I’ve just come in for a break from the beach here in Greece. Little coverage on BBC Sport website, which basically seems to believe now that only Test cricket exists.

However, they do have a “pick your Championship team of the season” feature which sets out the averages as an aide. I see Somerset have no batsmen in the top 20 of the averages - but 6 of the top 20 bowlers! Seems to tell a tale.

Try this - there is also live commentary.

I wouldn't be surprised to see the ECB dock us points after deeming it to be an unplayable pitch despite the game being in Southampton.

I have never seen a ball move around as much as this. It's pretty crazy. Abell bowled one a minute that hoped along to second slip, the batsmen didn't even play at it..

20 extras in 15 overs, WTF are they teaching down at Glos, 3rd game in a row I've seen them concede a ridiculous amount.

31 in 36 now!

I think it's when you are striving, really striving for wickets it makes this more likely.

Worc 71 for 5

Now 150/5...think Worcestershire's tail can be quite weak though so get one and a few quick ones might follow! 🤞

Dawson gone now too. I hope we have a strong start as the weather looks a bit better for batting tomorrow.

Everything I had heard and read about this pitch prior to this morning was that it was a typical one on which, upon winning the toss, the decision would have been, indisputably, to bat first and score high - hence, presumably, the reason Tom Abell chose to contest the toss, rather than choosing to bowl in overcast conditions.

Unfortunately, as it would have seemed at 10H00 this morning, TB lost the toss and Hampshire chose to bat.

We have benefited from the weather, both in Southampton and in Chelmsford, and I just hope we don't throw away this absolutely wonderful first day of our penultimate Championship match - 9 down as I type, although Surrey are also 2 down.

196 AO. Over to you batsmen.

We'd have taken that before play this morning, time will tell how good a score it is.

Worcestershire 196/8- reasonably happy with that...

Make that 9!

Scoring pretty quickly so it's hard to tell if they have thrown away wickets or if it's one of those odd pitches that's good for batting and bowling- from 71/5 it's perhaps a bit much. From 153/5 though, yeah gotta be fairly happy? If it's one of those then if we bat fairly steadily maybe we can make a reasonable score.

One did bring a fairly quick few.

In the stars 😅🥰 ?

Last week, Ryan ten Doeschate, the Essex captain won the toss and (erroneously, as it transpired) put Warwickshire in to bat.

This morning, Tom Abell forfeited the right to bowl first in overcast conditions, and opted for a toss, preferring to bat first on a fantastic pitch.

Unfortunately, Tom lost the toss, and here we are: Hold Tight!

Notable mention to Darren Stevens. Kent were 39-5 when he entered the fray and he's currently 191 not out off 188 balls. 140 of those were scored in the last session 😳

Get Tres back ffs.

I posted some months ago, wondering whether, following the departure of Ali, we might get Tres back for his 400 runs.

Obviously romantic, but....

221ao Worcestershire- not bad.

Currently ie in play we're in 3rd and 2 points off Northants, 10 ahead of Durham, 11 ahead of Sussex and 23 (though that'll imminently become 22) ahead of Glamorgan.

Given 2nd and 3rd go up, there's grounds for cautious optimism at this stage.

Or Eddie Byrom but why the hell we would pay out money to bring in someone with an average record to play I shall never know.

It even seems unfair on him to be expected to score runs in these circumstances

Off for bad light might not be the worst thing.

Tomorrow is warm and sunny, absolutely do not want to go back out again today.

Tres needs to be opening next week.

Highest First Class score for Darren Stevens

Yorks v Kent 356-5

A thick inside edge off Tim Bresnan moves Darren Stevens on to 207.

Patterson bowls. Billings gets a single to get Stevens back on strike.

Driven down the ground for four!

Darren Stevens has 211!

It's his highest ever score for Kent and the highest ever score for Kent against Yorkshire!

Well Done Darren - an old stalwart.

He's now out for 237. Unbelievable innings and I bet he didn't expect to beat his best first class score at the ripe old age of 43!

Gabriel strikes again, 6.50 runs an over no wickets. Who is this guy and why is he playing? Only known for calling Root a gayboy.

He is a genuine all rounder (totally crap at everything). With no wickets and conceding a bucketful of runs, his total of 3 runs at an average of 1.5 means his batting is slightly better than his bowling.  I do not know if he had any commitments (so not sure if this would have been possible), but surely  they could have kept AJ Tye for a few weeks of red ball cricket.  Or actually any one of us would have done better!

Not to mention what were they thinking about signing a player who has been suspended due to homophobic abuse!

Indeed, and what a wonderful finale to his career.

As a Somerset fan, I remember wishing the same for Courtney Walsh.

Lancs have lost Glenn Maxwell for the last 2 games as he's gone home to prepare for the start of their domestic season, so presumably the other Aussies playing county cricket are in the same boat. If we'd got to T20 finals day, we'd have had to do without both Maxwell and Faulkner because of it.

Worcester usually a pretty lively wicket, probably more so in September.

Should be a result either way, weather aside.

Curious if Siddle can play for Essex next week as he can’t of originally planned to have been in the Ashes squad?

Well today is a pretty big day. Glorious sunny weather. Bat well and could have a great chance of 20+ points. Bat shite and we’re relying on Surrey.

Its going to be the later isn’t it?

I know I am the eternal pessimist but does anyone else have a bad feeling about today?

I'd like us and Surrey to both still be batting this time tomorrow
