Niki Mäenpää - Now Officially Signed (Merged)

Not beyond the bounds of possibility that we see this guy as an experienced alternative/cover to a new signing if Fielding still goes to Blackburn.

Other possibility is we have already looked at him and said “no” (as I think is the case with Kean).

Truth in this one, he's out in Marbella with the squad this week. No idea if he'll be offered a contract or not but he must've looked okay in training last week to be taken out for further inspection.

Source?

Ok it's only one mistake, but oh dear

It is only one mistake.

He has 9 years of experience in top division Dutch football playing over 100 times for one team.

I think you could selectively find an error from every keeper who has ever played.

Personally I’d rather we brought him in than Krul whose career has completely fallen away over the last few years.

Exactly. I doubt we`d refuse to sign Hugo Lloris just because of his cock up in the WC final.

I noticed on the first days training in marbella that there was a tall short haired keeper being warmed up by the gk coach in the background and presumed it was him.

Is this a round about way of describing him as being only 6' in height?

Maenpaa has played one game in the last three years, yet you think it’s Krul whose career has ‘completely fallen away’?!

Krul featured in the World Cup quarter final in 2014, yet within two seasons he had lost his place at Newcastle, he then did so badly during a seasons loan at AZ Alkmaar that they tried to send him back, that is some fall from grace. Since then he (& Mäenpää) have both sat on the subs bench at Brighton.

In contrast Mäenpää has pretty much accepted he is a back up keeper, but he has played in every Cup game for Brighton & got a glowing reference from Hughton when he chose to leave this summer.

I’m not convinced that he is definitely good enough to be our long term no.1 but am sure he is good enough to be one of two senior keepers that we have.

I still wouldn’t rule out Fielding still leaving for Blackburn & if he does a new first choice with this bloke as experienced cover (the same job as Steele did) seems fine to me.

To be honest, that's exactly why I hope we aren't looking at Lloris.  If Lloris has done his research on us, he should know that being 4-1 up with 30 minutes to go, is not a time to switch off....

Johnson said in interview we are looking at bringing in a couple of goalkeepers. So I expect this guy might be brought in as an emergency 3rd choice which would allow O'Leary and Wollacot to be loaned out.

If we bring in two ‘ proper ‘ keepers then Fielding is off , no way we will carry three experienced keepers

Absolutely not true...just looking at last season...

19 Sept 2017 - EFL Cup - Cherries 1 Brighton 0 - Krul in goal for Brighton

8 January 2018 - FA Cup - Brighton 2 Eagles 1 - Krul in goal for Brighton

27 January 2018 - FA Cup - Boro 0 Brighton 1 - Krul in goal for Brighton

17 February 2018 - FA Cup - Brighton 3 Coventry 1 - Krul in goal for Brighton

17 March 2018 - FA Cup - Man Utd 2 Brighton 0 - Krul in goal for Brighton

So, Maenpaa hasn’t played ‘in every Cup game for Brighton’ - you’ve had a ‘mare there mate....
