Championship review - 15 games to go.

I thought it would be a good time to look at how all the Championship sides are doing.  Starting at the bottom…

24th – Ipswich (19 points, 1 game less) – Be careful what you wish for. Mick McCarthy finally left and the result has been 3 wins all season and -31 Goal difference.  Their next 3 games are Stoke (H), Wigan (A), Reading (H)and they have to win at least 2 of those to have any chance.

23rd – Bolton (26 points, 1 game less) – If you think that they won 3 of their first 4 games, they have been pretty much as bad as Ipswich since (despite a surprise win at Brum in the week).  The players weren’t paid in November and it looks a good bet they’ll be back in League One next year

22nd – Rotherham (28 points, 1 game less) – Their away form has been terrible all year but their home form was initially reasonable.  This has declined as well and they are now in real trouble.  Would be their 2nd relegation in 3 years.

21st – Reading (29 points, 1 game less) – On paper they don’t look as bad as the other relegation contenders with only -11 goal difference.  They would actually be mid table if you only looked at their first half performances.  For whatever reason – stamina, confidence, concentration – they seem to lose games in the second half

20th – Millwall (31 points) – Had a terrible start but have clawed their way out of it a bit.  If you consider they beat Everton, they really shouldn’t go down but still have to be careful. Stuck with Neil Harris despite their awful start.

19th – Wigan (34 points, 1 game less) – Started the season well before falling away.  In another season, I could see them being in real trouble but should have enough to scrape over the line.

18th - QPR (39 points) – Will be playing Championship football next year.  Have finally resolved their FFP case with a fine and embargo but can start next season with a clean slate.  Still in the cup

17th – Stoke (39 points, 1 game less) – Will be playing Championship football next year. Started poorly and kept expecting them to push on but it hasn’t happened.  They sacked Rowett but so far the managerial change has made them worse.

16th - Wednesday (40 points) - Will be playing Championship football next year.  Appointing Steve Bruce shows a little more ambition but it’s too late for this season.

15th - Brentford (40 points) – Will be playing Championship football next year.  Have had a Bristol City season!  2 reasonable runs of form have bookended a horrible losing run after Dean Smith left.  Can hope for better next term.

14th - Blackburn (43 points, 1 game less) – Have had a good first season back in the division (particularly compared with Wigan and Rotherham).  A top half finish is certainly achievable

13th – Preston (43 points, 1 game less) – Had a terrible start but have pulled themselves up to mid table respectively.  On a good run but the playoffs are probably just out of reach

12th – Swansea (44 points, 1 game less) – Have been solidly mid-table all season without really looking like challenging.  Sold rather than bought in the window and I can seem them finishing bottom half.

11th – Hull (44 points, 1 game less) - Rock bottom in October but then had a fabulous run to pull themselves into the top half before dropping back a little lately. The playoffs are probably beyond them but a top half finish would be a good season for them.

10th – Villa (44 points, 1 game less) – Underperforming. The 3rd best attack and the 3rd worst defence show why they are the divisions draw specialists.  Need to buy some defenders in the summer if they are not clobbered over FFP

9th – Forest (46 points, 1 game less) – Started strongly before a wobbly run saw Aitor Karanka given the boot.  The return of Martin O’Neill was a dream homecoming but it hasn’t really clicked yet.

8th – Birmingham (46 points, 1 game less) – Have had a much better season on the pitch. Off the pitch it’s all about FFP.  Any sort of points deduction would kill their play off ambitions and could even leave them looking over their shoulders.

7th – Derby (51 points) – Have been there or thereabouts all season.  Have looked really impressive at times such as a 4-3 win at Norwich and a 4-1 win at West Brom but at other times have slipped up against the lesser teams (e.g. this week’s draw at Ipswich and losing at Bolton)

6th – Boro (51 points) – As you might expect with a Pulis side, they have the division’s best defence but they are only scoring barely more than a goal a game, leading to a lot of draws.

5th – CITY (53 points) – On a glorious run of form with the division’s second tightest defence.  I feel the next 5 games are crucial.  Wolves is where we lost our mojo last year. If we could beat Norwich and Leeds then a very hard path to the top 2 becomes possible.  If we lose these games then we are probably out of the play off zone again.  With all of the teams around us left to play, if we make the top 6, no-one will be able to say we don’t deserve it.

4th – West Brom (54 points) – Have the most goals scored and the highest goal difference in the division.  I really expected hem to run away with it like Wolves last season but it hasn’t happened.  Part of it may be down to a bit of indiscipline with red cards costing them in a couple of games around Christmas.

3rd – Sheff Utd (58 points, 1 game less) – Have gone about their business very effectively and under the radar.  On current form, could easily overtake both Leeds and Norwich to win the league.

