Did quality of football influence your support?

I was born in the front bedroom of a house less than 0.5 mile from the ground almost 50 years ago. I could hear the cheering. Dad took me and my brother down when we were youngsters. Was never going to be any other team for me.

Almost exactly the same...except I think its about a mile but you could see the floodlights...

Quality of football never came into it - otherwise with some of the crap we’ve had to contend with over the years I would have given up long ago. My dad has always been a staunch City fan so I’ve followed in his footsteps. I can’t imagine not watching City, no matter what league we are in.

I'm often away with work and watch a fair few non league games. I was at Oxford City v Torquay last night and really enjoyed it, away support out numbered the home support, drinking on the terraces and a really nice friendly atmosphere. Obviously Rovers had their spell in non league, and I went to a lot of away games, which by and large (Braintree an obvious exception) were of a similar atmosphere to the one I enjoyed last night, I'm glad we aren't down there any more, but I really did- for the most part- enjoy it.

Banter aside, a fair few on this forum have ridiculed the standard of football that Rovers play at and said they couldn't watch it, but is there anyone on here who chose City over Rovers because of the 'quality' of football on offer? I knew a pretty die hard red a few years back, who was home and away with City and when I asked him about the - ahem- glory years of 1982 I was really surprised when he told me he didn't watch them then as he wouldn't watch 4th division football.

So come on then, which of you ******* are glory seekers who chose City because of the level of football they played at when you could have followed us with our superior support and free half time porn?

(I haven't been able to find a game to watch tonight so my posts have been fuelled by a £3.69 bottle of Lidl wine and the fact that tmy hotel is on a Basingstoke trading estate with **** all else to do!)

For a start if you’re pissed on one bottle of wine you’re a shambles. To answer your question . It was a generation thing , grandad , dad, me. Seen us in all 4 divisions . Proper divisions that is ?

Started following City in the 1970s but didn’t go to any games until 1980s because my parents were not into football in the slightest so there was no encouragement or support for my interest

We didn’t have a TV in our household either until 1983 (no we are not Amish!!) so I had to rely on watching random football at mates houses.

If I based my allegiance around quality than I would have joined the ‘plastics’ years ago and probably followed Man Ure.

I cant help what I am - City is in my blood. Unlike some though, I don’t hate Rovers - I honestly don’t really care about them really - if anything I feel slightly sorry for them, but if forced into a corner I would say that it’s an embarrassment and shame on Bristol that neither of its 2 teams has ventured higher than the Championship since we were last there in the 1980s.

I’m probably quite different to most, and may fall into the glory hunter category, in that I grew up in Gillingham and went for years with my dad for years at Priestfield. Moved to Bristol when I was 18 and been here ever since. When I was about 22 the only place I could afford to buy a house was in novers Park/knowle West, missing live football I started going to AG and not stopped going since then.

First match the 1-6 v Wolves- mascots had a fight and we even scored first!

Half season ticket that year, after a couple of games in between- we battled and there were some periods of hope- but always ultimately doomed that year.

Then my first full season? Pulis in the third tier- so yeah not sure how big a factor quality was tbh...

I follow the City because it is a family thing . My grandparents lived in Hotwells .

God bless 'em.

Luckily the football on offer at BS3 is and has for the most part been streets ahead of that which you have endured.

We all have our own reasons for starting supporting City but after watching lots of our games, mostly with passing football, I do find watching the physical hoofball that is often found in the lower leagues pretty unwatchable.  Exeter v Hull on one Tuesday night in autumn in 1998 sticks in my mind as being particularly poor.

I watched a non-league game on Boxing Day and I liked the relaxed atmosphere and the option to drink a beer on the clubhouse terrace whilst watching the football.  The football though was not attractive and didn't hold my interest at all.

I'm all about the rugby first and foremost but my cousin played for City during the 90s so there was always an interest there. Then the gas stole the Memorial Ground, ran it into the dirt, blamed us for the state of the pitch, charged a fortune in rent, took our bar takings and would happily have seen us go the way of the dodo. From then on O(football)TIB indeed.

Bristol Sport later seeing the potential of the fallen, sleeping giant provided urgent humanitarian aid in a noble cause and united us with a club and fans who don't treat us like crap has sealed the deal forever for a number of folk.

Was that the Bolton game? I went on the 24th May the following year against Mansfield. Long story . but me and a City mate had agreed if either club got to Wembley we would go and support the others team. I went to the match but I just couldn't cheer on City, I had a great day out and all that, but when Mansfield got the winning penalty it was really hard not to cheer out loud!

Yes, I remember cheering really loudly when Mansfield scored a winning goal once.

How ironic..!

I was born in Milan, moved to Paris when I was young, then Madrid and Barcelona then back to Rome and Naples before moving to Downend.

I chose City because I was easily pleased.

P.S. I made up the first paragraph - apart from the Downend bit. :)

My first game (Southampton) I went with a bunch of school mates on the train from Taunton in the early 70s. It was sort of the first time that I`d ever been able to do my own thing with mates and I was hooked from the start. Mum knew absolutely nothing about football and didn`t read the news so had no idea of the atmosphere her twelve year old son was getting into (and I wasn`t about to tell her!).

So no, quality of football didn`t matter, it was just about going with a mob and getting some freedom. I expect if my mates had gone to Exeter instead of City I`d be a committed Grecian now!

Always wondered where along the M5 bcfc becomes ecfc. In my head Taunton is City and Tiverton obvi Exeter. Maybe the border is around Wellington?!

I dunno, Ed. I think I've mentioned I have watched Boreham Wood with the father-in-law and once or twice made an appearance at Street FC. This season I've promised my Torquay supporting mate I'll go to their local derbies if City aren't playing.

I don't expect to be dazzled by silky skills, but the craic is good, it's amazingly friendly - like being in some sort of minority interest society - you meet your neighbours, and, as you say, you can get a cheap pint. :drunk2:

Oh and cloggers they may be by some standards - but they are ALL better players than I ever was. Fair play to them!

Strictly speaking Exeter is closer to Taunton than Bristol by about eight miles and Torquay is actually marginally closer too. The closest club though is Yeovil but back then they were non-league so it was never really a serious option. I think you`re probably right though, the border is the cut off point I think.

No, I support City because it’s who I was taken to watch when I was young- roughly at the time Pulis was manager, so not a good quality at all.

I was taken to City because my Dad is from London and an Arsenal fan, so when he moved to Bristol he took an interest in a local side and chose City based on the colours.

I watch non league football on a semi regular basis (going to The Creek tomorrow) and I think people would be surprised at the quality of some games in non league.
