Merrick's Marvels
To be exact, Shirehampton's finestwith all due respect to Mickey Tanner and Johnny Watkins. Roy is a classic example - perhaps the classic example - of how Bristol is capable of producing quality footballers who have to go elsewhere to find fame and fortune for no other reason than neither City nor Rovers can get their act together. Roy showed immense promise playing for City in the early '40s but we made the mistake of cashing in early when Newcastle came calling. He was good enough to play for and captain the champion team of England in 1955 and good enough to play for England at a World Cup - a fine Bristolian indeed. Rest in peace. Dr Balls
Thete will surely be some recognition tomorrow, given that Chelski are playing an FA cup semi-final, and Roy is revered by their fans as the captain of their only League winning team, prior to Abrahamovic, Mourinho & the Premier League. Not that there will be necessarily any mention of him being a boy from "The Shire". RIP.
