Yes, you can see the lad going to throw the bottle towards Stokes' mate but Stokes intervenes and starts fighting the lad. I think the problem is that after that there is a full 30 seconds of Stokes launching punches/kicks at the lad whilst he is backing away and throwing no punches. He has no right to claim self-defence at this point as the bottle is no longer in play. The court will just say at this point he should've walked away.

He'll be off to the magistrates court and get a fine would be my guess and he won't be going to the Ashes.

Spot on with your summary of pretty zero chance of a self defence ,defence Kid

But having seen the video , dependent on injuries etc I can see Stokes , cause of the continued assaults , being charged with affray, with a chance he could see a short term inside

(Not saying that would be right - just what I can foresee)

So for me the only way we can win in Aus is to sort the batting. The solution for me is Root at 3. He needs to step up and be the next Vaughan or Ponting, so if we lose that early wicket, to stand his ground. Even if his average goes down, it would give a chance to whoever is batting 4 and 5 to face and older ball and a less energetic attack, thus scoring more than we'd lose with Root.

Also if your captain is willing to take the bull by the horns then others may follow suit and our overall game may improve.

I'd also be tempted to play 6 bowlers (I know, I know) as Stokes, Woakes and Moeen are all effectively all-rounders. Take Crane so when the ball gets old, we can spin it both ways with Moeen and Crane. That said I may bring Wood in for Crane if he can prove his fitness as his pace would be valuable.

XI for 1st Test

  1. Cook
  2. Stoneman
  3. Root
  4. Malan
  5. Bairstow
  6. Stokes
  7. Ali
  8. Woakes
  9. Broad
  10. Anderson
  11. Crane

I agree re 6 bowlers - where's the problem if they also happen to be the best batsmen? Take Malan out , tell JB to just bat and add Foakes at 8 and you have removed 2 of the 3 problem positions, kept a decent tail. and given yourself a spare leggie. Might not work (probably won't) but beats recalling people who aren't good enough. It's really a needs must scenario.

However after we lose 4-1 Bayliss has to go as test coach. 2 wins this summer against teams with bigger holes than us doesn't mask 3 years of underachievment.

We won't lose 4-1.

Ben Stokes has been withdrawn from England's Ashes squad, pending further investigation into his alleged street brawl in Bristol last month. Steven Finn has been drafted into the squad in his place.

Just saw that this is on the day Finn's central contract ran out

Was going to say the same, massively different situations

Two events both on nights out where each person has punched someone, Root would have been perfectly within his rights of going to the police. Both claim to have been defending someone else over their actions.

Wonder what they did?!

Bairstow, Ball and Plunkett fined and given formal written warnings for unprofessional conduct. And the reasons weren't given.

Supposedly all out on the same night as the Stokes incident just weren't with Stokes and Hales when it happened.

Very true, but I would say that Warner hit Root when they were all in the same bar, taking the piss out of each other and Warner punched Root ONCE

Stokes, is seen to hit people on NUMEROUS occasions, even after the incident had cooled down

True, flip side you could say was that Warner's punch was unprovoked. Guess I'd just believe until found guilty he should be allowed to continue as normal, as long as the police don't restrict his passport he should be allowed to go to Aus. If the guilty verdict comes back, fine throw the book at him.
