An amusing story in the news today, regarding one of the staff at Bristol City

Giacomo Licata promised pal Stephen O’Farell free haircuts for life if his national side lost to Ireland in the 1994 World Cup - and it cost him £12,000

Stephen O'Farrell with his friend Italian barber, Giacomo Licata

A barber who lost a football bet 22 years ago wants to go double or quits for Euro 2016, after giving a customer £12,000 worth of haircuts for free.

Italian Giacomo Licata, 50, promised pal Stephen O’Farell, 58, free haircuts for life if his national side lost to Ireland in the 1994 World Cup.

Despite being the overwhelming favourites Italy went down 1-0 and, true to his word, Giacomo has given Stephen free haircuts every month since - around £12,000-worth.

But the football-mad barber is now desperately trying to put Stephen’s free ride to an end with a new wager, offering him the chance to go “double or quits”.

Italy face Ireland in this month’s Euro 2016 tournament and if the Azzurri win Giacomo will start charging his pal for each trim, reports the Irish Mirror.

But if Ireland win he will continue cutting Stephen’s hair for free - AND give him a bottle of wine whenever he comes in.

Giacomo said: “We always do something for the Euros and this is the first time Italy and Ireland have met in an international competition for more than 20 years.

“It seemed like the perfect time to revive the bet.”

The pair’s wager started 22 years ago, when Italy and Ireland were drawn in the same qualifying group in the World Cup held in the US.

Italy lost 1-0, with Ray Houghton scoring the winning goal in the 11th minute.

Since the match, Stephen has received around 1,200 free monthly haircuts at an average cost of £10 per trim.

Giacomo, who runs a barber shop in Filton, Bristol, said: “I remember the game so well. My first thought was about the competition and then I remembered the bet.

“There was a fair bit of teasing afterwards.”

He added: “I have said to Stephen that if Italy win, he will have to start paying for his cuts.

“But if Ireland win I will continue to give him his cuts for free and will give him a bottle of wine each time he comes in.

“It is only a bit of fun, but I am feeling good about it. Saying that, I was confident last time and look how that ended.”

Stephen, of Filton, who is a retail concessions manager for Bristol City FC, is quietly optimistic ahead of the June 22 clash.

He said: “Ireland are going in as the underdogs again, we are certainly seen as the minnows, but no one likes to play Ireland because they never give up.

“I think it comes down to how Ireland play in their first match against Sweden. If they are on form, then I think we stand a fair chance.”

Stephen said he was not too worried at the prospect of losing his free trims.

He added: “I’m not worried at all. I will take it in good humour. If Italy win, I will spend the day sweeping hair at the shop.”

The pair plan to watch the match separately but have promised to text each other at the final whistle.

The maths really doesn't stack up on this. £12,000 over 22 years is £545 per year. They said it's £10 a haircut and therefore he spends £54.50 on haircuts each month or in other words has 5 haircuts a month?

Edit - no prizes for guessing what I do for a living...
