Birmingham City memories.

January 1964. On a train going to Sunderland for FA Cup tie. Left Parson Street at 11pm Friday night. Steam loco broke down on the stretch of line directly behind St Andrews stand behind the goal. Freezing weather, snowing and after about two hours, we were all pretty well pissed off. One of the lads picked up his big wooden rattle, opened a window and twirled it around a few times. Immediately a few lights came on in the houses next to the track and a couple of big blokes came out into the back yards. We thought they were going to try to get into the carriage but at that moment, the replacement loco started us moving and saved us from a thrashing. We lost 1-6 at Sunderland.

1990. Arrived by car at St Andrews and found some waste land about three minutes walk from the ground. City were playing well that season under Joe J. As I got out of the car, a boy about nine or ten informed me that he did a car minding service for 50p. I, being a coward, paid up and he immediately said "I've now got enough to go to the match". I asked him about our deal for car minding, thinking that the car was now likely to be trashed by other kids. He said, "That's OK, my little brother over there will mind it." He was about three.

Fair do's to the little un. After seeing City and Bob Taylor, smash the Blues out of sight 4-0, my car was still in one piece.

1951. FA Cup tie at St Andrews. Lost 2-0.Very young and don't remember much about it.

Now this is a bit sketchy. Remember sitting on the wall of the enclosure. Ball come over . Bob Taylor overhead kick 1 0 . About the 80 th minute . Can someone verify this or am I going mad

Not going mad

It was an early game in the 89-90 play off season , evening game.  ( Possibly first home game ?)

As you say a worldly overhead from SuperBob 1-0

Loads of Bluenoses in Open End and a decent atmosphere

Edit

Just checked

26/08/89

Was first home game

Notice the crowd was 8938  - would have thought more - an extra 17-18000 for this fixture Sat

As Cidered has mentioned the return at St Andrews was a great day out

Smashed them 4-0 with a big away following

Still have this game (Full game) on VHS somewhere !

The return walk from Birmingham New Street to St Andrews before and after was 'interesting'  to say the least !

Thanks to @1960maaan

2m 06 secs in , a few mins of highlights

As an aside , at 24.06 is Jon Lansdowns first ever City game , the game where SL took him  to AG thanks to a couple of complimentaries from Des Williams

The walk to the sodding coaches in the car park after that game was interesting enough as well!

Seem to remember there were a lot of buildings that had been demolished around the ground and a few bricks made contact with the stream of coaches winding their way through the carnage. What a day out though, absolutely in my top 5 away days ever

Was bloody freezing though!

Yes there was Woodsy - a big wasteland behind away end

We got 'bottled up' and got taken to and 'bottled' at the ground (o/s the away end) at about 11.30 !!!

Remember watching the 'Zulus' gradually gathering and skulking across the wasteground looking for a full on confrontation

It was so similar to the Film Zulu it was comical

Remember the helicopter searchlights and the complete bedlam after !!

Crazy day out

Was so good following that Promotion side , so many great away days / nights out - went to every one and so glad I did

I have a memory but it's not exactly a positive one.

1998/1999...we were battling hard vs the drop, had at least shown some spirit in April. A possible (unlikely but not impossible) Great Escape under Benny. Think we won 3 and drew 1 ouf of 5 games in during April prior to this. I was quite young then so I still believed, first season in fact.

Anyway yeah Birmingham...remember it being an excellent atmosphere and pretty sure we went in 1 up. We scored first, and the Great Escape seemed on. Was a pretty feisty game, we had a goal disallowed and then a point v a play off pushing Birmingham side would frankly have been not the worst. Then? they got a penalty. And it was never a penalty! Never. I believe also vaguely that Trevor Francis had a ruck with a steward in the tunnel post match?

So while it wasn't the game that officially relegated us, that was next week at Sheff Utd, it was I think the game where hopes really began to slip away, to recede.

As such I hope we return the favour on Sunday- Blackburn probably won't overtake them but I would certainly like to see them slip out after the 1999!

In our first season in Div 1 (76/77) I remember going to St Andrews in April with my brother, we had seats behind the goal near the front so we didn't have any cover from the roof. Trevor Francis tore through our defence and we were 3-0 down at half time (that turned out to be the final score). At half time, just when we thought it couldn't get worse there was a snowstorm (unfortunately not enough to call off the game).

