Its related to turn overs ..

In field turn overs result in more shots on goal. Teams are more likely to concede a goal from a turn over than the opposition being in possession = Its better to kick the ball out of play than give it back in field = Don't lose it all.

In the EPL Bravos short distribution game and his consistently high passing ratio of 75 - 85% was top of the EPL Keepers or  always close to that standard. His long game turned over possession 92% of the time, he was the worst in the EPL by nearly 20%

But his short game meant far less shots on Man City's goal via turned over possession.

He also had a high intervention (sweeping) rate outside the box - Less shots on goal.

Played outside the box significantly - Less shots on goal.

Bravos shop stopping was the worst in the division. Rubbish. Worse than Championship Fielding ... But his footskills outweighed his ability with his hands.

Keepers being good footballers - Distributers v stop shots are becoming increasingly common.

In FA goalkeeping courses now it is emphasised that Keeping = Possession of the ball and the Keeper will use his feet far more than his hands. In all FA coaching it is emphasised that Keepers should be included in drills as outfield players.

The above is where Keeping has gone, and will stay unless there are changes in the back pass and offside rules.

Nice info.

I recall Edwin Van der Sar say that the first attribute they look for in a keeper these days is how good is he on the ball.  They reckon they can coach goalkeeping skills but not the general football stuff.

I've never been too sure about Frankie but he has made an excellant start to the season.

However, I agree completely with what you say about his distribution being too slow. Drives me mad when we get a goal kick, the two centre halves drop wide to receive but Frankie waits until the opposition are back in position before he kicks it out.

Maybe he is just very polite and sporting.

Perhaps we should be looking at our goalkeeping coaching staff, surely what is so obvious to the masses must be noticed by them. In saying that I think Frankie has much to offer, just needs the finishing touch.

Man City's recent signing Moraes was described as comfortable on the ball and having the ability to break open a defence with a singular ball ...

Talking about distribution did anyone see Pickford last night in Europa league

He was one touch passing to wide players and landing it  on a sixpence. His shot stopping not too shabby either.

Looking a good prospect for England even with Butland Forster and I suppose Hart in the frame.

Got to admit to @redcherryberry that I previously stated that I thought Pickford was poor with his feet....whilst at Bradford, who in fairness had a sh1t pitch.  Happy to have been wrong!

Cant get them all right Dave :P.

In fact I was only chatting to our mutual friend recently saying I'm surprised he hasn't tapped you up for scouting games..............do enjoy your analysis of players, Marley Watkins & Pickford's distribution aside .

This, I dont get the constant bashing of his distribution, he's not Neuer. Also keepers are told to kick to the wings now to stop the ball coming straight back if one in the centre (more likely to go out for throws or keep possession)  its fine margins.

none of the eleven are being compared to world class! how are City going to improve and progress without a Keeper who is good at distribution?

Much of the development of goalkeepers is now integrated with the squad. Keepers now need to be multi disciplined to deal with technical demands created by the back pass rule, and differing tactics.

Pickfords passing skills are no coincidence. The back pass rule changed twenty years or so ago. Pickford is 23. England started to move away from 4-4-2 twenty years ago. English coaching now focuses more on the relevant skills for possession based football and Keepers becoming part of offensive strategy v lamping it. Its illogical to have a specialist position focusing on only 30% (the hands) of their game.

English football is playing catch up, but this type of more flexible and rounded keeper will become the norm.

Cos he kept us in it early doors. (And people are so quick to say we need to change keeper)

So is it a point for Patterson as well for scoring the goal in a 1-1 draw and minus a point for Pack for deflecting the shot that went in?

Win as a team, lose as a team (draw as a team)

Ideally it would be, wouldn't it? But I love Frankie more than most of the others.

Fair enough.

I dont have a particular downer on Frankie.

As I said at the start of the thread I do think we could upgrade, but this season he has been in his best form since SOD signed him.

I'd also add that upgrading him isnt the highest priority right now.

Another good performance from Frankie tonight, long may it continue.

Almost entirely agree but if he is crocked do we have a first team ready replacement (let alone an upgrade)?

Love Frankie, he just gets on with it. He looks as mad as a box of frogs also - which is the sign of a great keeper. Just wish he was a bit taller, and got the ball going a bit quicker - but then again I also wish for my mrs to be Mila Kunis... Happy for Frankie to be our number 1, but like others have said - if an upgrade is available we do need to progress.