2nd – Norwich (60 points, 1 game less) – Had a fairly average start and then had a fantastic 11 game unbeaten run to move into the top 2. Have gone off the boil somewhat lately with 12 points from their last 8 games.

1st – Leeds (61 points, 1 game less) – Have been up there from day one.  Have lost a bit of form since Spygate with 4 defeats in their last 8.

SUMMARY – I can see Reading just scraping over the line to send the current bottom 3 down.  I can also see Sheff U overtaking the long-time leaders to win the division.  I can’t see anyone outside the top 7 making the playoffs.  For City, it is about getting through the next 5, if not unbeaten, then at least relatively unscathed.  Finally, beating Preston would help!

Much as Sheff Utd are a decent team, take out Billy Sharp and they would struggle. Stop him and they look a lot less effective, just as he was missing from their FA cup defeat. Likewise Norwich are very dependent on Pukki. The difference is that I can see Pukki doing OK in the Premier League, while Sharp would struggle.

Since the 2000/01 Championship regular season ended, and each season since (up to 2017/18) the following has happened.

The team finishing in 6th place has had a high of 22 wins and a low of 18 wins.

The average number of wins, when finishing in 6th position, is 20.28 per regular Championship season

So if we can get to 23 wins ASAP (8 more than we have right now) we will almost certainly be in, at least, the play-offs.

We have 15 matches left to play, many of whom are in and around us, it won’t be easy, but it’s gonna be great fun!

COYR.

Although Norwich have gone a bit off the boil, they have been a bit unlucky in games. They create so many chances and next week will easily be our biggest test so far, would happily take a point and keep the unbeaten League run going (or overall run if we don't get beat tomorrow). If we manage to finish in the top 6 it will be a hell of an achievement considering the new players this season.

Stole this from the Norwich forum, does show the scale of what we face, was right before today’s games...

Leeds have 3 teams left to play in the Top 7, 4 teams left to play in the bottom 5 and 1 local derby left to play.

Norwich have 2 teams left to play in the Top 7, 4 teams left to play in the bottom 5 and no derby left to play.

Sheff Utd have 3 teams to play in the Top 7, 2 teams left to play in the bottom 5 and 1 derby left.

WBA have 3 teams to play in the Top 7, 2 teams left to play in the bottom 5 and 2 derbies left.

Bristol City have 6 teams to play in the Top 7, 2 teams left to play in bottom 5 and no derbies.

Middlesborough have 2 teams to play in Top 7, 2 teams left to play in bottom 5 and no derbies.

Derby have 1 team to play Top 7, 1 team in the bottom 5 and 1 derby to play.

There have been a lot of these matches already played, we are the outlier. Derby have played everyone in our mini league bar us, and Middlesborough not far behind. It’s a challenge!

We have 3 teams in the bottom 5 - Ipswich and Reading (Home), Millwall (away).

We do. Did not check it, and at a quick look I think whoever did this has also missed the last day of the season when WBA play Derby. Looks like when I have a minute I need to check it’s veracity!

Added them quickly up myself and got to the adjusted numbers above.

My final table prediction:

1 Norwich

2 West Brom

3 Leeds

4 Sheff Utd

5 Bristol City

6 Middlesbrough

7 Derby

8 Nottm Forest

9 Preston

10 Aston Villa

11 Birmingham

12 Brentford

13 Swansea

14 Hull

15 Blackburn

16 Stoke

17 Sheff Wed

18 QPR

19 Millwall

20 Wigan

21 Reading

22 Rotherham

23 Ipswich

24 Bolton

Norwich to win it for me. I feel that WBA's attacking quality will get them over the line at the expense of Leeds who are running out of steam due to their style of play.

Sheff Utd lose too many away from home for auto but will comfortably be playoffs. Think I'm being a bit optimistic with us but we'll see.

Last night I reviewed Derby's and Boro's results in the exact same fixtures they have played compared to us. I.e We beat Ipswich away, Derby drew with Ipswich away.

I discovered in the same games, City got 27 points  but Derby got 30 points. However in the same games we got 33 points compared to Boro's 28 points.

This surprised me a little as I keep reading about our tough run in. I assumed this meant both Derby and Boro would have got more points than us against the teams we'd mutually played.

Match Boro's results in the matches we havent played yet and we will be on easy street.

If wishes were horses then beggars would ride,
If turnips were swords I’d have one by my side.
If ifs and buts were pots and pans
There’d be no work for tinkers’ hands!

Lets wait and see, far too muh football left to be played from now til seasons end. Start the guess work with 5 games left then the picture will be clearer, especially after yesterdays results.
