Not sure we get that, we didn’t develop him....some might say he’s gone backwards?

Here’s the list from start of 17/18 season

Still our best midfield pairing are probably Smith and Pack pretty much two of the last non LJ signings.

Feel a bit sick reading that.

Our recruitment has to be some of the worst in the league.

Agreed. I suspect though they and LJ both knew they were off unless we went up. Clearly didn’t help the slump we went through. Some of those results were really poor - the leads we threw away were unacceptable. He said he would get leaders in too which ive not seen any evidence for.

Don’t get me wrong, I’m not big LJ fan. However some of the abuse he gets is OTT and not right. He’s an average manager with average funds for this league. SL has a decision to make if he is happy with that long term.

100 percent spot on. As for whether SL is happy with that. I suspect if a non family friend was at the helm he wouldn’t be happy at all. But as LJ is a friend then the extra slack he gets cut willl keep him in a job unless we are bottom 3 at some stage.

But we have a database, Mark Ashton’s database.

Does the computer ever say "No"? Doesn't look like it!

The only Johnson permanent signing to cement a place over the past few seasons is Brownhill, who has improved with time, but still seems to go absent for periods of each game. Otherwise far more misses than hits!

And I have to say the role or influence of the analysts concerns me in some respects

(No offence to your friend Knighty)

But what experience to they have in assessing a player and what influence / weighting do their assessments hold

ive heard accounts of lots of videos of Diony being watched

Bit old fashioned , but IMHO you simply cannot beat  watching a player ‘eyes on’ six or more times as a minimum  , at home and away from home

We’re 3 players short of being a good team but also 3 players away from being a poor team. We’re bang average in the championship but wouldn’t it be nice to see the team having a real go at some of the opposition, getting the crowd out of their seats and behind them.

Bristol Bears have a slogan “ together we rise ”. Somebody at BS should see this is where City are failing alarmingly.

That's a terrible slogan, sounds like two packets of yeast in discussion.

£52 million profit in two seasons on players, not bad. It wouldn't work here though, as apparently selling your 3 best players means you have to rebuild the whole squad and acts as an excuse because we are a "new team".

To be fair if you have to sell your 3 prize assets then you have to rebuild and it isn’t easy. I do think that Kalas and Kelly are decent replacements and we shouldn’t be as far away from where we were last season.

Any decent manager would make provisions to replace his 3 prized assets before selling them.

Leitner in for around the same amount of money as we bought Watkins for.

There's a player we could've done with. Appreciate Farke has the connection but phwoar, imagine if we spent money on a proper midfielder rather than more ******* wingers.

Which as stated he has done although Reid I think not easy to replace due to fact he scored 20 goals. Also just because you replace doesn't mean it will work as well.

Thing for me is he isn't getting the best out of what we have as 2 of 3 replacements I think are as good or almost as good.

Yep colours in blue signed and sold by LJ.

Like I said the key sales Kodjia, Reid, Bryan, Flint all inherited. Johnson/Ashton have wasted millions and still talk about rebuilding. Pair of Jokers.

That is ******' horrendous . I disagree on a couple , Leko and Kent don't deserve such high marks.

Listening to talk sport earlier, they were discussing Mark Hughes. The guy said about the recent signings that they had pretty much all been poor, he also said for a while Hughes had told reporters he had final veto. Then after ( I think they said ) the DOF got the sack he said he hoped he'd get more say, so the original statement was just politics. Apparently he had not only not wanted their £22.5m CB from Borrusia MG, he actually said not to sign him as he wasn't good enough for the Prem, (the chap on H&J agreed with that)  but they signed him anyway.
Now I am not defending LJ, but I wouldn't put it past the current set up to be being a little careful with the truth. I wouldn't be surprised if LJ just says he has a final veto so as not to look too weak.
However we are set up, and whoever has the final say, heads should roll . How anyone at senior level can look at that list and not be, at least embarrassed is remarkable. If they give the culprits more money they need their heads examining.

Neither does Diony….

On another note related to your final paragraphs, I often wonder about the relationship between Ashton and LJ. So Ashton is in principle LJ’s boss?, having headhunted, interviewed and signed him etc, but it was obvious that SL has lined LJ up for this job for some time. There must be one hell of a lot of office politics there, especially with the transfer business, and especially as LJ claims to have final say whilst Ashton always appears when there is credit to claim and hides from blame. LJ is obviously mates with SL and his son, well in with the family. But I am sure during his time that Ashton has ensured he has a few ears. Now someone on here said that after the jan transfer mess that MA looked rather sheepish/almost like he was going to cry in a meet-the-fans thing. Now we know, and LJ frequently has shown with Hörður at preston and Kelly after millwall, that he pushes others under a bus rather than takes responsibility himself, and I have no doubt what-so-ever that Mr Ashton is no less lacking in this element of self-preservation/blaming others for his failures. I do not know how much or little SL actually cares for the club, but with his twentyman interview statement of “I put more money into the club than the fans” I do believe he cares very, very much for the money he has invested in it, and so if it looks like blame will be placed from up on high for this list, I wonder out of LJ and MA who will do the Michael Gove/Brutus act first? Must be one hell of a one-up, point scoring atmosphere. I wonder what the weekly? "progress review" meetings between LJ, SL and MA must be like, as I am sure that I heard that these occur.

