England vs Colombia : Official Matchday Thread

Slight change of subject - on the Stadium board someone's asked the question if - should we get so far - the club can show the semis / final inside the ground on big screens.

For the sake of city-wide interest and club revenue I suggest you all upvote that like a mf'er.

About fifteen  years ago I was travelling alone in South America, in a town called Barriloche in Argentina I met a group of Columbians .

We spent a bit of time together and before we split I indicated a desire to visit them in Colombia.

Their reply was unanimous " Don't it's far too dangerous ".

I was quite shocked, most people say things like " oh , the violence is a bit exaggerated", or " if you avoid certain areas it's ok " but this was categoric.

So , who'd want to be a Colombian trainer or footballer ?

I'm reminded of the murder of Escobar because he scored an own goal and we think the Press give our lads a hard time .

I went to Colombia in 2011 (Medellin, Cartagena and Bogota). Overall I felt it was absolutely fine. Clearly there are parts of all three cities that it would be very unwise to visit, but I’d thoroughly recommend Colombia to anyone who hasn’t been before. Their national tourist board’s slogan sums it up for me: ‘the only risk is wanting to stay’.

He’s got to go and face the fans at home, where they go after you with guns. WE know it’s not the truth he speaks but I expect if he spouts it enough he is hoping it will be taken as fact and may save his neck, quite literally.

Excellent point RedM - one I hadn't considered.

Good thinking from @Alex#40.

I've added my voted in favour.

I'd call it unethical rather than downright cheating.

Faking injury is impossible for the ref to know if its genuine or not. Diving is different as refs are clued up to it and if detected yellow cards are issued. Same with kicking the ball away.

Time wasting is also something refs are aware of but Colin's teams are usually not blatant  with it, more subtle by feigning injury.

Its ugly to watch especially when your team are on the end of it.

It is cheating - Its against the rules.

Your point about timewasting. Ball rolling time or effective playing time as it is also known is significantly lower under particular Managers. One of those Managers is Neil Warnock a cause is timewasting. Some teams can see average EPT as being 58 minutes … Neil Warnock has Managed teams cutting games down to 45 minutes -- That goes beyond blatant its exceptional.

Just reading there manager wasn’t happy with our constant play acting.

If ever you needed a definition of pots calling kettles back, then this is it.

Few points :

Nothing will change as regards cheating, diving, time-wasting etc. in football until the referee is awarded the total respect given in other sports (eg. American Football and Rugby)and that is down to the guttless FAs (especially ours) all over the World. At the moment they are frightened of the Neymar, Maradonna, Henri cartel of primadonnas and cheats and therefore all the footballers of lesser ability feel justified in going as far as they can viz. those vile creeps from Colombia. (eg. 3 minutes of pathetic hounding of the referee when our penalty was awarded) Anybody who gets in the face of the ref after a decision should be sent off

As well as being pleased that those vile, slimy, cheating, lying, penalty spot-defiling scoundrels of "footballers" from Colombia are on a plane, spare a thought for their splendid sporting fans, a credit to the tournament for their appreciation of the opposition and their tuneful whistling

I thought he was a typically dreadful F.A. cop out appointment, with no chance of bringing success.

This morning I eat my words.

I now think he's a great man, a wonderful choice and he's already brought the pride back to supporting England whether we go on to win a major trophy under him or not.

Keep going Gareth, you're doing a brilliant job and the nation is 100% behind you and this great set of lads.

:chant6ez:COME ON ENGLAND :chant6ez: :englandsmile4wf:

Exactly the same. I thought he was a terrible unambitious appointment with England being resigned to several years being in a wilderness of transition.

Funnily enough I thought we'd actually do ok under Allardyce!

Was wrong. Southgate is great and has really surprised me.

I really like this England team and really like him as manager.

Samara easy to get to? Likely to be more fans going out?

Fair play to you and the other fans we could certainly hear you last night.

Samara isn't easy to get to! It's a 15 hour train journey from Moscow, or an expensive internal flight.

I know the FA have received a few extra tickets today, and they are allocating them to members on the waiting list who've got over a certain number of caps - so there will be a few extra fans coming out, but not hordes.

There is quite a bit of maintenance work going on within the stadium at the moment to get it ready for the new season so I don't think that will be possible.  The stadium team at Ashton Gate are looking at all possible options right now for all remaining matches. All announcements will be made on the website so keep an eye out.

Colin's team aren't cheating bastards.

He gets them to break up the flow of the game by encouraging his players to go down, waste time by exaggerating the slightest knock and it works most of the time. Very difficult to play against.

Fans know it, other teams know it and the referees know it but it falls within the rules and although frustrating there is bugger all anyone can do about it.

Words, words, words. They don't play the game and that is cheating

Colin would have a great finish to his career in Colombia.

This game reminds me (and yes I did watch it, I am that old)  England v Argentina 1966 world cup the cheating and intimidation is off the scale.

Wow.

I watched the game and remember it well: Antonio Rattin is a name that will never be forgotten, nor will his antics, and I have just checked on WIKI - apparently he is still alive, aged 81.

I remember watching the game on a small black and white TV and asking my father what exactly was happening when AR was sent off - there was an awful scene and he took an age to leave the field. I can't remember whether I actually witnessed it at the time (probably not), but I have seen articles since where the Argentinian players were shown to be 'comforting' their English adverseries after a foul by patting their heads and, supposedly, helping them up, only for it to be shown in close up that they were actually pulling their hair!

Here is a brief résumé of the incident that led the late Sir Alf Ramsey to refer to the Argentine team as 'Animals' - quite a scandal back in the day.

'It was in the quarter-final match against the host team that Rattín was sent off by the German referee Rudolf Kreitlein for "violence of the tongue", despite the referee speaking no Spanish. Rattín was so incensed with the decision, believing the referee to be biased in favour of England, that he initially refused to leave. As a way to show his disgust, he sat on the red carpet which was exclusively for the Queen to walk on. He eventually had to be escorted from the field by two policemen and as a final sign of disgust he wrinkled a British pennant before he was escorted out. This incident, and others surrounding the same game, arguably started the long-lasting rivalry between both national teams - but, on the other hand, allowed for the institution of yellow and red cards into the football practice, a solution devised by FIFA after the spark that set off the incident.'

Back then a sending off was quite rare so a big thing.

These days red cards are two a penny, apart from this world cup it seems!

The club should open the south stand concourse like they did in 2016. Wouldn’t even need to get a big screen in there again, could just watch it on all the smaller ones.
