WRERE
Formations aren't as simple as 442 / 4232 etc, there's much more to it with the fluidity of movement beteeen players and positions. Barcelona have been using a 442 this season and are unbeaten and setting records in La Liga. Atletico Madrid have been using it for a while and won La Liga and got to champions league cup finals. You can't just write off a shape because other teams don't use it. 3 at the back wasn't too popular in English football till Conte used it at Chelsea and now Arsenal, Spurs and many teams have lined up that way
Robbored
4-4-2 is fundamental framework that works effectively enough in isolation but is easily adapted into any other formation. Move one position and you have a 3-5-2 or a 4-3-3. Im pretty sure that professional teams practice changing formations in training so it becomes second nature if required during a match. Wouldn't even class it as a 4-4-2 myself- Messi is no orthodox striker. You play a 'front' three of Messi, Coutinho, Suarez say? At minimum it's 4-3-2-1. Before we even consider the prospect that Suarez can be used as a false nine. (He can and he has played it). If it's Dembele, Coutinho, Messi? Could even class it as a strikerless formation- a 4-3-3-0 when Messi comes off the front. The latter being your standard 4-3-3...back 4, 3 midfielders...then Dembele and Coutinho pushed high and wide, Messi in a withdrawn role, between the midfield and the wingers pushed high- who the hell do the centre backs mark then?
