Brighton-lessons to be learned

Watching the match on Tuesday you had to admire the things that Brighton did to find space and the one that stood out for me was at throw ins.

When we get a throw in it is just try to get it back to the thrower who is usually closed down, but Brighton when they get a throw in, move as little as us, but as soon as the ball is behind the head there are several player moving and available to receive the ball.

Why don't we do something different like a scissor movement just to find a free man ?

Something else that Brighton did was to put a man on the back post at corners, its not rocket science  so what do we do in training ?

Reckon our Lee isn't too egotistical or naive to discount the successful tactics and attributes of clubs leading the way in this division.

He is still a wet-eared student of the management game, and he knows it and will be on the case ... I'm sure of this !

Listening to his Radio Briz interview I get the feeling that, just like his pop, he lives the job 24-7.

Sleep and family become an inconvenient (but pleasant & necessary) interruption to the work cycle for him.

One thing Brighton did was their homework!!! Every goal kick was pumped out towards Vyner, every attack was aimed down the left hand side, the game in my opinion was lost because of this.. Had a more experienced right back been played we would most definitely have been in the game in the second half after quite a positive start!!

injurys may have forced our hand in the lineup, they certainly played a massive part in the result..!!

We've got a long way to go with two in-form teams to play in the next two games there will be blips and highs but it's still a team learning and they will learn from Tuesday.

we will lose games and we'll win enough to stay up, plenty of opportunity for the forum to implode between now and May

I've been watching City for 27 years now. God knows how many managers & players have been through the door but in all that time we have never been any good at throw ins!

Apart from JETS maybe ;-)

But I agree...we are awful at throw ins.

Very little movement...and no intent by the thrower, to throw to the correct side, or foot...most, often bouncing high, so the receiver has to spend time controlling.

It's a basic...that abroad is focussed on...obviously not here.

It's something I've noticed like yourself.

Did nothing for MK Dons last Saturday.

When was our last set piece specialist? A bloke who you could always rely on to deliver or have a genuine chance of scoring from a free kick?

Mickey Bell or Tinns?

It's something I've noticed over the years. Players can be fit and technically sound...but the standard of delivery at corners and freekicks, is generally poorer these days.

Which when you consider how near perfect pitches are, seems ridiculous.

I'm actually astounded at how poor they are generally.

I used to take set pieces when playing...and I'd practice for hours getting it perfect.

It bothers me that Professionals can be so inconsistent in their delivery.

And the ridiculous thing with that, was that although JET had the longest throw of any City player in recent history, we hardly ever let him take one!

It's very surprising isn't it.  I played with a guy (left back), who knew when I'd give my marker a little shove, turn and become available.  He also could throw it to the spot for a simple volley lay off.  Made it easy for me.  The right back was complete opposite. At your chin, bouncing two feet in front of you, or with no pace so that your marker could really pressure you.

Blocking off isn't that difficult to do either, but obviously in the pro game, players are much more wise, and it becomes too obvious.
