What makes middle aged men do this?

I was sat on the wall of the park yesterday having  a coffee pre match right in front of the police horses. I Then heard a lot of noise and a group of Leeds fans appeared from the park chanting their Leeds songs etc, about 15 -20  in total with a police escort c/w police dogs. They were mostly middle aged. As expected the locals took umbrage to this and the usual jumping up and down on the spot took place followed by various well worn insults to each other took place, numerous pies etc were hurled at the group. All over in a flash no one hurt except a city fan being bitten by a police dog and bitterly complaining to the old bill. Not sure if he had just cause to complain it looked to me as if he was well involved in the dance. What struck me were the ages of people involved almost all middle aged. What on earth do people of this age get from this lark. At such an age most men have kids, responsibilities and should have learned a thing or two. If they only knew it, they make themselves look complete tools. Beyond me why. Anyway no harm done other than serious harm to a pie or two and my elderly downs friend being scared shitless. Well done old timers hope your proud.

It's tribalism, territory, gang mentality etc etc. One group thinking ' we've taken over this place and can do what we like and we'll tell the whole world about it' and the other group taking exception to this. Whilst I love it in the ground, as it creates an atmosphere, people throwing stuff at one another in a park, just sounds... childish. Just like the Leeds players on the pitch, all very child-like.

Yup, caveman mentality. Wanting to protect your territory I guess. Or to put it another way Willy waving. Middle aged blokes having a day off from work and family responsibilities and trying to prove to their peers that they ‘still got it’.

We park on the Industrial Estate near Avonline where the away coaches park, it's the middle aged guys that are still wearing Stone Island, much more likely to be mullered (saw one guy literally bouncing off the parked cars trying to walk in a straight line) and shouting the obscenities.

I suppose it's because they are the only ones that can remember when Leeds were a "big" club!

Society has broken down to the extent where some halfwits think that this is an acceptable way to behave and there is very little consequence, however if the response was one a bit like how the French police react toward the yellow vest movement the average thug would be pulped.

Football violence has been around for decades, nothing to do with society breaking down.

Our youth looks to icons such as footballers, politicians, musicians, tv and film stars and the list goes on, if it’s alright for them to behave with their lies, deceit, greed, violence, sex perversion etc, what kind of messages are being shown to the youth certainly not moral values, self discipline or self respect. Sad but real and difficult. Age as nothing to do with it.

Very true. Take the bloke arrested during the Villa v Brum derby this weekend. A father of multiple kids, so assumingly a fairly responsible adult. But in a football environment........

Nothing wrong with escaping for a while, I do it myself, and it’s great to feel good when your team does well but some people got to overstep the line.

It always makes me laugh to see fans side by side at the WC or Euros etc and when it comes to domestic matches they would want to bash each others brains out.

The thing is, it's nothing new. Things like this have been happening probably since the dawn of professional football.

It's nothing to do with 'society breaking down' or anything else.

The only reason why it seems like it happens more is because there are multiple social media forums (including this one) where people can take videos/photos/stories etc and tell the whole world about it.

That simply didn't happen 'back in the day' where what happened on match day would be kept to story telling and hearsay around the bar the next week.

Btw i'm not advocating it, that's just my opinion on the situation.

Oh I hadn't realised sorry I've only been following city since 70/71 when I lived in Fishponds and lived among people who frequented the Tote end and gathered at the white swan opposite the black Sean down by the Concorde cinema, sorry Mr pocket book psychologist sorry sir?

Just for a bit of balance on Saturday i seen many Middle aged men taking there families to the game.  Some of them were with their teenage children. Some of them  were looking after their elderly parents. Some of them were just meeting their friends for a enjoyable.day out but they all had one thing in common they were behaving themselves.

He’s not a responsible adult mate , his Twitter feed is astonishing, think he might be a sandwich short of a picknick
