I thought prevoius uproar resulted from the fact that Bond had retired and the 007 designation was recycled to Lashana Lynch's character. Has that been scrapped?

I don't even get how that's an uproar, its not like Jude Bellingham where the 00 branch would would retire the 007 designation once he left....

I think giving 007 status to Lynch could be a storyline that works, similar to the storyline stuff they did in Casino Royale and Skyfall. My concern is that a strong female character = completely unemotional, henpecks/undermines bond regularly, kicks ass of everyone in all action scenes, ultimately nothing likeable about her. Hopefully they're just messing with me in the trailers!

It can't be as bad as Quantum of Solace or Spectre.

If it's up there with Casino Royale & Skyfall then I'll be happy enough.

Quantum of solace is the worst film ever made. I thought warriors of vitrue was the worst film ever but QOS beat it.

But it introduced me to Olga Kurylenko. So I can't hate it too much, but it was utter dross.

Unemotional. Undermines fellow MI5 staff. Kicks ass in all the action scenes. This could be describing James Bond himself.

It sounds like you mainly have an issue with the fact it's a woman.

I have an issue if she is being shoehorned into a James Bond movie to make a statement. Lets see if she has humour, charisma, good storyline/character development or if she's just being shoved in there to show off female strength.

And what's wrong with this if she was? You can inspire young girls and have a good storyline.

The target audience for Bond isn't young girls. Most people don't want to see political agendas forced into movies, especially in a historic franchise which has an established formula. If the writers have chosen to do what you say then I conclude it's more about destroying Bond culture than empowering women, it's not a very appropriate place to do it when you could also make your own movie to do that without all the limitations of it being Bond.

There have been lots of strong female characters in previous Bond films but they have usually been feminine too. This new character comes across in the trailer as very masculine but in a female body. I am reserving judgement because the character may work but from the trailer I'm a little concerned.

political agendas

How is empowering women a political agenda? How is having a strong female character of colour a bad thing?

It's 2020. It's time to be progressive, especially in one of the biggest film franchises because young girls will watch the movie for gods sake.

James Bond is still James Bond. He's still a white straight man. There's still gadgets. I believe there's 4 Aston Martins in the film. All of the classic Bond elements are there.

As you say you don't even know her role in the film, but you're deliberately calling her out because she's a woman who is a bit masculine? So what? Do you have issues with Felix Leiter, or is it just because the new 00 is a woman?

It all depends if she is a good character or not. Just because shes a woman or just because shes black or just because its progressive doesn't make anything good in of itself. Do you agree with the MLK saying to judge someone by the content of their character and not meaningless features like colour of skin?

I haven't called the character out (will do that after I have seen it?), I have stated that it may be a cynical attempt to comply with modern bullshit standards and I hope this exercise was about making a good movie and not an expedition in appeasing people who say things like "its 2020, time to be progressive".

To be honest some of the other Craig movies have not been very good anyway so the bar isn't even that high at the moment. There is plenty that I complain about from lots of the Bond movies but Lasana Lynch's presence is quite striking from this trailer. The point is that if the bad guy or the bond girl is crap then it has been done before many times. I don't remember an agent in the MI6 in stiff competition with him like this, if by also making that character a woman you don't see the political agenda behind it then I think you're not telling the truth.

There's also a political agenda behind disparaging and questioning the character before the movie has even been released.

It's 2020. If there's a kickass black female character, so what? They've had kickass females and black people in Bond movies for decades, why is it suddenly a concern?

Can black women not be spies?

Before yet another thread gets derailed, lets remember this thread is to talk about the new Bond film

Yeah I saw that yesterday. Too old now. You'll get 2 (possibly 3) films out of him.

Ed Westwick or Richard Madden for me.

He's 43. Only slightly older than Brosnan and Dalton when they took on the role. And he's 3 years younger than Moore who did 7 movies.

But I agree with you, they should be going with somebody younger and somebody more unknown. Hardy will only do 1 or 2 as he's too famous and will want to move on and do other things. The same problems go for Idris Elba, too old and too famous.

Someone like James Norton would be my preference. Although even he is 35 which I find slightly too old.

I want something like what happened with Craig in Casino Royale where you saw him become a 00, and then now he's a retired agent. Give the next Bond a full set of films.

Hardy would be good. I think the franchise needs a rethink and reboot.

At this point, as much as i don't like Cruise, the last few Mission Impossible films have done these sort of movies better..

I liked the idea that someone made a while ago (not on here) that they do a hard reboot and go back to the 60's with the story lines. Something different. Doubt anyone involved  would go with it though.

I think they need to go look at Casino Royale (one of the best ever Bonds) and some extent Skyfall and work up why they were good films and stick to this path.

Craig has been dealt some absolute garbage, particularly with Quantum of Solace.
