freezer
Maybe because the ladies over achieved, where as the men usually under achieve?
Erithacus
Very disappointing tonight, in an all-too-familiar way. We had plenty of talent, plenty of preparation and plenty of confidence but were not good enough in the final analysis. Yet again we have not quite reached our potential. When the moments came to capitalise, we didn't take the chances like the previous games. LIttle things perhaps, but the ones that matter in the end. Perhaps the tactics didn't include the options in different circumstances, as Graham Taylor discovered. Mark Sampson has just said he will go away and review his efforts to try to improve. We were guilty of some optimistic passing - too many long balls and not enough cohesion. Sound familiar? Given the early departure of the Germans and beating the tournament favourites, England had as good an opportunity to win a major trophy as we are likely to have. However, the wait will go on now. The Lionesses have improved noticeably in the recent years but so too have the other nations. It's a small point but the hosts have a number of WSL players. Meanwhile, the FA have invested more money in the national women's side than any others in Europe. Will this continue? But let's not take anything away from the Dutch - they were by far the better in the first half hour and took the lead at what has proved to be an important time. Their gameplan worked better than ours and had a significant edge in the passing quality. Looking at the earlier semi, they should put a load past the Danes. So here we are again, all left in a heap. Will the new League season be an antidote or more of the same?
Oops
The trouble is when you tell average players that they're great, they believe it. An average player who is told to improve will try much harder when not having smoke blown up his/ her arse. But that's been a uniquely English disease for decades unfortunately. Ladies got to the semi final of the World cup and the last European championships. With the men the doom starts before there was ever hope. BanburyRed
Poor. No plan B when it was obvious that the Dutch were the better team, especially in the first half. No real possession, too much long ball tactics, poor team shape. They probably found their level tonight, a game too far.
RUSSEL85
I know the BBC love to appear PC and 'progressive' but this really is a poor standard of football and has no place receiving such prominent mainstream coverage. I watched tonight's defeat and the quarter final against France and both were particularly wretched games of football.

An average player who is constantly told he is average at everything is likely to not improve. To create a growth mindset emphasis is placed on the positives. "You are a good player, you have great skills, you have every right to be on this pitch so how could we assist you to improve the elements of your game to turn good into great", is more likely to create a growth mindset. The women's team have reached a final and two semi finals in major championships in recent (eight) years. To view this in a negative context and in some cases extreme form is human. The human brain has a amazing capacity to be negative (the majority of thoughts are) sports psychology observes that the best turn that on its head - The successful see the positives in failure/setbacks and are upbeat in pursuit of excellence.
