Ronaldo carries an average Portugal team and performs when it really counts.

Messi in a team of top players looks a shadow of himself.

Ronaldo would struggle in that team. They are dreadful.

Whenever you meet South Americans at tournaments, they have a tendency to tell you how brilliant all their teams are, and how impossibly difficult their qualification is (although if it was that difficult, perhaps every once in a while Brazil or Argentina would fail to qualify).

So far, their record in Russia:

Peru - lost 2 from 2 without scoring (and they were many people’s tip as a dark horse to reach the semi finals).

Colombia - lost to Japan.

Argentina - lost to Croatia, drew against Iceland.

Brazil - drew against Switzerland.

The only one to win so far is Uruguay, and they didn’t exactly look convincing against Egypt or Saudi Arabia.

This post may look foolish in a couple of weeks if it ends up as an all South American final, but so far they’ve hardly covered themselves in glory.

To be honest, all of Portugals midfield would get in this Argentina team, take out their attacking option s and they are a really poor side

So if Iceland beat a poor Nigeria tomorrow does that mean Mags is in the last sixteen?

They need 4 points but if they win 2-3 nill then Argies are going to need to win 5-6 nill..

Iceland would be on 4pts with a + goal difference.

Argentina (-3) would have to win and overturn the GD.

If Nigeria beat Iceland, then Argentina still have a very real chance of qualifying. They'd just need to beat Nigeria and depend on Iceland not beating Croatia.

Think they still need 4 pts to be guaranteed.

Yeah, the Argies were a shadow of their former selves.

No midfield bite or creativity and Messi was lone figure.

Felt a bit for  Zabaletta on the BBC. He looked devastated..........:sad26:

Does this World Cup end the Messi v Ronaldo debate?

You have to remember Messi won player of the tournament last time and prior to last week Ronaldo had yet to turn up at a world cup.

Should Ronaldo win it with this Portugal team akin to Maradona in 86 and pick up the golden boot as well, then in my eyes he has to go down as the better player when they hang their boots up.

Looking at it now. Whoever had the better midfield for their club was best.

Early it was xavi and iniesta being dominant with Messi winning the ballon d'or.

Now, modric and kroos dominate for real Madrid and Ronaldo is on top (in the champions league anyway) with his recent ballon d'or wins.

Ronnie curls in one superb free kick after missing with his 44 previous attempts for Portugal and that proves beyond doubt that he's the best player that ever lived.

Without a doubt a fantastic top two or three of his generation , but this greatest ever thing well no way you can compare with greats of the past.
