The only reason they scored more is because they were given an appalling penalty decision. It was a crucial decision that had a critical impact on the outcome of the match.

The team that deserves to win is the one that scores the most goals, not the one that creates the most chances. If they haven’t demonstrated the ability to take their chances while our goalkeeper has succeeded in preventing them scoring, then they don’t “deserve” to win the game.

So by your own logic, they deserved the win as they scored more.

They were just much better 2nd half. That's not an indictment of the side, realistically when you look at the budgets it's no surprise. You can match effort and endeavor and if that's there, you cant be too disheartened at being beaten by a better side, which going forwards, they were by a mile 2nd half.

Surely even as fans, we’re allowed to be honest? Villa deserved to win today.

Not really, Villa were a better team but Max made some unreal saves and they did not deserve that pen. Irregardless of the stats before the goal that changes everything completely, we could have quite easily held on and nicked one on the counter towards the end but in reality a poor decision robbed us of that opportunity.

A team that creates that many clear cut chances consistently will deserve their wins and should expect to win regularly.

A team that concede that many chances cannot be performing well. If City continue to defend as they did today they will deserve to lose frequently.

It is a worry that we haven't looked anywhere near as solid at the back the last couple of months. I mean, we've played some good teams in that time and been more potent ourselves, but it will be tough to make the playoffs if we keep conceding 2 goals every game

From the footage, it's completely possible that Hunt was grabbing the shirt of the Villa player. Maybe the ref could see something lile that?

Let's not forget that Villa were without 2/3 of their best players. We won't get a better chance to cause an upset. I think they deserve credit for grinding out wins despite difficult circumstances.

Agreed, that makes the defeat even more painful.

LIt looked like the gods were on our side for once with their missing players but they hadn’t counted on Scott Duncan .

No, because one of their goals was not won legitimately.

Without the penalty, the game finishes 1-1.

Can’t believe I’ve had to explain that yet again.

I maintain that whether a team deserves to win or not is defined by how many chances they score, not how many they create.

If Barcelona had the best midfield in the world with Messi and Ronaldo on either wing, but then played Bas Savage up front, they would create more chances than anyone but would they deserve to win every game if they don’t have the necessary quality up front to actually score the goals? No, a team is judged in its entirety and a lack of quality to turn chances into goals is critical to a team’s success.

Yes matches are defined by how many chances a team creates. Yes they are defined by how a team defends. Create one shot on goal each week and allow the opposition that many clear opportunities that team will deserve to lose frequently.

Villa created a hatful of chances. That must not continue to the end of the season. Don't dwell on failure, but don't ignore it. The focus should always be on playing well and improving.
