Feels good being a city fan.

Louie Donowa’s winner against The Gas, 1-0 win when I was 9 is the single best moment that springs to mind. It all means that much more when you are a kid especially knowing that you have bragging rights over 50% of your school the next day.

The sad thing is if it happened again, 90% of my sons school wouldn’t give a damn

5 4 win away to Mansfield, not an earth shattering result, but incredible excitement in a packed away end, 4 2 down with 6 minutes left, followed by lots of antics in the car park outside afterwards, just a really good away day. My Dad, getting on a bit, didn't realise we had actually won, the celebrations of goals 4 and 5 sort of merged into one!

This is the game that automatically springs to my mind too. Plenty going on on and off the pitch all day. I took my missus to the game, and she too lost track of the score and had to ask me on the walk back to the car - unfortunately she chose to ask when we were surrounded by Mansfield fans ?

Away from home the 2-2 at Coventry remains the most emotional due to the huge number of city fans who got in to watch(somehow) and the packed atmosphere, and the miracle of staying up.

the 6-0 win at Bradford should have secured a job for life for Cotterill, if he hadn't started to believe his own publicity. i was lucky enough to get there but very few city fans travelled so less buzz.

at home a match against Millwall was my first sighting of their fans setting fire to a policeman and using his helmet for a kick about. but i prefer not to think too often of the appalling way matches were played in those days. but my favourite home match has to be city 3 swindon 0 when flint said no no no

I think most City fans have managed to wipe the 3-1 memory from their mind because they don't want to remember the second leg :) :) :)

I'll never forget it because we had an exchange student from Hungary at our house and I took him to the game, hoping to convert him. Well he ended up being so impressed by the Sags spawny comeback that he declared himself one of your lot! That backfired.

I prefer to remember the tie a few years later. A 2-1 extra time win in the second (away) leg that made it 3 away derby wins in 18 months!!

Anyway, I'm surprised nobody has mentioned the 2007 promotion clincher vs Rotherham. Boiling hot day, sell out crowd,  fans drinking on the streets beforehand, an epic pitch invasion and the satisfaction of pipping Forest and their condescending fans.

What made it even sweeter was that it came after so many near misses.. In 1998 and 2015 promotions, we had bounced back quickly and relatively effortlessly from recent relegations but this was the climax of a long hard  8 year slog in the the tier, one which seemed destined never to end.The capitulation at Blackpool, playoff defeats to Cardiff and then Blackpool, the mess of the Tinnion era, Plymouth and their whole ***POP*** nonsense. .. We'd watched so many others celebrate at our expense and this was finally our day in the sun.

Finally, I felt that the heartache was worth it. Sheer footballing joy and my favourite moment as a City fan.

In the last 20 years the et win against the Monkey Hangers at AG was brilliant. The whole of the Doman shook and the club brought in structural engineers to check it out. 2004 I think...

Then the 1-3 win against arch rivals Cardiff at NP when Murray  scored two and cupped his hand to his ear as his ran past the Cardiff fans down to our end. Absolutely brilliant moment. 2001 iirc

I used to love NP. The most hostile away ground  I ever visited. A real shithole with no roof on the bogs and just a gap of few yards with netting between us and the home fans. Bottles of piss  thrown over with coins whizzing over head. Even the police outside the away end with riot shields lined up like Roman soldiers were intimidating.

Just going there fired me right up.

Best away games ;

  • Arsenal in our first game in the top flight , played so well and a terrific commentary from the one and only Brian Moore .So many City fans in the Clock End. Sat with my 3 brothers in the stand.
  • Leeds away on a midweek Cup Tie day due to the 3 day week. Football special from Temple Meads  City fans ,kept behind for safety  and a needed police escort to the station
  • Spurs away 1967 in the Cup 5th round when we missed a twice taken penalty before losing 2-0 thanks to Jimmy Greaves . 54,000 unsegregated. At least 10 thousand from Bristol

Best home games

  • Man Utd last year . Fantastic atmosphere from the first minute to the last
  • Hartlepool semi final last minute winner brought the roof down . Unbelievable noise.

The older you get, the longer the list! Here are some that I recall without too much effort and not repeating too many of those already posted.

1. Blackpool home in the cup 1959. 1-1 and Wally Hinshlewood outshone the great Stanley Matthews.

2. FA cup again, 1960. 11-0 home to Chichester .  I remember that one just for the number of goals we scored, big John getting 5 of them!

3. Any win is good against our lovely neighbours, but for some reason the Louis Donowa goal sticks in my mind. Maybe a win against them was long over due.

4. Obviously promotion to the top flight, and Joe Royle's debut netting all four goals in the win over 'Boro. Great memories of our time in the top league, and the one game which must top the list is the (in)famous draw away to Coventry, amazing scenes and emotions.

5.Freight Rover final under TC, mickey mouse cup it might be, but it felt a whole lot more than that on the day.

6. Play off season under GJ, and the unbelievable disappointment of the final.

7. The double season under Cotts, the away defeat to cheating Swindon, when they won the league that day. Then our inevitable progress and dominance as the season moved to a close with an oh so sweet 3-0 nil win home to Swindon and wrapping it up with a thumping win over Walsall. It might have only been League 1, but that for me was our best season. What a team he put together, I was so convinced he would go on and take us up again. Got that wrong didn't I!

