It is understood that there is some anger within the ECB about how the first positive Covid tests within the India squad occurred. Head coach Ravi Shastri, who tested positive last Saturday and was forced to miss part of the fourth Test and the whole of the scheduled fifth one, attended a busy book launch at a London hotel the previous week. The Indians did not seek, nor obtain, dispensation from the ECB to attend the event. England’s cricketers had been instructed to refrain from attending any public events, or any situations where they might be put in close contact with those outside the squad and support staff.

Shastri, alongside India captain Virat Kohli and other playing members of the squad, attended the book launch at St James’ Court hotel in London in the days leading up to the Oval Test. None of India’s players tested positive but four members of India’s backroom staff since did. The event was attended by members of the public, without masks or other PPE equipment and without any social distancing with the India players.

Bought tickets in September 2019 for the test at Old Trafford last year, had them rolled over to this year, now still not watching it as India’s players have decided that actually they don’t fancy it an IPL is round the corner. Class.

The ECB will just do absolutely nothing as it’s India, whereas other countries get treated with utter contempt and we may play them occasionally and they should feel themselves lucky. Broken sport.

In fact the ECB will probably ask India to allow their players to play in the Crisps Invitational next season, and see that as agreeable compensation.

Still, guess it means I can now see Nige and the lads tomorrow instead..

To call it off this morning is a joke. There will be many people who've travelled to Manchester today, hotels booked for weekend etc.

Also absolutely rubbish for Lancs who probably need the revenue after last 18 months.

Yeah, I saw a tweet from someone who'd left Salisbury at 5am this morning and got as far as Birmingham. There'll be loads in the same boat.

I suspect Lancs will be claiming back every penny that they can from the BCCI. As will the ECB, Sky, BBC etc. Could cost millions.

Assume that is based on the ECB statement that has since been altered to not mention forfeit. Definitely not forfeited yet. Just cancelled

Yeah, I suspect there's an ongoing row about that.

The alternative is that India play a one-off Test next summer when they're over here for white ball stuff.

Or they don't want to have to isolate for the start of the IPL.  Depends which way you look at it. Didn't they have cases in the backroom before the 3rd and 4th tests?  Just wondering why the change of stance now.

Spot on Tom. The IPL is a huge and very lucrative league particularly for the players, the broadcasters and of course Indian tourism and for it to continue to be the best T20 competition worldwide they need the best players to be available. Having to miss matches because of having to isolate would hugely weaken the competition.

Yep, can see that now. So no players affected and all passed PCR tests, just backroom staff. So India can actually field a team, they just don't want to....right, thanks for the series win, we're off to the IPL, see ya!

Really poor by India.

Is it?  I’m not so sure.
India haven’t won a series in England in decades (1971) and were very handily placed at 2-1 to win another series. They’d have been desperate to do it again.

However the upcoming IPL would have been a huge factor in the decision as Tom pointed out.

As we know, covid can take a while to show on a test, so they could still have covid.  I’ve actually not got any issue with them saying we might have covid so don’t want to play and risk spreading it but just volunteer a forfeit

Obviously not that desperate.

Feel sorry for @tin who was heading up yesterday.

I know a few people who were going today who luckily live close enough to have not set off yet.

Thanks but no need, @Northern Red. We always come up to OT for the Test and stay with a good mate up here, so we’ll be fine. A pub crawl awaits! Others won’t be so fortunate.

It’s a complete joke to call it off this morning, mind, especially with many of these players due to play in the IPL in 10 days or so.

Absolutely nail on the head.

County Cricket has been under threat for sometime and now it seems that even Test Cricket is taking a back seat to the IPL.

Shameful treatment of fans and very short sighted. All very well making loadsamoney now, but where will the cricketers of the future come from?

There's no Test at OT next year, so, depending on the 2023 schedule, if Jimmy ever plays another Test on his home ground he could be 41 years old.

Realistically how long has he got? Still looked pretty fit in the field and bowled at good pace.
