Did quality of football influence your support?

I'm often away with work and watch a fair few non league games. I was at Oxford City v Torquay last night and really enjoyed it, away support out numbered the home support, drinking on the terraces and a really nice friendly atmosphere. Obviously Rovers had their spell in non league, and I went to a lot of away games, which by and large (Braintree an obvious exception) were of a similar atmosphere to the one I enjoyed last night, I'm glad we aren't down there any more, but I really did- for the most part- enjoy it.

Banter aside, a fair few on this forum have ridiculed the standard of football that Rovers play at and said they couldn't watch it, but is there anyone on here who chose City over Rovers because of the 'quality' of football on offer? I knew a pretty die hard red a few years back, who was home and away with City and when I asked him about the - ahem- glory years of 1982 I was really surprised when he told me he didn't watch them then as he wouldn't watch 4th division football.

So come on then, which of you ******* are glory seekers who chose City because of the level of football they played at when you could have followed us with our superior support and free half time porn?

(I haven't been able to find a game to watch tonight so my posts have been fuelled by a £3.69 bottle of Lidl wine and the fact that tmy hotel is on a Basingstoke trading estate with **** all else to do!)

Lots on here started supporting when City were rock bottom, in the basement div, below the roverzzz with not a particularly bright outlook....so you can shove your glory hunting guff....and you should appreciate the fact that you can start (multiple) threads on here when City fans are banned from your forum for daring to have some banter.....utterly pathetic...

Oh mate, where ya staying? I live in Basingstoke

im a huge City fan, but tbh I don’t go up a lot, not local anymore, use to go with mate and his dad, then I found music and by then none of my mates ever supported City, since then worked in retail, now a bookies, so getting off Saturdays is hard, don’t drive and train fares cost a bomb. I now have a little boy, so I have a 3 year plan, once he hits 4/5 I will get us season tickets and drag the poor bugger along with me

Goodness it was grim in the early 80s. I was in Oxford in 1981 - City and Rovers played Oxford United in successive weekends as I recall. I went to both, the latter with a regular poster on that Rovers forum that's not Gaschat. It was a grim time! City were truly awful. But a few years later did I care that the standard of football in the 1-0 down, 2-1 up cup match was poor?...not a bit, I travelled overnight on a ferry from Ireland to watch that game. The standard of football didn't some into it really.

Delighted as I am that City have enjoyed a better decade or two the reasonable bit of me has some sympathy for my Rovers supporting friends...your guys were much better at points in the past!

My family were all Rovers supporters, but I changed to City due to a chance conversion at primary school before I’d watched a live match. It was the best conversation I’ve ever had because, if I hadn’t had it, I would be a Rovers supporter now. Dire as that prospect is I can’t imagine changing allegiance once you become a real supporter. I can’t stand “supporters” who “support” teams like Man U or Chelsea but have never bought a ticket

For me I was brought up in north Bristol in downend so primarily rovers area back in the 80’s...but my dad was always south Bristol till he moved...lydstep terrace. When I first started getting into footy mid 80’s I loved Man U because Bryan robson played for them...flirted with Chelsea and Aston Villa until my dad took me to Wembley on my 9th birthday on 23rd may 1986...hooked ever since.

remember fondly having my Walkman with fm radio from that moment on and listening to radio Bristol and running downstairs to tell my dad when city scored.

I’m a Knowle Wester so had no choice, we didn’t allow gas in KW, some of my best away days were in the 4th division, strange, but I loved it, great memories of Sealand Road, Plainmoor, Northampton’s old cricket ground etc, even now i’d rather watch a conference game on TV than a premiership game, it drives my kids nuts

Stayed on that site loads of times. Went to watch the indoor skydivers a few times and it looks really difficult.

I think last time I was there we went bowling and then for a bit of bingo. Not sure what else is around to do tbh!

In answer to your initial question, City are the nearest club to where I grew up - isn’t that how you’re meant to choose your team (family influence aside maybe?)

Started following City in the 1970s but didn’t go to any games until 1980s because my parents were not into football in the slightest so there was no encouragement.

We didn’t have a TV in our household either until 1983 (no we are not Amish!!) so I had to rely on watching random football at mates houses.

If I based my allegiance around quality than I would have joined the ‘plastics’ years ago and probably followed Man Ure.

I cant help what I am - City is in my blood. Unlike some though, I don’t hate Rovers - I honestly don’t really care about them really - if anything I feel slightly sorry for them, but if forced into a corner I would say that it’s an embarrassment and shame on Bristol that neither of its 2 teams has ventured higher than the Championship since we did in the 1980s.

The only superior support you have, is your Truss, for the giant sized load of bollocks you come out with.?

Was that the Bolton game? I went on the 24th May the following year against Mansfield. Long story . but me and a City mate had agreed if either club got to Wembley we would go and support the others team. I went to the match but I just couldn't cheer on City, I had a great day out and all that, but when Mansfield got the winning penalty it was really hard not to cheer out loud!

Was that you giving the Mansfield fans stick for being scabs after breaking the miners strike?

I’ve seen some dreadful football over the many years I’ve been attending AG  but only once have ever thought about not renewing .

It was after watching the attractive football played by Danny Wilson I was subjected to the most dreary and pedestrian football I’d ever witnessed and after two season of shite I was sorely tempted not to return to AG but I couldn’t do it............

I grew up in a City supporting family who all came from Ashton/Bedminster/Southville.

The "quality of football" arguments I think only apply to those from non-footballing families, exiled neutrals and people from areas without clearly defined "tribal" loyalties.  They will be drawn to whoever is attracting the best quality of opponent. It is a fact that we increased our fanbase considerably in the wider West Country area during the old First division years.