I think that comment was a bit of a bite back at the criticism that he, the manager and the club had got. TBF if I were in his position where I was spending shed loads and trying to get success, not only to fail but to get dogs abuse for trying I'd have a major piss on. I really do think he cares but he is also loyal, probably too loyal at times. Someone has to be held accountable soon.

In my head it would be 2 people trying to suck up to the boss, while not trying to show the other guy that they are sucking up and at the same time back stabbing while praising each other.

Another great post Bob

Full of good points again

Please post more

We must have been in a Bob zone today because I was musing over exactly this

Youve explained my thoughts brilliantly having posted that I wonder what MAs view / stance is on LJ

Clearly both MA and LJ have SLs ear so will be very reluctant to be honest about the other unless they are totally convinced they individually have both of  SLs ears and hold the sway if push comes to shove

As you say , Throw JL in the mix and

I think that comment was a bit of a bite back at the criticism that he, the manager and the club had got. TBF if I were in his position where I was spending shed loads and trying to get success, not only to fail but to get dogs abuse for trying I'd have a major piss on. I really do think he cares but he is also loyal, probably too loyal at times. Someone has to be held accountable soon.

In my head it would be 2 people trying to suck up to the boss, while not trying to show the other guy that they are sucking up and at the same time back stabbing while praising each other.

It’s interesting, because LJ liked to trump on about how it was he who drove to tammy’s and had tea with the family etc (whilst MA sang on about meeting chelsea’s top men and selling the “project”.) LJ also liked to pipe on how it was he who found Eillisson whilst sitting on his bed with his laptop (no sniggering,) but this season there has been a definite shift towards championship, rather than overseas, players. Was this LJ trying to wrestle back control? As Watkins did previously “play” for him I believe.

It was actually your post on wondering what Ashton really thinks of LJ that got me thinking of this, but I always run out of likes too soon. It must be an odd atmosphere at our club, especially as with SL living in Guernsey I believe, but may be wrong, that he is limited to 60? days in which he can be in this country or else has to pay tax. I have suspicions that the recent shifts with the media team and the “alleged proximity” of certain individuals within it may have been part of this power play. Again, LJ and MA may be best chums, but LJ’s need to surround himself with unthreatening friends as coaches rather than those with experience and differing views, is revealing. I recall with the pembo dismissal that LJ and MA were singing from different hymh sheets even back then. LJ said it had been a joint decision to remove pembo, distancing himself, whilst mark ashton said how LJ had planned to remove pembo by the end of the season.

Again

agree

Having seen them at Q&As etc - Not convinced by the chemistry between MA / LJ

I think MA would always look after no 1 - is he brave or confident enough to be honest in his views to SL - Think he would throw LJ under the bus in a moment if it saved himself or protected his position

I don’t think LJ would rush to admit mistakes but more likely and also , IMHO to let his true feelings spill

Will both survive Ultimately or only one ?

I can see the first break being MA conveniently taking up a full time role with the EFL

The point is that this is a new team - regardless of who signed them. A new group of players will always take time to gel as a team.

Agree to a point, but how long can you keep saying that? I thought LJ was all about high pressing, quick passing football on the ground, which in turn is entertaining and will get you your "reputation" and "identity" as a manager/coach/team. Now last season for 5 months we had an "identity", and I understand that we have lost some decent players BUT.... we don't need Flint for the overall style of play that we pretty much made a name for ourselves with last season, in our cup run and half our league campaign, Bryan has been adequately replaced as well. So imo all we are really missing is Reid for that style of entertaining football??

So at the start of the season I wasn't really that hopeful for this season and would happily have taken 12-14th with some decent football and gradual improvement in our play as the season progresses, as I didn't really know a lot about Webster, and a bit unsure how Kelly would cope as a first teamer week in, week out. I have watched most games this season, and I seen away at Swansea one of the most confident, professional performances from an away City side in years. West Brom away we played some exciting excellent stuff at times and apart from the defensive errors not many people complained, and personally I could at least see some really good positives. Stoke second half we attacked and again played some decent entertaining stuff.

Where are these type of performances gone? Where has that style gone? We are not even attempting to play that style of game now which people seem to want to watch. It has turned into predictable, boring, and generally a rubbish brand of football. This type of football comes from the coach, and the coach only. Why are we not having a right go at the likes of Preston and Millwall??

I accept we are not World beaters, and accept there will be games when it just doesn't click. But what is being served up now is a joke, and like many fans I just want to see entertaining football and some passion. So for me the "we need time" or "we are a new team" is just utter b0llocks and nobody is falling for it anymore. We look like a team regressing under LJ at the moment and it seems the players just don't seem to know what they are doing from game to game, as LJ is trying to be too clever every week with formation changes and team selection. Most importantly to me it is boring and is turning into a chore to turn up.

If this brand of football is here until the end of this season (regardless where we finish) I certainly won't be getting a season ticket next year if he is still in charge. He has had long enough, and enough money to have built what he wanted to by now imo.

Think all of the above shows that MA and LJ are not together.  Think MA was desperate to bring in Appleton, would’ve been a lovely dynamic for him.  But he got LJ, who has SL’s ear, meaning he can jump the chain of command.  That must piss MA off.
