in proving to ourselves we could do it, and with a bit more luck with the weather last week I believe we would have won and finished champions.

“For the next couple of seasons our senior players will still be capable of major contributions, the likes of the Overtons, Lewis Gregory and Jack Leach will be at the height of their powers, while Tom Banton, George Bartlett and other youngsters will only get better.

“There is so much to look forward to in the short-term. And after that it is down to myself, Andy Hurry and our Academy to ensure new players come into the side to keep us moving forward.”

Tim Groenewald has left to join Kent and there have been strong rumours about interest in Dom Bess and Eddie Byrom. But Kerr is optimistic of holding onto Somerset’s best young players.

“I believe Dom and Eddie will stay,” he said. “Of course, they have to do what they consider best for their futures, but we are building something special and they have a part to play.

“Sometimes as a player you have to be patient. A perfect example of someone who has benefited from that quality is Josh Davey.

“He did really well for us in 2018 and then started this season in good form, only to suffer an injury after helping us to win the Royal London One-Day Cup.

“That cost him his first-team place through no fault of his own and, while it was frustrating, he worked his way back into the side.

“The grass is not always greener elsewhere.

"We could lose Jack Leach to England a fair bit next season, which might well create more chances for Dom, while Eddie has suffered from George Bartlett doing so well from the start of this summer, but is still highly regarded.

“If we are to achieve the success we all want, we need strength in depth and stiff competition for places, so we will do all we can to hang onto the players we have developed.”

Kerr will be holding meetings with director of cricket Andy Hurry, captain Tom Abell and T20 skipper Gregory in the coming weeks at which the signing of overseas players for 2020 will be high on the agenda.

Babar Azam proved the most successful recruit this summer and the head coach would love to see him back in some capacity next season.

“Having the number one T20 batsman in the world was great for us,” said Kerr. “Of course, we would like him back, but first we have to study international schedules for next year, as well as the changes to the domestic calendar.

“It may be that we look at getting a top one-day player for the early season and a different one for the later Championship games. Ideally, we like continuity, but it is not always possible.”

I can only hope that the #WeAreSomerset and lack of any hundred hashtags is intended as a slight two fingered salute to the ECB.

I'm almost certain of this, although I don't know how slight it is! The use of quotation marks for the words "local icon" is also about as unsubtle as it gets.

Good on them, it's an absolute joke. You'd be pretty livid anyway if you were Somerset or Glos without the Cardiff franchise claiming your players as local icons. They might as well have announced Bairstow as the local icon.

What a ****** pile of shit !  Just when I thought cricket couldn't get dumbed down more than T20 'ECCB prove me wrong !  I trust no Glos players will be playing and who the **** from this side of the bridge would go and watch it, supporting Wales FFS. If it's GOT to be anything ,it should be Western whatever.................I really pray that it dies on it's arse and we get back to PROPER cricket ¬:grr:

They might as well invite Glasgow in and call them Celtic Rangers, at least that would make it interesting OFF the pitch !
