Being bored out of my brain I decided to flick through the channels & got to BBC ALBA, they have Greenock Morton Vs St. Mirren on but I can’t understand a word of what the commentators are saying!

At first I just thought it was Scottish being spoke very fast & was similar as to why I couldn’t understand Kenny Dalglish when he would give interviews but this is even worse than trying to understand Dalglish & is on a par with Welsh.

Now having never been to Scotland, do they have their road signs in this weird language like the Welsh do?

On the plus side, I think there is a lad playing who’s been linked to us, Lewis Morgan, the game kicked off at 3pm for anyone else as bored as me.

Anyone would think it was mixture of Celtic and Viking dialects

So am I right, Welsh & Swedish chef from The Muppets?

And while I can’t understand a word of what’s being said, do they not have their own written language? Everything across the bottom of the screen is in ENGLISH......

As for the game, Lewis Morgan has just scored, Celtic trying to stockpile Scottish ‘talent’?

Yeah. You are very close indeed.

As for the English part, there are less than 10,000 speakers, 99% of whom, if not all, can speak and read English. To even have a channel for so few people is a lot of money, that probably does not stretch to having all the writing replaced as well.

Compared that to BBC Cymru (in Welsh) which is aimed at the 600,000 or so Welsh speakers so they can do it all in Welsh.

As for the road signs, there are a few but you have to go up to the highlands to find them.

It's BBC Alba, the Scots Gaelic channel.

It has broadcast rights for every Scottish league game (ie: below SPL level).

Obviously the Beeb feels it's OK to fork out for broadcast rights for the 57,000 people who speak this language, but the rest of us can go screw ourselves if we want to watch live football from our league.

I like the fact that the UK has so many languages and culturally I think they are an important link to our history, be we Celts, Romans, Angles, Saxons, Vikings, Normans or whoever else has invaded this island. If very low quality  and cheap to broadcast Scottish football will get more kids to speak it and preserve it then that is a good thing in my book.

With regards Wales, a lot of people in the UK moan how it's a waste of money translating everything twice as nobody speaks the lingo and the money could be better spent on an ailing NHS or failing Welsh school system.

That said, despite being English, I do have a deep seated respect for this notion of keeping traditions alive. The patriotism and desire by some to keep an ancient and cultural language going (when really, it is quite useless in the modern day) speaks volumes about the passion some folk have for their country, despite years of conquest.

I do wish we were a bit more patriotic this side of the bridge at times, but in reality, we seem content to be dictated to with regards a lot of things.

I think the problem with England is that the Welsh, Scots and Irish can trace their traditions back thousands of years. I believe this is because these counties have been conquered very few times, and when they have been conquered, mostly by the Romans or us English, the inhospitable terrain made cultural changes very difficult.

England on the other hand has seen many foreign invasions. Foreign leaders from Ceaser (Claudius?) to William the Conqueror and William of Orange would have, to an extent, wanted to culturally change the country to be more like their culture. This would make maintaining power easier. Due to England's relatively flat and open landscape, cultural traditions were easier to get rid of. This process would get easier with each invasion, with less traditions to remove or suppress.

I feel that is the main reason why there are no ancient languages or traditions in England (like a national dress) which our Celtic friends on these Isles.

Reminds me of one of the more bizarre experiences of watching a City game. It was the Cardiff home game in the FA Cup, when I think (without checking) that Gavin Williams scored a late equaliser for us, about 7 years ago.

I was working in Germany that week and the only online stream I couldn find had commentary in Welsh (from memory, the game was on S4C). With heavy snow at Ashton Gate and commentary in a language I don’t speak, it felt like watching an Eastern European game at times.
