Testosterone can be used with older men that have erectile problems which can be caused by the levels of testosterone gradually reducing as we age but.......in the case of younger men it can enhance muscle growth which is why footballers can be prescribed it.

One drawback with older men taking testosterone is that it increases the risk of prostrate cancer which is why most GPS won’t prescribe it.

I'm sorry if this comment is off thread but this subject is as important as the thread title.

Many older men have prostate enlargement. The old saying is "It takes a long time to start to pee and dribbles when you think you've finished."

So the drug prescribed is a hormone suppressant which reduces the risk of cancer but also makes erection, a thing of the past. Hence the expression "I know what it stands for, but can't remember the last time it did."

Just listening now. Sounded to me as though LJ implied that Kelly has had testosterone (and other supplements) in order to build him up from the "bean pole" he was a few years ago.

Quote LJ @41:17 "...even like supplements we talked about with Lloyd Kelly and, erm protein, er testosterone sometimes that they take and various little bits and bobs. Are all built around them being their absolute best. I wish I'd have had it I'd have been about 6 foot 2..."

Not accusing anything. I'm just amazed that a 19 year old may have had testosterone supplements.

could be similar to the hormone treatment that Messi famously had at Barcelona?

I have just listened to the show, and LJ says "even testosterone in some cases" which suggests this might be in rare cases of player development at younger ages?

I think he was trying to show that the scientific approach goes so deep now they can read the whole player and what is required for their development.

They both came across really well. LJ seems to of set Marlon some goals and is impressed with him developing as a player.

Marlon Pack has improved SO much since LJ has been in charge, it’s unreal.

A lot of credit is due to whatever work has gone into his development.

Makes me wonder what they are doing to their bodies and what problems they will be facing in their later lives. We already know about things like wear and tear of the joints but adding sustances for the here and now without fully knowing future effects worries me.

Messi had growth hormone when younger I believe not Testosterone. I’m sure the club are all over the rules about this and as mentioned above it’s most likely supplements which supposedly help Testosterone production rather than injections of the hormone itself. I hope so anyway or we’re in big trouble!

Prefer Viagra myself. Not sure how much use it would be Pack and other players though as running around with a boner for 90 minutes may not be performance enhancing but no doubt entertaining to the ladies and gay men.

Not all older men should use viagra as it’s use lowers the blood pressure and GPS are reluctant to prescribe it if the man is on BP medication.

Im really surprised it can be bought legally without a prescription. I can only assume the dosage must be lower in the shop bought version.      :dunno:

Nonsense.

It was originally developed for lowering blood pressure. It was only when the well known side affect became apparent that the use of the drug was reassessed.

The concern regarding prescribing it to those on BP medication is because of the fear of reducing blood pressure too much, not raising it!

Many interesting Johnson interviews over the last few seasons. But this one is the best, especially with Pack there too. He seems to have transformed the club in how we do things. It shows why Lansdown stuck with him when 90% or more of fans would have got rid. He must have been doing great things behind  the scenes as otherwise there's  no way he would have kept his job. Marlon is one of many examples of LJs excellent coaching skills. I never thought he could become the player he has. Really optimistic about our future under LJ.

LJ has always been a good communicator especially with pre and post interviews and of course interviews like the most recent one on RB.

Ive heard him at Senior Reds twice now and he’s very open and honest, regardless of what questions he gets asked!

He comes over well and it’s clear he’s a deep thinker about the game.

And yet some see it as pseudo scientific bullshit and want us to " get back to basics", which presumably means hoof it up to the big bloke or something else from the 70's.

”get back to basics” was aimed largely at stopper Flint who repeatedly hoofed the ball aimlessly up the pitch - and it worked. Once Flint took that on board he started to keep his passing as simple as possible and the available midfielders came back to recieve a short pass from him.

But.......back to basics applies to every player. One basic is keep possession and one way of doing that is to keep passes as short as possible by not risking low percentage passes.....like the hoof up the pitch........finding space and making runs is another basic.

Don't be surprised, it's really very safe. Biggest issue are those fun party people that use it with poppers, that's unwise.

Did anyone listen to the interview, anything new / of interest come out of it?

I would say that Johnson seems really enamoured with the VR  stuff..... He was explaining how he was able to take Lloyd Kelly through a situation where he made a mistake and show him how it all looked from the attacking players point of view and how to eliminate that. I would really love to see this stuff in action.

I was also interested in his explanation of how he feels Pack has improved "playing in the cage" he calls it, making sure he works in certain areas and the body positions he needs to have when accepting a pass to be able to turn and use the ball. I think that my criticism of Pack is that he will sometimes revert to type, like the 1st half last Sunday, when he is pressured he turns and faces the back 4 and can't use the ball effectively, so I would say that is something he still needs to work on.

Oh and Pack went to Peppa Pig world during the International break, no mention of the kids joining him though. :)

Nice interview that. Thanks for the heads up.

Is it just me...but does anyone else find they have to crank the sound up when LJ is being interviewed?

Little man, little voice? I did laugh when LJ said he would probably be 6-2 with todays developments....... "Keep it real Lee" was Twentyman's reply. :)

Interesting little tidbit too about why Gustav E was let go. Apparently didn't want to put in 100% during training so LJ couldn't justify handing him a starting position. Again, we don't always know what goes on behind the scenes.

Also, BTW Spudski, I also find I have to crank it more when LJ talks

You usually find it's the little blokes that have the loudest voices. ?

I think they don't turn up the volume enough on the mics when interviewing.

Generally find the interviewer can be heard fine though. Both with BCFC and Radio Bristol.

I listened to it tonight - didn’t quite read the Engvall thing the same way. He talked about him just after Walsh and Eliasson who he cited as the best performers in training (not the best trainers) and then said Gus wasn’t like that. Did say he’d improved markedly and thought it might click for him in five years time, but got the impression it was more about the rest of the team being able to see him as first team material (made that point re Eliasson) but seemed to be a bit of application but more about ability not developing for me

Really enjoyed the interview. There were some good insights. It just reaffirms in LJ we have one of the best young English coaches, continually learning and thinking about the game.

Interesting points about Engvall. My thoughts were that he was given a lot of opportunities and just didn't take them.

Eliasson on the other hand has seen all of his hard work now coming to fruition.

So pleased for Marlon too. His performances have got even better this season and he is relishing the extra responsibility.
