Really interesting video of ref in Oz who is mic’d up, I think it would be so good if ref’s here had this so you could understand decisions made

For VAR to be a success then it needs this.

A lot of respect would be earned for the refs if people could hear what was going on.

Players would possibly respect the refs more knowing that anything they say could be caught on the mic.

He will be a ref in England next season, starting in the Championship.

Agreed. This is a game changer.

We MUST humanise referees for the sake of the whole game and this does exactly that.

My only concern is that British refs are not as good and concise as this guy and it will actually expose them

Thanks for sharing TLC.

Whether the ref is mic’d or not, he has the players respect because he chats to them like decent human beings, explains his decisions, etc.  As a player you know why, you might disagree with it, but he’s given his view point.

Our refs in the main speak to players with contempt.  They just blow their whistle multiple times and don’t communicate.  Last week v Brum, it was obvious the ref wanted to chat to Fam about a foul - Fam knew it, the ref knew it.  But rather than shout “Fam, come over here and let’s have a chat” or even go over to him / meet him halfway, he just stood on the spot blowing his whistle.  Fam ignored him until he’s created a situation.

David Coote is the best ref I've seen in the Champ this year, he’ll be in the Prem next year.

Here’s another very good insight to refereeing and especially the constant communication between ref, assistant refs and whatever the bloke who stand by the goals are called.

The fundamental problem is the way the ref is treated by players.

Its disgusting.

How the FA have the cheek to give us guidelines at grass roots level is laughable. Kids simply watch professionals behave in a deplorable manner and copy it.

Agreed. Players know refs don't change their decisions, so their behaviour is purely to intimidate and influence the ref across the entire game.

What's the point in training, sports science and the like when players are allowed to gain that extra 5%-10% via ref abuse, diving and other forms of cheating.

The message is - if you want to improve your performance, first cheat and abuse the ref, then move on to the more difficult task of training hard and improving your tactics and skills.

It’s always been that players argue or try to debate decisions that go against them. It’s human nature to react if you feel that you’ve been cheated particularly in a high intensity situation. Anyone that’s played a sport involving officials will have experienced it.

Fifa should learn from rugby. Only the captain can talk to the referee. If a players mouths off then it’s 10mins in the sin bin and if two players do it them the team is down to 9 men.....That would stop players confronting the referee and arguing over a decision. No yellow cards for it but the penalty is 10 mins out of the game. Do it twice and it’s a red card......it’s a straightforward remedy.

There’s reacting (which just needs self control) and there’s abuse. Swearing at someone, physically hounding them, is the latter

Rugby players react with frustration but know that if they show it they’ll be sin binned.....nor doubt they think that the referee is a hopeless twaat......In football there’s no punishment for protesting verbally to the referee.

I was confused when you stated that there was no punishment, when there clearly is. I don’t think there is any rule that a Ref has to wait until he has had enough. Both Captains speak to him beforehand don’t they, all he has to do is say he won’t tolerate swearing at all or questioning decisions and the first person to do so will be booked. I think the players will soon learn.

The rugby Refs do speak differently to the players, they often remind me of a teacher/pupil relationship. They explain things and don’t take any nonsense, their word is final, which the players seem to accept if they are told reasons for decisions.

Do you think our refs speak to the players with contempt because they have been ground down by the way the players speak to and treat them. Having said that I wish the refs would have the balls( or be allowed ) to stand up to the players and send them off for all the harassing by the players, it would soon stop if they sent a few off.

Here's the fundamental problem.... a dozen players swear at the ref - he'd be criticised for sending them all off, even though he should do just that.

Football authorities don't want the rules implemented during games. It leaves refs hamstrung.

Absolutely. 6 of one, half a dozen of the other.

I’m not saying Roger Milford was the best ref ever, but at least he seemed to enjoy himself and had a bit of banter with the players.

"That's an easy yellow." but he didn't give it. (unless it was shown off camera) You have a referee seeing a yellow card incident and not enforcing the rules. This is the biggest problem with referees at the moment. They literally do not enforce the laws of the game. This is why we have 10+ minutes of time wasting a game. This is why we have a rugby scrum in the box at every free kick and corner.

So this referee is weak, and doesn't do his job properly. He'll fit right in.

Am I imagining it or didn’t they bring this ‘rule’ in a couple of seasons back? Clearly died a death if they did.

I’ve got a headpiece for the rugby which means I can hear the referees decisions throughout the match.

Pits really interesting to see how much he communicates with the players and the officials upstairs and it allows me to understand why he makes certain calls.

Something like this would be brilliant for football imo

Hey? He’s warning him that if he stands in the way off the free kick then he’ll have to book him. He’s spoken to him and given him the opportunity to move.

the other team weren’t really looking to take a quick free kick by the looks of it so sensible refereeing IMO

Grassroots football needs lots of guidelines. The game is played by children and very frequently now refereed by teens.

A fundamental problem is that a two tired approach has developed in football both in the way rules are interpreted and with technology.
