Sky prediction City to finish 7th

Can't see us finishing that high tbh. 10th, 12th maybe.

Certainly can't see Preston in playoffs. Near them? Sure. Not quite enough to make top 6 IMO. Brentford could well make them, my surprise tip to maybe finish top 6 though is Sheffield United.

Brooks out? Yeah that doesn't help. However Henderson on loan, Egan brought, McGoldrick on a free (he can play as striker or in behind) and quite potentially Ben Woodburn on loan.

Decent side with a nice balance IMO, not Fulham or Wolves football wise but not Cardiff or Millwall either. Definitely ones to watch (as top 6 contenders) I'd say.

The people who knock out these articles do a very limited research with the briefest of considerations when compiling these articles

They are worthless as any real predictor or gauge  IMHO

Fun for those that like them but I never bother even looking at them tbh

The prediction on the Sky website is done by 2 Oxford fans who do a weekly podcast covering the 72 teams outside the Premier League.

They did research on all the teams and the podcast covering the Championship predictions alone was over an hour long where they gave their reasoning.

The Sky article is one you or I could have put out in 10 minutes after listening to the podcast, that just touches on a few things they said.

Of course they could be totally wrong, and I don't think we'll finish as high as they do, but (in this case) it's been researched a bit for sure.

They got Cardiff to get in the top six last season, called the top two bang on the season before and had Huddersfield to finish in the play-offs - not a bad record for limited research huh ;)

The Sky table shows City finishing above Leeds, Aston Villa, Sheffield Utd, West Brom, Swansea.  I’d take that at the start of the season.

It’s quite healthy to see a prediction table not purely based on size of club or who the media darlings are.

Not to say they’ve got in right, but it’s a bit boring when you see the top 3 as Stoke, West Brom and Villa everywhere else.

Preston have lost Maguire for 3 months apparently, that will hurt.

We're in a bit of a pickle now unfortunately in the market. After a strong pre-season we only needed to add a couple (target man to replace Hugill and RB Callum Connolly from Everton) and we looked set.

Then last week Maguire, who's hamstrings are terrible and can't feel bad injuries in them, had a scan which revealed a tendon problem in the hamstrings which will keep him out for 8-12 weeks.

On the same day, Bodin, who was outstanding in pre-season, planted his foot into the ground in training with nobody around him, twisted his leg with his foot stuck in the turf and did his ACL. Up to 6 months out.

It all looks a bit chaotic now in terms of getting people in. We've moved on from Cameron Jerome and Kieffer Moore in the chase for a target man due to the deals being too expensive, so now looks like we're probably going to sign Colin Quaner from Huddersfield. Missed out on Kasey Palmer on loan. Need a fast striker to replace Maguire, at least on loan, and a tricky winger preferably left-footed to replace Bodin. Also still waiting on Everton, who IMO probably hold onto young players for too long, regarding Callum Connolly.

We do have money after selling Hugill and Cunningham in the past 6 months but it's going to be expensive probably. Wouldn't surprise me if we cash in on Daniel Johnson to have another cash boost, given that he won't sign a new deal.

We were all confident before this week but now I'll probably wait and see how we do in the market before the deadline before being confident again or predicting anything, because Moult probably isn't up to leading the line week in week out at Championship level so we've simply got to strengthen at the top end of the pitch.

@pnefcok in Maguires case, is he a player who got by in Ireland because the physical demands were lesser.  But now in the Champ, to play game on game he needs to be fitter / stronger, and in doing so is breaking down regularly?  Bit like a finely tuned racing car....can run at 90% no probs, but to run at full-tilt introduces risks of breakdown?

He goes from standing to sprinting extremely quickly and I wonder if it just takes its toll on the hamstrings. As I said it seems he cannot feel bad hamstring injuries. Neil said he actually played against Brentford last season with a torn hamstring, which they didn't know about, and he scored a great solo goal as well, it's ridiculous really.

Does he go to the same guy as Glenn Hoddle?

I think they've got it broadly right but I don't understand how they can be so sure that the rookie manager Lampard will be such a success but Moore, who nearly achieved a miracle with West Brom last season, and Potter, who has done well abroad, will not.

Simple, Lampard is more famous. For some people that is the only measure of value.

I hopped back in time to refresh my memory on some of the pre season predictions. Fun reading, so I thought I’d bump it.

Interesting that they predicted 7th for us, which is looking close ftb. Some others are close too, and others wildly wrong (eg Norwich and Brentford, in different ways).

Means nothing of course, except to prove how unpredictable this league is.

Not unthinkable for us to finish 7th when you look at the rest of the division, Stoke seem to be the only relegated team who have sorted themselves out, Leeds I'd think will finish above us, Villa could be a basket case with everything going on. It shows from the outside people think we're doing well despite the loss of Flint/Reid and people view us in better shape than a lot of our own fans do. Brentford is a big call though, they've got potential in that team but third would be an outstanding season for them.

What an idiot thinking Stoke would be a good team this season

Interesting reading. Always look at it now with the benefit of hindsight of course.

I do wonder why they had West Brom so low and Preston so high.

RE Brentford - wonder how they’d be going if Villa hadn't taken Smith? They were doing well before he left and then they’ve lost their way a bit.

Norwich are a surprise this season; I honestly thought they’d be bottom half, as did one of the guys I work with who supports them. The “German Porn Star” as he refers to the gaffer has worked wonders.

Us? Well, I’d have snapped your hand off for 7th pre-season. But now? No chance. Top 2, will be gutted if we do t win it to be honest. ALWAYS BELIEVE

I think they now have reached the stage where they need a full on clearout- lot of decent to good individuals there but for varying reason it hasn't worked.

Rowett, I always had doubts about him- Stoke with a lot of good individuals for this level, would have been expecting and on the part of the players too perhaps to take the game to opposition, to impose themselves...that just isn't a good fit with Rowett's football style of play and it set the tone. Think I remember writing similar on this forum in summer or early season too.
