News Flash: Chelsea have better defenders than Bristol City. Shock, horror. More on this later.....

What a blessing "Bakes" and "Bails" were crocked while the loan window was still open.

News Flash: Juventus have better defenders than Bristol City. Shock, horror.

So how come Magnússon wasn’t better than Alfreton’s Aden Flint then?

Great logic mate.

Looks a cracking player, and he and Webster look a decent partnership.

Talking of Webster, where is the ball playing centre half we heard off when he signed? Too many punts upfield for my liking. Especially when our front two are 5 foot nothing.

Didn't see any punts, long passes maybe, but not punts.

I heard that Mourinho the other day said that he cannot play more attacking expansive football because he does not have the defensive strength in the club - despite signing Matic (the ultimate CDM behind Makelele & Tommy Doc) and a number of other defenders since he joined the club.

It does have merit though. When Midfielders know the defence is strong, the Midfield can put their trust in the defenders, which allows them to play a bit more expansively in order not to be punished on the counter attack.

Kalas is a superb defender - arguably on paper the best defender this club has ever had. You can argue Billy Wedlock which is understandable, but he played 100 years ago. As much as my hero growing up was Shaun Taylor, I think Kalas pips him (slightly) ?

Yes he has only played 2 games for us, but when you look at his international appearances (youth and senior) as well as how well he has played for clubs in this division and abroad, on paper, he has to be surely?

Early days I know but maybe he should break his ties with Chelsea now. He's 25. Abraham & Dasilva still have plenty of time with the club as age is on their side, Kalas doesn't and sadly, I dont think he ever will. So he should just come here on a permanent deal.

Really very sad

It is.

Considering he and Rose were here at the same time, I always though Caulker would be the England regular who played week in week out for Spurs.

Rose was nothing special when he played here, but he really upped his game once left us.

Just shows how much a career in football is in the mind I suppose, there aren't many that survive on talent alone.

True

But i always wondered why the pair of them did not live together when they were here.

I read through numerous articles and interviews that Caulker was living alone above a casino when he lived here, I presume Rose was in the city too? Could they not have got somewhere together?

Maybe this has been answered before but I've never seen / heard it.

I know sometimes it's not all that easy, maybe Rose stayed in London or maybe had a girlfriend & baby at the time who he was living with. Just always wondered if that was the case.

The sleepless nights, sat up till 5am replaying every bad decision I’ve ever made in my life, worrying what will be next … Tottenham sent me to Bristol City on loan at 18 and they put me in a flat in the city centre surrounded by nightclubs, two casinos opposite, the kind of money I’d never seen in my life, and no guidance whatsoever.

Taken from this. Not quite the "above the casino" i said but i knew it was something along those lines.

cheers, makes a bit more sense now, but while we could of offered guidance we aren't there to tell players how to spend their money,

Players with gambling problems will find a way to gamble regardless a good article the other week from the Beeb highlighted this,

While we aren't completely blameless there is only so much we can do,

Spurs would of been checking in on his wellfare, lets not forget once he left us he broke into the spurs first team

I hope he's put his demons behind him however

Absolutely.

Back then, (I say back then, it was nearly 10 years ago) players would have had to have physically gone into a casino in order to gamble. The clubs could have asked the staff not to allow them to enter.

Nowadays, clubs have no chance of managing it simply because a player can simply pick up their mobile phone where ever they are in the world and bet their entire fortune within an hour.

Come on now. Kalas is a good player I’m sure of that but crikey, best defender we’ve had after 2 games? If he was that good I don’t think he’d be going on loan to a Championship club for the 5th time and there’s probably a reason neither Boro or Fulham decided to re-sign him after promotion.

Also unsure what’s so incredible on paper about 14 caps for the Czech Republic aged 25, who’ve failed to qualify for the last 3 world cups and have a fairly poor crop of players.

Nathan Baker had played 77 more top flight games than Kalas at the same age, and had a few caps for England u21’s, I’d argue that’s more impressive “on paper”.

In a years time your argument might have some merit but I can’t get my head around the overreaction at this stage, particular as he and Webster both looked shaky in the first half yesterday.
