Last two goals we’ve conceded

I was struck by the similarities of the goals Wigan and Villa scored against us. Both these goals came from decent deliveries, however, both would have been prevented if we had (1) won the aerial battle or at the least hampered the opponent who scored (2) in the case of the Wigan goal not given so much time/space for the cross or of course in the case of last night not given away a cheap free-kick. Suspect that last season Flint would have done enough in both cases to have dealt with the aerial threat.

Two quality deliveries made both goals.

Windass’s cross should have been closed down last week.  But once the ball came in you just have to accept it was Powell’s to miss...he didn’t.  Michael Owen scored a good few headers from Beckham crosses....if the ball is good and the movement is good, it’s pretty hard to defend.

Hourihane should never have got a free-kick because COD should have booted the ball upfield before the foul.

We conceded plenty of goals like that last season with Flint in our defence.  We defended Hourihane’s excellent dead balls pretty well last night. He got them all on the money, and we attacked the ball well.

I thought the defending was worse for the Wigan goal - it was good delivery and finish, but their player was allowed to cross from open play too easily and Kalas let Powell get in front of him. With Villa's goal the error was in what happened preceding the free kick (although we had given the ball away cheaply before Wigan's goal as well). The goal itself was the result of one of those whipped in balls that is difficult to defend against.

Said the same in the thread on our defence last night. Also I have to question whether some goalkeepers might have come for either cross and put off the attacker. Maenpaa does have a tendency to watch headers go past him...

TBF the Wigan header was well directed, and the one last night was so powerful and from no distance the keeper has little time to react, it would have to hit him to save it. Fam at Wigan a case in point, if he goes wide of the keeper, goal !
Silly free kick to concede last night, but it's his game to take players on and mostly is successful . The delivery was brilliant and the keeper had no chance coming for it. , same last week really ,curling away just inside the penalty spot very difficult to blame him.
