However, this tournament also makes me realise that VAR gives the "authorities" the ability to manipulate decisions for or against teams, if they choose, from behind a screen of anonymity. It also enables referees to "miss' offences knowing that embarrassment will be avoided if VAR fails to correct their decision - how can the ref be wrong if the VAR panel saw nothing different? Was VAR going to give a holding penalty against the host country tonight and potentially allow Egypt back into the game? Were they going to "reward" England - a country not well liked by FIFA in general and by the host nation in particular in view of recent events? Far from being an aide to better decision making, there is a real danger that it will make fans even more sceptical about the way games are refereed and decisions made.
