west brom watershed

where's the joy

we played fluent, attacking football of a really impressive calibre at West Brom and lost 4-2.

since then Pack has been put deeply into the holding role and we have stopped leaking goals.

boring to watch maybe but much more effective, in terms of carving out results.

perhaps we may be able to combine the swagger and zip from our attack in that game with the new found defensive pragmatism?

to be 7th this term, having sold our 3 best players is quite an achievement, but we need a fox in the box if we want to get into the play offs

its within our reach, one more razor sharp signing please

I'm guessing/hopeful that Palmer is intended to be our latest attempt to replace Bobby. If we can combine that defensive pragmatism with one more goal per game from our attack then we will have a very enjoyable remainder to the season.

But reckon two of them have been replaced by better players

Agree with the last point

Much of our defensive quality is down to Kalas and Webster forging a solid pairing which hadn’t developed fully when we played the Baggies.

Pack has always played a defensive role and why he’s often compared to Cole Skuse.

That game was on the 18th September. I can’t agree that Pack has dropped deep since then unless my short term memory has gone! Think it was a fair bit after that

They played well together right from the start, ie Swansea away, prior to West Brom. It was nothing to do with that. The real issue at West Brom was both full backs had shockers, Hunt in particular, we were torn to shreds on the counter down both flanks. That left Kalas and Webster far too much to do, to cope with the pace and movement of West Brom's runners.

To answer @where's the joy, as well as simply being a bad day for Hunt and to an extent Kelly (I'm sure both full backs licence to attack was re-calibrated), I think you're right about a change after West Brom, it was the last time in memory we specifically went gung-ho for the opener, it is clear since then we've become this second half team that keeps it tight first half.

West Brom is one of the toughest places to go in the Championship and it's one of the few times LJ has gone all out for an early goal to silence them and give us something to defend... but besides a one-sided day at Swansea, under LJ our best results away at tough places (crowd and form) have been by keeping it tight and nicking it (Sheff Utd, Birmingham, Stoke).
