I see Scotland lost - again....

Scotland had their best team, in recent decades, in 1978 and had they had a better goalkeeper, better full backs, a great centre back to partner Gordon McQueen, an extra two great midfielders to compliment Souness and Gemmill they would've been world class. They also wore a blue version of the City umbro kit at the time.

It has to be remembered, however, that Scotland were consistently the world's number two ranked football nation for three quarters of a century from 1872. That takes some doing, although Wales and Ireland/Northern Ireland ran them close at times and the Isle of Man would've been ranked above them for most of that time but were banned from playing international football because they insisted on staging their home fixtures on a pitch which incorporated their flag in the design and the authorities didn't want to encourage the playing of international matches over three legs.

Ah, you do love a wind up where Scotland is concerned! Presumably you are aware they were unbeaten in their previous seven meaningful fixtures before last night - winning five and drawing two? Including a draw vs England? Not too shabby...yet you mischievously say they lost ‘again’...you old tinker!

Using the word 'meaningful' is a clever way to skip the fact that that's 4 defeats in the last 5 games.

I personally enjoyed the headline that the BBC went with... "Ten-man Scotland embarrassed in Israel"

So you think friendlies should count in a club or country’s record? Good grief, you must go beserk whenever City lose a pre season meaningless game...Weston super Mare beat us in a friendly before our double winning season - presumably that was an important game to you so you were calling for Cotts’ head before the ‘meaningful’ games started? And back in 2010 we were thrashed 5-2 by Clevedon Town in a pre season friendly whilst also losing to Torquay, Aldershot, Exeter and Helsingborgs in the warm up games...and all that as a championship club...you must have been furious and undoubtedly you were howling for GJ to be sacked after such a disgraceful run of results in ‘meaningless’ games....so, Scotland’s recent record (World Cup Qualifying games and Euro Nations League) - Pd 8 Won 5 Drawn 2 Lost 1....

Israel had lost their previous four home games. "That's OK lads; it's Scotland next"!

That was in the days when they had true Scotsman playing as well. Nowadays they just take Englishman who can't play for they're first choice team and qualify by way of they're great great Nan.

International friendlies count towards a nation's world ranking.

If, as you seem to be implying here, Scotland simply don't try in these 'meaningless' matches, then really they're shooting themselves in the foot.

Moreover, statistics show that around 50% of matches taken into account in the FIFA world rankings are friendlies (granted, this will change somewhat going forward for European teams given the formation of the UEFA Nations League).

So, you (and indeed the entire nation of Scotland) may not consider these friendlies to be meaningful, but it seems like they are to me (and those who run football). Perhaps sitting a little prettier in the rankings would lead to more conquerable qualifying draws (avoiding the might of nations such as Israel!) and perhaps even an appearance at a truly meaningful competition...

I finally got around to reading the “Friendly Cup” rules last night.  Had no idea you could qualify for the Euros through it.

I think you`ll find that @Robbored`s views on friendlies are well documented on here - no interest, don`t go, couldn`t care less blah blah blah.

Unless of course, he needs to include them to make a point.

I’ve never said they don’t try in friendlies - but countries are more likely to play untried and unproven players in those games to have a look at them....they are pretty meaningless games in the grand scheme of things. I only pointed out that Scotland had not lost in their last seven qualifying /euro nations league games before last night....and as you mentioned appearing at a meaningful competition, the little nation of Scotland blew England out of the water in qualifying for five consecutive World Cups from 1974....we couldn’t match that ....

I do love that first paragraph.

Basically if they had 6 more good players they’d have been much better.

Agreed, what an absolute farce, Gazza was unreal in a Rangers shirt, yes he’s had his fair share of health issues but astounded that the SFA are doing this due to his health issues off the field. They should be ashamed.

He’s in a real bad way at the moment by all accounts so I think it’s the right decision to keep him out of the headlines and let him get himself back together and hopefully it will happen next year