Another game, New Years Day in 1972 we beat them 1-0 with John Galley scoring with a bullet header from outside the penalty box, probably the best headed goal I've ever seen.

Was a great day, sun was shining, really warm day, what sticks in my mind was the heighth of the terrace we were on, Bryant and May, sure we scored just after we entered the ground  4mins!

What a match that was, we were on fire that day, from start to finish it was carnival like, mind you i suppose going top of the table helped.

Great day from a season of great memories.

I'm sure they were chanting "Zulu gonna get ya, Zulu gonna get ya", or I am I getting a little carried away here ?!

Glad my memory isn't failing me here! First time I'd witnessed that kind of stuff on an away day, I was only 16 at the time. Scared the shit out of myself all day, but loved every second of it. Some of the stories were certainly getting embellished come 10pm and we were back home, safe and a few cans down!

Pretty sure you're right about the two early goals, weren't we 3 up at h/t. Think you're wrong about the weather, this was early January (in my head at least!) and it was freezing. Remember someone was selling those bulldog t shirts outside saying 'BCFC - these colours don't run' and people were sticking them on over jumpers / coats etc. What were we thinking!?

Was going to mention this, GB. I'm sure there were pockets of Zulu's in the away end with us. I'm sure we were stood next to a group of 8 to 10 of them in the first half. Didn't celebrate any of the goals, didn't join in the songs. Remember it all kicked off at h/t, hearing bodies / heads being slammed against the toilet walls by the ever friendly WMP. When we found our spot again the lads had gone. Whether they had started something, or moved I don't know. I was just glad they were gone. We were well within the 'first slap' zone!!! 16 and 8st wringing wet, it wouldn't have been much of a fight!

Coincidentally, the game verses Bury on 20/1/90 was the first game my old man ever took me too.  I was eight.

I have a couple of other uncanny coincidences with SL and Jon; sadly being a billionaire isn't one of them!

As for Brum, Akinbyi bouncing a sitter over the bar stands out.  We haven't actually played them that many times in my 27 years, I don't think.

I was also up there... remember being locked in the away end whilst the Zulu's were "having their say" outside. I was happy to be in a car outta that place pretty damned quick

Remember that goal was either Birmingham or Blackburn 4-2 home game first of the season if I recall

Blackburn (4-2) was the first game of the following season , after promotion

Great game , hair sunny day and goals galore

Think your username made his debut

As an aside - did you realise Louis Donowa played for Willem II ( Surely the only player to have represented both clubs ?)

It was nuts that day, loads of City in the stand to our right, massive punch up at halftime in there, chopper in the sky after and a nice little escorted walk to a local train station after where WMP laid on a special for us

Remember when we were bottled up outside the ground way before KO one City Lad suddenly deciding to do a one man attack / charge on the Police Lines to try and get to the Zulus !!!

No, it was definitely scorchio. I took some photos that day:

This one, above, was on the pitch. We were tooled up, mind. And better clobber than them, too.

Zulu-Attack1.jpg.0eef61ee584cfbdd26401633ca6a6639.jpg

This one was in that wasteland car park, afterwards. CATS had left, but we hung on as long as we could. They over ran us in the end though. Bloody hundreds of them.

Distinctly remember the 4-0 win, think they'd only conceded 5 at home, we rock up and smash in 4!

Looked like most of the CSF turned up that day at the back of the stand, all stood up and looking menacing...thinking as a young 19 yr old 'we ain't geting touched today'...seem to remember being met by a flurry of baggage trollies being thrown down the concourse steps at New Street station and chants of 'Zulus'!.

Memories eh.....

January 1966 FA Cup at Brum. Our game was called off on a Friday night due to snow. Straight down the Gate on Saturday morning and managed to get on a coach albeit the one that was staying at the Brum Supporters Club after the game. Could have been early coach 1.

Lost 3-2 and I think Big John scored two and hit the post late on. However, the highlight was a mass snowball fight between the two sets of supporters the balls containing more lumps of ice than snow!

He'll of a good night in the club afterwards though.

I traveled up with a few of the lads who were in that stand, they still talk of their shenanigans to this day, that was one of the great and memorable away days from arriving at new street at 10:00, the threatening walk to Small Heath, the fantastic performance and eventful escorted walk back to the nearest station for our "special" without doubt the most memorable season in my time for away games, Cardiff, Swansea and a crazy day at Bolton spring to mind!!!
