Poor refereeing in the box, when players are being blatantly manhandled, is in danger of spoiling the competition, not to say making many of us sceptical about VAR

It`s all so obvious, they`re not even being sneaky about it. As you say, for those of us who are broadly anti - VAR (of which I`m one) this sort of thing is really not going to win me over.

They’ve played against some top teams to be fair.

Poland only had Japan to overcome . Germany had Mexico, Argentina had Iceland , Brazil had Switzerland. Not a single one of them won let alone look like scoring 8 in their first two games ! Russia look good !

The Ruskies haven't met decent opposition yet.

Along with Belgium they are the only ones to have smashed the sides they should have done. Everyone else has struggled.

Ive long thought that the use of technology was a must, in order to address wrong decisions and the fact that referees have their hands full with the pace of the modern age and players  becoming better and better at deception and cheating.

However, this tournament also makes me realise that VAR gives the "authorities" the ability to manipulate decisions for or against teams, if they choose,  from behind a screen of anonymity. It also enables referees to "miss' offences knowing that embarrassment will be avoided if VAR fails to correct their decision - how can the ref be wrong if the VAR panel saw nothing different?

Was VAR going to give a holding penalty against the host country tonight and potentially allow Egypt back into the game? Were they going to "reward" England - a country not well liked by FIFA  in general and by the host nation in particular in view of recent events?

Far from being an aide to better decision making, there is a real danger that it will make fans even more sceptical about the way games are refereed and decisions made.

Same bugger attacked an Egyptian striker in the penalty area tonight, but luckily the Russian defender pulled him away from the Dino's jaws!

Can't listen to this commentary........sounds like being talked at by Theresa May !:grr:

They obviously know it’s bad , as they offer the option of radio 5 commentary on the red button. Lose HD but it’s worth it.
