No substitute. A record I didn’t know we held.

In today’s Times there is a snippet (page 15 The Game) about not using substitutes. I had not realised that City hold the record for the most league games in a row without fielding a substitute. A remarkable 53 games from February 1966!

That's right, well before Warnock's time wasting tactics. Always a dilemma for managers in those days when reserve team football was quite competitive. Whether to have a player on the bench or give him decent match practice. The Football Combination (reserves league) as I think it was called was quite well thought of and I used to go sometimes when City were away.

Back then only one substitute on the bench so there would have to be a fair amount of shuffling if anyone had to go off. No specialist strikers or defenders on the bench then - utility players were at much more of a premium than they are now. One of the outfield players would even be nominated as reserve goalkeeper should the need arise.

Before subs came in, have even seen an injured goalkeeper taken out of goal to limp up an down the wing while one of his outfield colleagues replaced him in goal.

Might be my faulty memory but seemed to be far less injuries in those happy days before metatarsals were invented.

Correct. It became clear that it was impossible to "police" this so subs became tactical.

The other thing to bear in mind is that Fred Ford, a former RSM I believe, was a ruthless disciplinarian and a fitness fanatic who drilled the players until they were as tough as teak.  Plus of course we had Les Bardsley and his magic sponge.

My memories of the first use of subsitutes was George Showell

Came on for THIRTY SECONDS towards the end of the game and never touched the ball, possible against Wrexham

As regards to changing from injured players to tacticall changes

I think it might have been Tommy Docherty(although I could be wrong)

Could have been QPR or chelsea who made a sunstitute for a tacticall reason.

Then the football league found out about the  substitution

Refs said we ain't doctors

So they made the decision subs could be for any reason

I used to play for RMC Wick FC and we were playing St Phillips on a Saturday in the B&D league division 6 or something, I was in goal, we had no subs, I saved a shot and broke my finger when about 3-0 down, I went outfield and somebody else went in goal, we lost 10-0 which made me feel a bit better!

What? I would have thought you would have scored a hat trick. No doubt you were dropped the following week....haha:clapping:

Softie, I played in goal through a broken finger on a few occasions with my fingers taped together under my gloves. Was like a four fingered goalie ;)

Well Bert Trautmann played in goal with a broken neck. Broken finger? What a wuss.

I agree about it being George Showell. My memory is that he replaced John Atyeo at half time.

Atyeo went to see the ref during the interval and said he couldn't continue (Big John, not the ref!). Showell emerged wearing number 12, to a chorus of boos. Not sure if the opposition fans thought we were cheating by replacing our greatest ever player with a reserve centre half?

Yeh but Bert Trautmann didn’t play in Bristol & District Division 6!

I played in the lower end of the B&D myself. When I first arrived in Bristol in the early 70s I fancied myself as the elegant midfield general type. Unfortunately when I took my silky skills into the first league match they kicked seven types of cr4p out of me. Welcome to Bristol! (Still here 45 years on so must like it).

So a bit like a gas head then.
