Ashton Gate Residents Parking

Typical stirring from the W***Post.

I think you will find that there are still plenty of locals who watch the footy and have no objection to fans parking in the area. Personally I only have a gripe with BCFC/BS paying for cones to be placed on the roads around AG when they are ignored. Why bother and why pay someone to do it?

If we are serious about making the club truly great, there has to be a transport strategy worthy of the name.  The Ashton Gate Halt project needs to procees and there MUST be good and regular matchday connections to all points in the area - I would suggest that should include Gloucestershire, Somerset and the whole of Greater Bristol.  Coaches and coach parks need to be sorted and Ashton Vale could be made into a monster car park - that could be used for other functions as well when car parks are not needed.  The Long Ashton Park and Ride should be used for match day parking and hopefully the Metro Bus will contribute. With really well thought out match day busses, this could all work wonderfully - but it DOES need a top person to make it happen!

If the Ashton vale land is still owned or at least available would it make sense to creat a humongous multi storey car park to absorb the match day parking which would also double as a dog walking altitude training and shitting space on non matchdays, to be shared with gypo's with rock removal and litter enhancement of the environment ??? Just a thought, Na, talking bollox again

A large part of the solution lies with First Bus.

The lack of services from the centre to Ashton Gate is shocking - and that's me being generous in thinking that they have the ability to get people to the centre.

I can get to the centre no probs, I usually walk down the docks from there or take the water taxi to the nova, if it's pissing down a bus to the bus station then the portishead bus to the ground-ish, on a good day I walk from Hanham to the feeder then through to bemmie, long walk I know but the pub crawl is good there on in, i have been known to not even make it to the game.....damn first bus

The halt wouldn't be able to cope, being only a singular line.  The police will continue to object it ever being used on match days anyways...

That is disappointing - could it be used as a shuttle between two extremities? It would seem strange if it could not ferry fans away from the congested area around Ashton Gate.  I thought it was on the line to Portishead.  Not sure where it might terminate.

Whatever money BCFC finally pay to the council, it'll be utterly wasted.

When it comes to traffic and parking, the council haven't a scooby. Their most innovative solution on dealing with parking? They ban it. Job done.

The stadium has been there for over 100 years. The parking issues have been almost ever-present. Why do their efforts always come across as if this problem has bitten them on the backside by surprise?

Let's not forget that a BIG part of the problem is the anti-car, anti-football, anti-progress NIMBY attitude of a lot of the new breed of BS3 residents. The opposition to ANYTHING to do with City on the local Facebook groups is staggering. I'd highly recommend joining the "Southville, Ashton and Bedminster Information Board" and checking out the, sadly all too frequent, posts regarding parking, behaviour and inconvenience caused by BCFC.

I have no issues!! I can catch either the 24, w1, X1, x2, x3, x6, x8 and x9 from the centre. One stops outside and the others stop on top of the bridge outside Sam fm.

The big problem is that First Bus do not run any services to/from Temple Meads to Bedminster and Ashton. Also the number 24 is a single decker with lower capacity than any other Bristol bus route.

That is a scandal!!  Many people living outside Bristol cannot easily use the train services from Temple Meads due to the awkward bus links and unhelpful train scheduling.  It would be so simple to sort this lot out - BUT we need the right person to knock heads together.

The problem is that no one wants to foot the bill for any kind of service to the public! A ideal solution would be 10 double decker buses paid for by bcfc to be dotted around Bristol (say 2 buses in 5 areas for arguments sake). These would be ran privately by bcfc and all money made would go to the up keep of the buses and the general running of them. Of course I don't know the cost of all thi! But it's an idea.

I'd argue it's not just a big part of the parking problem but the entire problem.

Without the local residents whinging about match day parking there would be no issue at all. I wonder if they complain about the rugby parking as well?

They were complaining about roars from crowds only last week.........ffs.....

Getting To AG on any bus is No Problem for Afternoon or Evening games... Getting home is the Problem. It is Not so easy if you want to stay after the match to socialise as the Abus leave directly their bus is full and the w1, X1, x2, x3, x6, x8 and x9 busses are few and far between. (Especially at night). I tried out the Portway P&R on Saturday and found it very Good.. My concern is what happens if you stay after the match and there is No Bus when you get out ?  !! It's a long way to walk to the Portway P&R. Perhaps BS could show on the screens when Busses were on station at AG or FB on their website so fans would not need to worry about missing a bus.

Agreed. The post about the noise was a new low. The mind boggles at their level of self-entitlement and importance.

you have highlighted my main concern there will always be a reason why someone can't P&R and absolutely has to park at the ground. If they ran 2 busses for every major location there would still be complaints.

e.g. if they ran 2 busses from Gordano 1 early and 1 late they would still not be the perfect time for everyone and people that took the bus would complain about being 10 minutes later than normal and missing the start of their shift ect or people saying they want to stay around in Bristol for a couple of hours ect while you would have the people that have driven saying how much easier it was due to less car's - the people on the busses would then wonder why they were taking the busses so would drive in and your back to square 1.

IMO you have to build infra to take the busses then run the busses (half empty if need be) then you need all the local car parks to start increasing prices and make the whole area a no parking zone for match days with heavy fines - This would take BS local car parks and the council working together so it would take at least 3 years (no council moves quickly especially BCC) cost a small fortune to organise so probably isn't worth the hassle to BS who already have quite a bit on there plate what with people wanting to know everything else that's going on at the club to smallest detail.

Nothing will ever get done as no one wants to make the first move!

they all have their agendas and legacies and nobody wants to be the one who spent the most money.

My work for example, they always ask to watch how much we spend on parts to fix things we maintain! On the flip side my argument is, if it needs it I will spend! Clearly the area is crying out for better transport but who's going to make the first move? BCC are clearly waiting on BS having to make the first expensive move!

I tried the port way park and ride , was pretty good. Drove in no problem 4quid , dropped off outside kfc.   Only problem was bus needs to be parked somewhere up the road nearer the North Somerset side as you are only sat in traffic , adding to the congestion!   Me and my lad speed walked and the first bus was full ... Think that must be the dolman bus !   Overall a good experience.

Maybe we can't totally write off matchday use...

The West of England Joint Transport Board will be receiving an update on the station at its meeting on 9th September.

"The CH2M land take study for Ashton Gate station commissioned by Bristol City Council has been completed. The study has identified a red line area for a spur line, bay platform, footbridge/subway and holding pens required for a stadium station. Highway access would be via Baron’s Close from Winterstoke Road."

Holding pens would suggest matchday use isn't being totally ruled out.

CH2M = CH2M HILL - a global engineering company that provides consulting, design, construction, and operations services for corporations, and federal, state, and local governments.
