So why exactly has Crane been picked over Leach?

Probably because last winter he went to play Club cricket in Australia, did really well and got picked for the state side (Queensland?).  So he has recent successful experience in the conditions we're playing in.  Makes perfect sense to me.

I do have a degree of sympathy, the other guy clearly tries to bottle the third person with Hales and Stokes, can see why he saw the red mist and wanted to batter him

If that’s the case, then I also have a degree of sympathy and am glad there was no CCTV or camera phones when I was a regular in town........

Yes, you can see the lad going to throw the bottle towards Stokes' mate but Stokes intervenes and starts fighting the lad. I think the problem is that after that there is a full 30 seconds of Stokes launching punches/kicks at the lad whilst he is backing away and throwing no punches. He has no right to claim self-defence at this point as the bottle is no longer in play. The court will just say at this point he should've walked away.

He'll be off to the magistrates court and get a fine would be my guess and he won't be going to the Ashes.

For me he went beyond self defence and became the assaulter. If I was the ECB he would not be on the plane.

Having just watched it again, it isn't even the lad who had the bottle who Stokes ends up attacking! The lad with the bottle has a black hoodie on and that's who Stokes initially jumps on but then he moved on to start whacking the lads mate who doesn't appear to throw a single punch the whole time and is instead backing away and seems to be trying to calm things down whilst Stokes continues to throw punches and eventually ko him.  He'll surely get done for this and rightfully so IMO.

It's sad as he is such a brilliant player. Not the first brilliant all-rounder England have produced to struggle with booze. But as you say, rightfully so

Obviously we don't know the full story. But one person has a weapon in his hand that could kill someone. If Ben stokes wasn't involved people would be saying fair play for defending yourself or your friends. He had a weapon

Fists are a weapon too mate. Throwing a big right hand on someone who isn't defending themselves could have had devastating consequences. The same, if not worse, than a bottle.

That's true . Unsavoury video. Either way our chances off winning the ashes have just become a lot more difficult. Shame love watching stokes play. But his position comes with responsibility. Interesting outcome

Yep. If that bloke goes down and hits his head on the pavement then he's not waking up again.

And it looked as though the assault continued whilst the guy was on the floor despite presumably Hales trying desperately to drag him off.

There is a point where this is no longer self defence and becomes an assault.
