Today's Ref

First off, we did not deserve to win today, OK, so this is not one of those "the ref cost us the game" posts.

But Christ, did he do his best to make an utterly shite game of football worse.

Surely he must have noticed that Millwall specialise in off the ball petty fouling, pulling, kicking the ball away at every opportunity, stopping it reaching the intended opposition player who is about to take a free kick and blatant time wasting?

Apparently not.

What a pedant he was, the ball has to be on the exact blade of grass but the fact that a Millwall player repeatedly stopped it getting there to take the free kick or kicked it away never, ever, got penalised.

The game was shit, we were poor, they played cynical hoofball, but boy oh boy, did he make it even worse.

******* clown.

Agreed. From the bits of the stream I saw, the ref was very poor in general, not just towards/against us...

Think Joe made a two footed sliding tackle in the 1st half, ref said play on. Also saw O'Dowda brought down in the 2nd and once again, a play on from the ref...

Really didn't help matters. But there we go.

Was the star of the show in his mind. Always said when you notice the ref it usually isn't a good day. Inconsistent and petulant about where free kicks and throw ins were taken. Just dreadful and no we didn't deserve to win but him blowing the whistle constantly suited Millwall much more who were basically time wasting from minute one.

Millwalls tactic today was to frustrate, to break up play, stop the flow, slow everything down. The referee was frustrating, pedantic, kept stopping play and slowing everything down. Played completely to their game plan.

His line painting annoyed the hell out of me; kept insisting on taking time to paint lines even when there wasn't a wall. And then he waits ages while they make a substitution, and then starts drawing lines, why couldn't he have done that while they're guy was strolling off.

And, someone who knows the rules better than I do may correct me, but didn't he get it wrong when he made Frankie retake that free kick because the ball didn't go out of the penalty area. I know that's the rule for goal kicks, but surely not for free kicks - and it clearly was a free kick.

Some Referee's understand that supporters  have paid good money to be entertained.

However there was never going to be any entertainment value from the game yesterday as there was far to much whistle and his petulance in dealing with free kicks meant the ball was out of play so much we didn't get value for money.

He needs to get a new career as a town planner or something equally boring and leave refereeing to someone who understands it better.

The daft thing was he was so pedantic about the free kicks being taken from the correct blade of grass, yet on at least three occasions the free kick ended up being taken from a spot about half a dozen blades of grass away. If he is going to make such a song and dance about it and hold up play to ensure the kick is taken from the precise spot then at least make sure it is the right spot.

Roll on the advent of 6G pitches, which, I've been reliably informed will light up the exact blade of grass where a foul is committed, and all the blades of grass in a line ten yards away also light up until after the free kick is taken. This will cut out a lot of this stuff and provide more entertaining football.

The 6G pitches will also be able to light up the blades of grass players are on the moment a ball is kicked, in the different colours of the two teams, thus making it easy to see if a player is offside etc. All this information is then relayed to the computer ref. No decision is thus ever wrong. It is reckoned that each single blade of grass will contain more intelligence than Fred Housego and when a player goes down injured will be able to tell straight away what is wrong with the player and if nothing is wrong be able to deliver an electric shock - with the agreement of the PFA - to instantly dispense justice to the guilty party.

Of course, crowds will find the officiating of the game rather sterile as every decision will be correct and therefore there will be nothing to have a dig at the computer/robot referee about. The only godsend being that because the computer ref would have a motherboard but no registered fatherboard, it's illegitimacy can still be called into question.
