Fans travelling to Russia for the World Cup

Recommended Posts

Hi,

I'm from ITV West Country and we're looking to do a piece on people's travel plans for the Russia World Cup, potentially interviewing people before they travel and when out in Russia.

Do Bristol City have a delegation of fans going over? It'd be great to chat with anyone who is interested

I'll be there, arrive Volvograd on 16th June on one way ticket, will see all England's matches and won't  buy a return ticket home till they're knocked out. Sounds mad now I've written it ! But been following City since 1964 (aged 7) so seen it all and nothing surprises me........

If I had a death wish I’d be more than happy to go, but I don’t, need your head read if your going over there.

Care to comment on the man on top of the tent Stick?!

If ever a idea backfired it was those beer tents........

ido remember the guy on the tent and it all going tits up that night in Malmö  And the shear vandalism that took place after the police steeped in.being in my early 20;s it all seemed like good fun and made up for the shit football

looking back years later the country had made a effort to make us welcome and most fans just took the piss ( but that was how it was back then) beautiful country but bloody expensive,...

due to the cost of most things not to disappointed when we got knocked out but after doing so well at Italia 90 it was a let down

still have the front page picture from the sun leading up to with Taylor holding a George cross saying sit back and watch England win the tournament

Russian corruption cost Bristol City FC the 40,000 seater Ashton Vale stadium and England the 2018 World Cup.

If you go there you let your club and country down.

44,000 Ashton Vale stadium would've been horrendous. I'm quite glad we didn't get it, huge number of other clubs were going to drastically expand their stadiums if we did win the bid, including Plymouth expanding Home Park to 46,000...

Good for a couple of World Cup games but when club football returned it would've been a mess.

I remember your world class summary of the tent bouncing situation that appeared on the BBC hooligan documentary that came out after the tournament!

I've still got a newspaper cutting from England v Germany in Charleroi in 2000 with a picture of you and I singing in the ground under the headline 'Italians tell loved ones to stay away' haha.

Yes bob it was Malmö we’re you there?

Yes mate - at the marquee - after being in the fountain for a bit

What a crazy crazy night - probably the craziest in all my trips with England

if you ever know the bloke who climbed the marquee , which kicked off the mayhem give him a slap !!!(Joking) .......

If you recall busloads of local Swedish girls had headed for the square to drink with the ‘fun’  English lads for some bizarre reason and I’d just pulled the most stunning Swedish girl , to say  punching above my weight wouldn’t even touch it - Thought I’d won life’s lottery

As the square exploded we suddenly found a police dog snarling at our arses got separated in the mayhem never to be reunited

:sad26:

As I dodged the riot police storming the square I always remember two lads next to me made straight for a ITV cameraman , grabbed his large tv camera and promptly threw it through the nearest shop window !!

Think at that point , pissed or not , realised it was time to get out of there !!!

I remember with about 20 other England fans we basically hijacked a bus to get us back to the campsite :fear:

Where there was running battles with riot police until 5 in the morning !!

Nuts , totally nuts

The night of our game with Sweden in Stockholm came close

Crazy that Sweden of all places was the setting for some of my dodgiest England experiences

Malmo was lovely and as you say made us welcome and it was awful that that all went pear shaped in one evening

The lad who climbed the marquee was only pissed and having a laugh and I could never understand why the Swedish Police panicked and came steaming in with batons and riot shields

It literally kicked off in moments right alongside me and was totally avoidable

Stockholm was a war zone with Swedish Gangs well organised looking to take on England fans

Some Wolves lads I went with brought their younger 18 yr old brother , first time abroad

He went into Stockholm the night before the game with some lads and we were woken at 4 in the morning I n our tent with a gun to my head !!!!!

They promptly carted off younger brother who got 18 months (for tipping some tables over apparently)  !!!

Crazy time to follow England

You have jogged my memory on a few things mate .also I noticed a lot of the riot police were not very old and you only had to say boo and they jumped, loads of story’s to tell from that tournament but being a public chat site won’t go into detail ( and it was 26 years ago) I remembered slipping the police escort after the game in Stockholm with a lad from Burnley and then getting the run around in the city centre until the rest came. Did you stay on the camp site that they did a police ring around, and pictured and took passport details from everyone staying there?. Went with a group of Preston fans (one that had his ass bit) good lads but well game...following England these days is nowhere as good as it was.. happy days.

@Bob Bob Super Bob

Yeh, I was there,  went to a lot of England games in the 80s/early 90s.

Sweden away and Italy World Cup were the two most dangerous places I have been to watch England. Sweden had a big skinhead culture in those days (The Black Army if I recall right). Only time I have seen a flash of steel at a football match - it was a highly dangerous place if you did not “fancy it”. The Swedish were not afraid to use the blades neither - several were stabbed. In Italy, the spiks used to ride up behind you on mopeds and stab you up the ass - then sped off - cowards!

BUT as BBSB states, England were all stuck together in Sweden (BCFC, Millwall, West Ham, Wolves, Chelsea, as one that night in Sweden). It was a crazy night as the park we were all camped in came under attack from god knows how many Swedish Black Army. The BCFC guys I was with (none of us had tickets) ended buying them of a tout and going in the Swedish end. Luckily we got moved.

But in those days, England were the number 1 firm and every foreign hooligan would turn out to try there luck against England. It came with the territory and reputation England had in those days. No CCTV, mobile phones etc, so you could have fun - but I am not going to mention anything on here due to the OB watching it.

From memory, Sweden beat England and when we came out the ground, I remember seeing 100s of England fans outside waiting for the Swedes (who by now were all split up). England were all mobbed up, and there were a couple hundred hardcore  scouser there on a thieving trip, who were going at it with the locals and OB. There was only one winner - England. It was chaos.

But the Swedes came looking for England fans later in the park - we were up all night in case they got in. The whole park was circled by the OB. It was a big park. To be honest, we could have come seriously unstuck that night if it was’nt for the OB.

England/Bristol City away in the 80s was an experience I will never forget and could easily write a book on the events. Probably the best football days I experienced. Yes, it was dangerous, but the buzz you got from “flying with the crows”. Well no one will understand, if they have not experienced it.

Remember a Holland game at Wembley @Bob Bob Super Bob

When literally every firm from England turned out - including a big mob of City. Big row with another English side that night. Great memories. Some good stories to be told on here one day. @Bob Bob Super Bob has some good ones to tell!!

@weepywall was there with me in Sweden and Italy also I think? He might confirm? Bristol City had a big following in those days at England games. Most of it cannot be published on here though.

1988 just prior to Euros in Germany

Dutch had been bragging that they were coming over to show the English some

I remember how we got into Wembley that night !!!!!

:laughcont:

That was the game where RMs missus was in Labour when we left to go up , and he got home 36hrs later !!

Jeez those were such great days following City & England

So many good people , characters , camaraderie,   and memories

from Aldershot to Turin !!!

You should tell some of the “legal” stories on here BBSB as RMs missus in labour whilst he goes to football is a cracker. RM was a legend - and should be dead!

Aldershot and the squaddies in the boozer - Freight Rover semi!

Remember meeting the England fan In Italy who hitched a lift all the way to the World Cup FOC. He literally spent something like £20 the whole tournament by hitching and thieving. Now that is how you do football in the 80s!