8. More recently the Man U game and the game at the Etihad and Flint's astonishing goal line clearance. I couldn't make the return fixture, I had real flu, could hardly get out of bed, so much for the flu jab!!

I've already noted more than my fair share, but others keep coming to mind. Games involving Super Bob and Mark Gavin in our promotion season under JJ. In particular Swansea away, night game, 0-5 and didn't BT get a hattrick?

Oh and Trundle's 2 cracking goals against Scunthorpe?

I had to look that up, I genuinely have no recollection of this game at all. Now if I could only just forget the past 18 years ...

Funny when I was younger and lot less mature my thoughts on rovers were pretty unprintable but as I can see the bigger picture in life I now realise that rivalry should be healthy and winning and losing to your arch rival very emotional but that's it , I actually really enjoy the banter and have many blue friends.

Seem to remember players and grounds more than the games;

Ashton Gate; fans trying to "take our EE" and the battles at open end funny and more interesting than some games, promo to the top div, on the pitch with AD and players in the stand, trips to the old grounds inc; Swindon, Cardiff, Wolves, Southampton, Leics, Millwall, Charlton, Watford, Burnley, Preston many others.

Players; our own Galley, Garland, Gow, Gibson and the lot that took us there, and the hundreds of others that have passed through and the few that are still here Murray etc.

Now, not many stay long enough to register even, the grounds are grounds are nearly all  "modern" and built to make as much money as possible from internationly sourced players and many managers who are only here for one thing, money.

So I`ve seen some memorable grounds and players over 50 plus years, hope you young uns out there see likewise.

There has been a few and most of them mentioned on this thread but the one game and night I will never forget was the 2008 Palace semi.A brilliant game that had it all, great goals, missed penalty for them and then the clincher from McIndoe. I was still buzzing the next day and just couldn't wait for the final to come round and that turned out to be a massive anti climax.....

Lost 1 6 at home to wolves around same time when benny lenartson was in charge.

Yes I remember them both well.

:shocking: :shocking:

But bettered by the 6-0 promotion win, and the icing on the cake 8-2 at home to Walsall.

:winner_third_h4h: :winner_third_h4h:

My best memories were beating the unbeaten (at that time) Leeds at Elland Road in the FA cup, and the 2-2 draw with Coventry at Highfield Road, that kept us in the top flight.

That ******************POP******************** stuff used to crack me up. Utter nonsense. Funny though. Wasn’t it a hangover from the old Net Centre days? Sure @Olé would remember!

Yep @CyderInACan the POP nonsense was a long running thread from Plymouth fans, albeit there was something to be said for a load of parallel forums for all the local clubs, in the West and Wales, with fans jumping between them to collectively mock the misfortunate at any given weekend or season. Sadly the Net Centre was long since gone by 2007 when we finally had something to celebrate.

This is my most memorable moment. 1991, playing the old moustachioed gas.

Final 10 mins, the gas are awarded a penalty, which Holloway takes. Andy Leaning saves!

Straight back up the other end and a Louie Donovan scrappy goal! It didn’t matter that it wasn’t great quality, I’ve never felt the Dolman bounce as much in 40 years!

All the sweeter as it was the end of the gas’ hoodoo over us.

Enjoy watching this, I know I loved watching it again.

1974 - Eastville 4-1 have it !! Though have to say , the 2-1 in the cup was even better.
1984 - Chester away 2-1 . Train was turned into a Special , we ditched the Police escort and drinking in town. I remember the pub was so busy some lads took a table into the middle of the road and sat there drinking !
1992 - Pisa away ..... City in Europe
1992 - Sunderland away 3-0
League Cup semi's Forest and Man C .... one day !
1989 - Swansea away 5-0 The Welsh are ******* shit, the Welsh are ******* shit ,and now your gonna believe us . Yorath is back :rofl2br:
While we're at it then , 1992 Cardiff in the LC , Andy Cole master class .

When you start thinking about it, there are quite a few games I've enjoyed. Add the days out on the piss with mates, then you're talking

Aaaaaaaah great memories of the netcentre though. Happy days. Almost!

Second favourite:

I went to AG from hospital, as I’d been run over after the Swindon game. My legs were shattered and I had a head injury, so I was taken down by a nurse, i was in the wheelchair enclosure.

Jacki Dziekanowski scored 2 in the last 5 or 6 minutes. I jumped out of the wheelchair, forgetting that my legs were broken!

What a player. I’ve never seen his like since then. An absolute hero. A luxury player? Probably. Bad for the squad’s morale? Probably. However, it was like watching Socrates or George Best playing for us, so who could argue? That team with Andy Cole and Leroy Rosenior playing up front with him was the best forward line I’ve seen.

The video is poor quality, but it bought back some memories.

Third (and last) favourite...

1992 cup tie against Leicester City. The Junior and Jacki show.

I could only find a poor quality video. The BBC showed it, with John Motson saying about Jacki “he’s not just from a different country, he looks like he’s from a different planet”.

I know it’s Donowa, not Donovan. I wasn’t allowed to edit. Just saying, before I’m corrected...
