The football economy is completely different to any other economic model.  Where else in the entertainment business are unsold tickets not allowed for sale on the day of the performance?  I am off to the cinema tomorrow and haven't booked tickets yet .... imagine the derision that would result if Odeon had a sign 'No tickets for sale on the day of the performance'.  And pyro and smoke is a red herring because those supporters who have bought tickets could be the pyromaniacs.  And before somebody suggests it is all to do with staffing the stewards .... it isn't exactly the case that thousands of fans would walk up ticket-less.  The football model is mad!!  In Division 1 and 2, matches are played in virtually empty grounds looking at the FL Show.  Given supply hugely exceeds demand, the solution is to cut prices ... it is a no brainer.  Only one club has done this, Bradford City, with the result that the Bantams have close on 18,000 season ticket holders.  Bristol Rugby could learn from this given their extortionate prices in a league where most clubs charge £15.

Post of the month
