Guardian Article: ‘We are not really fancied and that suits us’

Not sure what the confusion is here, of the current Championship clubs only Neil Harris has held his job longer than Johnson. Since the Johnson tenure began only two other managers who have been in this league at the same time as ‘Lee Johnson’s Bristol City’  and crossed our path are ‘Chris Hughton’s Brighton’ and ‘Nigel Clough’s Burton’.

Johnson is the second longest serving current Championship manager since February 2016, if you were to include managers still with their clubs since his arrival he is fourth. He is either second longest serving of 24, if you only include the 24 clubs in the seasons Championship at present  or fourth out of 30(?) clubs to include those promoted or relegated since February 2016, either way kudos to Lee as we’re in a better position than we were at the time of his appointment, SL for not pulling the trigger when he’s had justifiable opportunity and BCFC in general.

Either way his relatively long tenure is indicative of steady improvement on the pitch as well as a patient owner who unlike many on here sees the big picture and isn’t prone to knee jerk misjudgments. The steady improvement on the pitch and pragmatic approach of our owner/key decision maker are things we should be proud of. Of course some won’t see it that way, fortunately those undiscerning voices are reducing in number and volume.

Interesting, but I doubt that's right tbh.

Do you know for sure that's the criterion the Guardian writer based his comment on?

Yes. Categorically.

It is the only way for what is said to fit.

Harris is the longest serving Championship manager, yet Millwall have been in the Championship a shorter time.

It's all about the length of tenure at the club.

If so, it shouldn't be.

The whole point about the 'Championship's longest serving manager' is that the key word is 'Championship'.

So it's taken from the date that either:

1) You are appointed manager of a Championship club

2) You get promoted from div.1

3) You get relegated out of the PL

Then you are a Championship manager.

Longest serving Championship manager MUST mean the current manager who has managed in the Championship for the greatest continuous amount of time.

Otherwise a club could get consecutive promotions from L2 with a manager who's been there 5 years and he immediately becomes the longest serving Championship manager. Ridiculous.

If you said it was the manager who has the longest tenure at a club currently in the Championship, that would make sense, but it's a big difference, and 'the Championship's longest serving manager' speaks for itself imo.

Otherwise my whole input into this thread has been a waste of time, and I'm not having that. :whistle2:;)

He's the manager of a Championship side, thus a Championship manager.

Equally the quote in the article was

Quote

That is depressingly true; 194 managers have left positions across English football’s top four tiers in that time, making the 37-year-old the second-longest serving in the Championship, behind Millwall’s Neil Harris. It has not been plain sailing but it is impossible to ignore the progress of his vibrant, young team – unbeaten in 12 matches having last tasted defeat on 24 November. The Robins are dark horses for promotion.

Now, it's not fantastically worded as it could be taken 3 ways.

1. The longest serving manager of one club, who is at a Championship club.

2. The person who has managed in the Championship the longest (regardless of the club)

3. The person who has managed a club in the Championship, specifically, for the longest time.

However the context given by Millwall and Neil Harris means it can only be option 1.

What do we think these 40 things are?

1. Red Bull is great with Vodka.

2. In Germany they don't really use credit or debit cards, mainly cash.

3. The Second World War was mainly caused by the unsatisfactory resolution to the First World War.

4. VW campervans are cool, but hugely overpriced.
